I think it’s something to do with the Naughty or Nice list. Like Father Christmas.

I had a post deleted and a stern email from MN once. To be fair I lost my shit at the insanity of men being in women's spaces and had a rant. At no point did I threaten anyone and I'd just been reading Twitter in parallel and saw threats to women so lost sight of boundaries.

waterlego · 01/12/2021 23:30

It did not say Woman, Women, Noun, Adult Human Female.

It said Woman, and the second word was written in the ‘how to pronounce’ fashion.

Agree, @ShagMeRiggins. And the upside-down, back-to-front ‘e’ is called a schwa, just in case you were interested! (It’s a neutral vowel sound).

2319inprogress · 01/12/2021 23:38

I'm so here for ShagMeRiggins's rant Star

(& my thanks to waterlego as I knew it was called a schwa but not how to spell it)

womanity · 01/12/2021 23:51

I also am here for the woman/women/schwa rant but also for the new (to me) name, Dr Deplorable.

The disgraced Dr Deplorable.

hallouminatus · 02/12/2021 00:10

Strictly speaking, schwa is the name of the sound rather than the symbol. Phonetic symbols don't actually have official names. Most speech sounds (phonemes) don't have names either - schwa is unusual - phonemes are normally identified by a description of the way they are articulated, for example, the first vowel in woman, represented by the horseshoe symbol (not an official name) is a near-close back rounded vowel.

Agree on the mispronunciation annoyance.
He’s like the kid at school who tearfully promised never to do such and such again and is back to it the very next day.

waterlego · 02/12/2021 06:33

@hallouminatus Thank you, yes you’re right. I learned about speech sounds in a Phonetics and Phonology module at University but that was some time ago! I do remember that each sound had a description rather than a name and that the description pertained to how and where the sound was made. You have explained better than I could!

I’ve seen folk on Twitter referring to the esteemed Vice journalist as “Agent Hunte” - he’s so good at writing stuff to help peak the public that he’s got to be an undercover GC agent Grin

“Agent Hunte and Dr Deplorable” - sounds like a dodgy superhero franchise!

First time I have ever wanted a 'like' button on Mumsnet. 😁

Wonder what their super powers would be?

torquewench · 02/12/2021 07:26

I've nothing substantial to add here, but after observing the photos in the second Vice article I'm wondering why he's wearing scrubs and a lanyard at home whilst suspended?

A cloak of implausibility.
Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 02/12/2021 07:54

I still don't get why he did a second Vice interview? Why?

Why is he risking his entire career and everything that he has worked for, to impress a handful of people who even give Vice any credibility and think that it produces actual journalism?

Who is it for, in the real world?

Me too, I got so angry at the menz telling me I ought to find a solution to the toilet debate, I lost my rag. I was very angry and it showed in my post. This was deleted and I got a long email telling me to "go well" I've kept my temper since, I go do something else when I think I might get angered by posts. And of course scroll on by.
KittenKong · 02/12/2021 08:32

I’ve been zapped and not even told! You wander over and see that you’ve been out on the naughty step... usually because someone has been on a reporting spree.

I think I one was for ‘yikes!’. It was in response to an alarming photo (and a genuine reaction)...

KittenKong · 02/12/2021 08:33

I’ve been told to ‘go well’ too - well, red rag to a bull. Passive aggressive ‘fuck off’ (which I pointed out in my best school mistress tone).

I was just thinking how passive aggressive that sounds
RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 02/12/2021 08:52

Actually it doesn’t just sound passive aggressive

Ive had a number of very polite and helpful interactions with MNHQ and ive never had a go well from them, which i would have done if it was just a polite/friendly sign off

Because he needs to be the hero of his own story and Vice is helping him write that story. We all do this to some extent but he does it much much more than most. I am thinking of books like Cordelia Fine’s A Mind Of Its Own about how people’s brains deceive them, or Jonathan Haidt’s A Righteous Mind.
KittenKong · 02/12/2021 09:47

The whole ‘go well’ was on a post where someone had trotted over here with intent to stir the pot and goad people and they were shown the door with the phrase used (as in ‘fuck off and don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out’). Well thats how we all read it.
