Apparently female rape survivors 'need' mixed sex groups

Honestly. This is what my local rape crisis centre wrote in a letter to the EHRC.

Apparently women who have been raped need to welcome trans women into the rape crisis groups as they provide amazing value and are 'needed'.

Of course they haven't actually asked female survivors. None of it is trauma informed. I've no idea what the motivation is but its dodgy as hell.

@Artichokeleaves

I'd also add that in their very interesting and novel opinion, female rape survivors who cannot join them in the idea that they need male people in the room traumatising them because it's good for them, (regardless of the female needs or reasons for this) should just be deprived of any support at all.

Not qualified to run a bloody lemonade stand, never mind hold an LA contract.

Exactly Artichokeleaves.

It's blatant discrimination towards women and puts us as a disadvantage compared with men / trans women.

Quite. Bigotry and prejudice and a great deal of self righteousness, but devoid of the basic skills required to do the job.

TabbyMcTatBuskersCat · 17/04/2022 09:21

@puffyisgood completely off topic, but are you a Jodi Taylor fan?

DesidaCrick · 17/04/2022 09:22

Wow, depressing. Nothing to add at the moment but just wanted to express my support Sarah.

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 10:25

I think that if you repeatedly state the service you provide is 'women-only' then it's callous and misleading to further down the page say that our definition of women includes transwomen and non-binary people.

I think services which are mixed sex should be very upfront about that.

Bettygirl · 17/04/2022 10:44

Did you not know? Everything is better when there is a man present to tell women tge true meaning of what it is to be a woman. After all, their experiences are so more important than ours.

How did we get to the position that even rape victims are being told to shut up and think about other people feelings for a change.

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 11:18

I googled one of the services that is heavily represented by signatories in the letter, to see if they had been trained by Stonewall.

There's one google review:

'A truly awful experience. Unsupportive, ignorant women who don't seem to have a comprehensive knowledge of trauma responses and penalise the victim as a result of their ignorance. The management does not know their own policies and procedures. Dealing with has been one of the worst experiences of my life.'

Which is horrible to read. I hope the poster managed to find better quality support elsewhere.

DomesticatedZombie · 17/04/2022 11:19

Oh - I starred out the name of the service, and it seems that has deleted it altogether. Should be 'Dealing with xxxx has been'.

TofuDelights · 17/04/2022 11:22

That letter is beyond vile to women like Sarah who need single sex spaces. Gaslighting in the extreme. Let us know when we can help please, Sarah.

DZ how wearily predictable that this service, that promotes Dave Spart politicking over the wellbeing of the service users, should have such a review.

I feel for the woman who was let down at one of the worst times of her life by a group that should have been there to support her every step of the way.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 17/04/2022 11:33

I'm utterly shocked that a centre staffed by signatories to that ridiculous letter could have provided poor support to anyone.

Oh wait, no I'm not.

Giggorata · 17/04/2022 11:39

Just when you think you can't get more angry about all this utter bollocks…

exemptions.', in the letter to the Parliamentary Committee last year, committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/17524/pdf/

I can't fucking believe that a CEO of a rape crisis centre is trying to remove the exemptions in the 2010 Equality Act, publicly, wtf is wrong with these people?

Artichokeleaves · 17/04/2022 12:26

A group of political extremists set out to capture a service to run it the way they would like (and to end it serving female only people or existing in a female only annoying way).

And they successfully stop that service doing its job because the job in their minds is entirely secondary to the politics. They are not there to help raped women, they are not passionate about helping raped women, they are passionate about ending female only provision for females and focusing everything on their personal political agenda around male people with a range of gender identities.

This is why capture is such a significant issue, and why it is now the case that many captured services are going to have to be closed, everyone sacked, and the service begun again from the ground up free of this piracy. Because the bloody service is to help women with a specific need, not to act as a personal vanity vehicle and feelz for political activists. This letter is largely about the annoyance of raped women wanting actual service instead of behaving as useful props to the staff.

littlbrowndog · 17/04/2022 12:41

@BreatheAndFocus

I can’t put into words how much I despise the women who do this. They’re thick as pigshit, vacuous, virtue-signalling imbeciles, and I find them utterly abhorrent. Traitors and idiots.

This is the ultimate insult. Fuck off all of your dick-pandering halfwits 🤬

Yep

Stepping over the shards of women's lives that they have helped to fracture as part of their political CVs and personal advancement plans.

SigourneyHoward · 17/04/2022 13:20

Presumably the signatories from the Tyneside/Northumberland centres are the same centres that participated in Rachel Pain's research (which from memory was a very small scale study) - so a circular economy so to speak

ResisterRex · 17/04/2022 13:23

Survivors Network also called for "an end to the persistent and widespread violence perpetrated against Black bodies" in light of the Child Q case. They can't even bring themselves to say "girls" in this instance, instead opting for total commitment to the ever-pervasive style of a post-grad first happening on Foucault and Butler, and deciding "bodies" is appropriate. How appalling.

I had a very quick look at one of the organisations that had only one signature. They welcome tw but exclude tm? As I wrote upthread I'm very disturbed by the possible motives that some tw might have for wanting to be with female survivors of rape and sexual assault. Some fetishise it and their reasons for joining would, frankly, be abhorrent to most people. I think it's important for tw to have their own groups and resources, or for there to be mixed sex in addition to single sex. Perhaps Stonewall or that cycling bloke could help with the finance?

Oh wait, no I'm not.

To be fair to the centre, it's only a small proportion of their volunteers/staff who've signed the letter.

So they are illegally discriminating on the basis of the protected characteristic of gender reassignment by treating women with this characteristic (TM) differently from those without?
MrsDanversBroom · 17/04/2022 14:34

[quote PurgatoryOfPotholes]I think this sums it all up

Saying that trans-identified males 'add amazing value' and are 'needed' in women's rape crisis services is like a paramedic hoping for a diverse range of victims in a road accident in order to make her job more intersectional. It's ghoulish.

Absolutely. This stuff is such utter bullshit and I’m sick ofit.

DrBrennerFan · 17/04/2022 14:38

Is no place safe now for women this is utterly shocking.
