@Yamaya

It's not a guide on how to be a woman, it's a guide on how to pass for a woman if you were born biologically male. There's a difference.
It's hugely reductive. It basically says that in order to pass as a woman you could adopt these stereotypical behaviours.

Imagine if someone had written this and said; how to pass as an older person, or muslim, or someone of a different race. People would be up in arms and be saying that they were stereotypes (and rightly so). Why is this any different?

Both these articles appear to be written for people who have never been in the presence of a person of the opposite sex. They're more like articles on how to be an alien from planet XYZ.

flashpaper · 06/11/2021 11:06

Oh, damn. I don't pass Confused

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 06/11/2021 11:07

@Yamaya

What is wrong with that.

You're all being very cruel and unnecessary. Bunch of horrible playground bullies. Grow up.

I am a woman. I don't do many of the things in that article. Mainly because I am not a collection of discrete performances.

If we women want to laugh at the shallowness of such crap we will. It's not as though the author is in front of us, readin ghti thread. And if they are well, speak up, we'd like to discuss it with you!

It is, as others have said, ridiculous and insulting.

Whilst you have your Hat of Empathy on try using it for the women of this thread who find the whole idea of their innate sexuality being nothing other than a set of stage directions!

OK! But the real instructions would have to start with

Find a surgeon to remodel your pelvic girdle! Without that you will always give your sex away, no matter how perfectly performative you are otherwise.

Men cannot 'pass' as women. There are some very essential physical, physiological reasons for that, even judging on appearance alone!

drum123 · 06/11/2021 11:11

Well now, the FTM one is just as reductive. 'Not wearing make up automatically makes you look more masculine.' Really? Doesn't it just make you look, well, not made up?

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 06/11/2021 11:12

@MajesticWhine

Hilarious Grin Dammit I haven't shaved for weeks and almost never manicure my nails. Never wear a skirt or heels. How am I going to pass?
I’m feeling like I missed out on these lessons as a young woman. It’s the winter which means I won’t be shaving anything.
CharlieParley · 06/11/2021 11:16

There's a lot of advice in there to actively mimic one's friends, after using them to study how to woman properly. Only the writers are unaware just how many women don't do any of those things. I don't wear makeup, I don't do my nails, I don't shave, I am only just learning to be in touch with my emotions (and not because it's feminine but because it's not healthy for me to repress them). I look neither classy, trendy, provocative nor angelic. I went from student grunge to mumsy and for over a decade, I considered looking clean and tidy a win. Given that I was raising three kids, that was difficult enough. It's funny how 80% of us become mothers, by far the majority will be struggling at some point to follow any kind of elaborate grooming regime, but that's not a look they're going for. Ever.

That article is a collection of ridiculous, condescending stereotypes.

How would you feel about an article on passing as black which suggested listening to rap, talking in patois and robbing a spar?

BloodinGutters · 06/11/2021 11:17

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Another for the male version - learn how to say something nasty, then explain patronisingly that you were 'only joking'

And then accuse the woman of having no sense of humour.

Although I'd love a guide to making male entitlement work for me.

This is the boy whose been bully my daughter to a t. And school claim it’s nothing to do with misogyny. Muppets.
UnWilly · 06/11/2021 11:18

It's reminded me of a couple of years ago when the nurse who ran a marathon in her normal nursing gear of scrubs (initially, was later granted iirc) wasn't allowed the record for fastest dressed as a nurse, because what she was wearing didn't meet their criteria for a nurses outfit, it not being a dress

The guide is how to pass like a woman - how very transphobic. If Derek, a 20 stone 6 foot trucker from Dagenham says she is a woman then a woman she is - according to Stonewall. Confused

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/11/2021 11:20

Fuck me, I'm a man and I didn't know it.

ButtonSister · 06/11/2021 11:23

The "how to pass as a man* Wiki has a helpful picture of someone manspreading, but doesn't mention mansplaining

PeriConfused · 06/11/2021 11:24

Oh dear. 49 years of being a woman and I clearly have not yet nailed it, I need to up my game. Must remember to dress in an angelic fashion and pay more attention to me grooming. I didn't finish the article as I feel so over burdened with things to do to be a woman 😮

NecessaryScene · 06/11/2021 11:25

Indeed. Why should anyone be assuming it's better to pass as a "cis" woman? What if you want to pass as a trans woman? You should be going into GameStop, bellowing "It's Ma'am!!!" and kicking over displays. Right?

Fieldofgreycorn · 06/11/2021 11:25

The majority of the population display/ adopt many of these gender traits and behaviours - males and females. All you’re doing is mocking transgender people.

I think you and I must know very different people
PlanktonsComputerWife · 06/11/2021 11:26

"Doesn't just involve wearing makeup and stockings." :D

I've never read anything so facile.

Of course many people adopt masculine and feminine traits. What has that got to do with being a man or a woman? Nothing.
Whatthechicken · 06/11/2021 11:28

It reminded me of a 1940s book I have called ‘Every Women’s Doctor Book’. It’s all just so regressive. The book makes for hilarious, if not disturbing reading. These stereotypes are taking right back there. Hope the pics have posted in order.

@Fieldofgreycorn

They really don’t see women as actual people but just a collection of performances

No more so than females trying to pass as men.

www.wikihow.com/Pass-As-a-Male-(For-FTMs)

Gender often has been referred to as a performance that’s not new.

Do you agree that gender is a performance? I thought it was the innate essence of one's true self?
PlanktonsComputerWife · 06/11/2021 11:31

It's never "How to pass as a woman: lead the Iceni and other Britons in a revolt against the Romans, write Middlemarch, discover radium."
