Oh thanks for the link @WarriorN - I do know of her work, and her situation. She spoke at Filia last month.

FlyingOink · 05/11/2021 18:25

@KaycePollard

Did anybody else hear Justin Webb interviewing Jo Grady on Radio 4 about the UCU pension dispute?

Jo Grady is an idiot - not a proper grown up for such a responsible job. I hang in there in the UCU, but only just. She was using T*erfblocker for a while, so I couldn't see her tweets - the Gen Sec of my own union!

What's being done to academic pensions is a scandal but the current UCU exec are not capable of advocating or bargaining on our behalf.

Academics have always swapped salaries (I'd be earning at least 50% more than I earn as a professor if I'd taken up the civil service graduate entry/high flyer job I was offered 30 years ago) for tenure (which we no longer have) and a decent pension.

Just out of interest, what would make you leave your union?

I know this is a side issue to the thread, but's what the alternative? Contributions at 20-something% of salary? I sure as hell couldn't afford that, and there are already those around me who aren't part of the main USS pension because they can't afford the contributions at their current 9.8%.

I don't understand how she can say she's been "silenced" when she's on the radio and has been in just about every media outlet daily for weeks since this started.

Such faux innocence... You're not fooling anybody, dear.
NotBadConsidering · 06/11/2021 03:16

Every time a critic of hers is asked what were the words she said that are so offensive they reply “Shush! We can’t say her words!”

Pretty effective silencing if you ask me. And. It’s deliberate, because they know if they say her words out loud there’s nothing offensive about them at all.

There is a lot you claim not to understand despite posters on here repeatedly explaining very obvious points to you. Perhaps Twitter is more suited to your level of understanding.
Sophoclesthefox · 06/11/2021 06:40

Your understanding of the case is so flimsy, margarita, that you earlier demonstrated that you don’t even know what constructive dismissal is. Given that ignorance, why would anyone here take your input seriously?

Please do carry on though, you do incredible work demonstrating the level at which Kathleen’s critics operate Smile works for me, though I’ve no idea why you think you help your case.

prudencepuffin · 06/11/2021 15:56

KS certainly wasnt wrong about all this giving her more platforms to speak - another front page article on the Life and Arts section of the FT today under the heading: "They Dont Want to Argue with me. They Just want to ruin my reputation". Sorry, couldnt find the link. Contained the obligatory comments from a few students saying she is making them unsafe but generally a good article.

NecessaryScene · 06/11/2021 16:35

Did she dangle them out the window as a punishment for bad philosophy?

It's a fair question - but she said in her Woman's Hour interview that she hadn't been silenced - as she was able to do things like that interview - but that it had been eventually too difficult for her to continue in her job. Not just from the student protests, but also low level bullying over several years from staff who disagreed with her and who, rather than openly discussing the issue, misrepresented her views to students. She said the final straw was her own union speaking out against her.
prudencepuffin · 07/11/2021 12:07

@NecessaryScene - I did actually ask two students what exactly they thought KS would do to them to make them unsafe. As you might expect there was no reply!
Dangling them out of the window might have brought a little air into their fevered brains!

Exactly. They've been trained not to question, not to read and not to make up their own minds - in a way I feel sorry for them

Floisme · 07/11/2021 17:00

Kathleen Stock didn't let 3 years of bullying and intimidation silence her because she's brave. You don't hear from the people who are really being silenced because they see what happened to her and keep their heads down. Which was, I imagine, the intention all along.

Floisme · 07/11/2021 17:01

Oh I'm sorry Margarita's post was deleted. It was very revealing.

Woke academic Twitter is VERY CROSS that the woman they hounded out of a job is giving INTERVIEWS and selling BOOKS and being MENTIONED IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS instead of GOING AWAY and BEING QUIET like they told her to.

I'd like to think that freeing KS to speak her mind and further motivating her to do so will be a classic error of the proportions of having the worst continent in Risk .

Floisme · 07/11/2021 17:33

I guess it must be enraging though, when you think you've finally managed to shut a woman up and she still won't comply.

Needmoresleep · 07/11/2021 18:31

I don’t think this has been posted. Mail on Sunday.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10172813/KATHLEEN-STOCK-reveals-really-like-vilified-beliefs.html

It is not often that a philosophy professor writes for what is one of the largest circulation newspapers in the UK. No doubt people will dismiss it as being just the Mail, but they would not be publishing it unless they were sure most readers were behind her. MailOnline also has large readership in the US and Australia. Here’s hoping.

I wonder would the mainstream media and radio give several weeks worth of platforming to a transwoman?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/11/2021 19:06

If an MTF trans person was being bullied for their beliefs in gender identity ideology by students, egged on by unhinged Twitter warriors, you bet they would.

GCAcademic · 07/11/2021 19:24

@MargaritaPie

I wonder would the mainstream media and radio give several weeks worth of platforming to a transwoman?
Seriously? If a transwoman had been hounded out of their job, needed security installed in their home and workplace, been harassed for years by their colleagues, had defamatory lies told about them in order to trash their professional reputation, and had masked bullies terrorising them in their workplace for stating a fact that the overwhelming majority of the population know to be true, you can bet your bottom dollar that the media be in overdrive. It would never happen, though, because the University and police would have taken action against the perpetrators years ago. We all know that the intimidation and harassment would never have been allowed to continue for so long if the target was anyone other than a biological woman. I doubt you'd find people siding with bullies and thugs like you do, and saying the transwoman deserved it either.
