Says he is “team TERF” and backs JK Rowling.

Aw that was great. Very funny and very moving. It was surprisingly validating to hear him saying "If I was a woman, I'd be mad."

beastlyslumber · 07/10/2021 19:38

He was like, you have to look at it from women's point of view. That surprised and impressed me.

And the thing is dh saw this and i said…yeah people are trying to cancel him, lets watch it

Wouldn’t have put it on at all in ‘normal’ circumstances

Planning to watch it tomorrow night. Wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise.

Not gonna lie there have been some moments when ive looked like this 😳

But its well worth a watch and i have laughed and,as others have said, its very moving at the end

lilmishap · 07/10/2021 21:43

I can't find it on Netflix.

lilmishap · 07/10/2021 21:45

D'oh I was on the kids profile

FromEden · 07/10/2021 21:51

I saw him live a few months ago and much of it was the same as this Netflix special except he said even more that would get the transactivists up in arms. Everyones phones were taken and locked away though, so no evidence. When he kept saying "gender", I wanted to shout out, "it's SEX ffs"

FromEden · 07/10/2021 21:53

He didn't talk about his friend Daphne at the show I was at though. Sad story.

lilmishap · 07/10/2021 22:17

Pretty telling that there's no outrage for the minutes he spent joking about beating a woman.

ScreamingMeMe · 07/10/2021 22:22

I haven't watched it yet but I will. I watched a King Critical video on the trans section, and I didn't see anything that would lead to trans people being murdered, but of course that's the claim that's being made by twitter TRAs. I think they may just open some lore eyes.

Nellodee · 07/10/2021 22:42

I think Chapelle is a hugely unpleasant man. He offends me as well, so I have sympathy with this complaint. I wouldn’t want Jim Davidson on Netflix and I think he’s about as funny and as repulsive.

Couchbettato · 07/10/2021 23:04

The fact he said gender is a fact and not sex is a fact makes me believe he doesn't actually know what he's talking about at all.

In his set he said women look at Transwomen like black people look at blackface, and they get upset because it's mockery... I mean. Yeah, kinda see where he was going with that. Transwomen are the epitomy of harmful female sexist stereotypes, but we're not just upset at that.

We're upset because it's a full safeguarding issue! Because sexual predators sit next to little girls in a spa and little girls get called bigots for not wanting to see a semi erect penis in women's spaces. We're mad because for every time someone says It Never Happens, guess what, it happens.

I know he can't really convey all of that on set. But how can you fundamentally call yourself a feminist if you think that the reason we're upset is simply because we're being mocked?

Costumeidea · 07/10/2021 23:05

I love Dave Chapelle and he makes some fantastic points within his jokes. I particularly liked the bits where he spoke about his jealousy of the trans ‘movement’ in relation to being a black man.
And when he compared trans women to white people wearing blackface, I shouted ‘yes!’ at the screen.

BraveBananaBadge · 07/10/2021 23:50

@TanquerayTickles

If they're worried about Dave Chappelle they're going to lose their collective shit when they see Ricky Gervais next Netflix special!

I went to see his Human Nature tour last week and he went IN on the absurdity of it all, pointing out all the obvious and ridiculous pitfalls in a comedy fashion.

It's being filmed for Netflix and is his next special so there will be meltdowns everywhere. You can't cancel Gervais!

Now that will be interesting to see. I know Chapelle is huge in the States but he's not so well known here, so the impact is arguably somewhat limited. Gervais on the other hand... The Guardian will lose its tiny mind.
FromEden · 08/10/2021 00:17

This is it. And he doesn't get it. He characterises the "bathroom bills" as a huge injustice and falls back on the trope of a passing trans woman being forced to use the men's room when that's not what the issue is at all.

timeisnotaline · 08/10/2021 00:22

@Anotheruser02

I'll be interested to see if they do take it down, Vanguard group owns Netflix and also a pharma company.
I’d be pretty surprised if vanguards pharma division get editorial say in netflix productions no matter what. That is not how to run the magic flywheel.
timeisnotaline · 08/10/2021 00:25

I can’t see me watching it but good on him. Finally some new comedy material for everyone that’s not Karen’s and women generally as the only fair game left. (it’s a good thing racist anti Semitic anti gay jokes are not cool, I just wish beating on women wasnt either!)

TedImgoingmad · 08/10/2021 02:10

Hmm, I watched it this evening (and also wouldn't have otherwise). I'd say he does not get what women are primarily worried about (safeguarding) - as pp have mentioned, the bathroom joke shows he didn't get it. He comes at it from the privilege angle - the celebration of LGBTQ+ in ways that black people never have been; the acceptability of woman face when black face is not. And also the tribal element involved - how they will turn on their own the second they "transgress", and how a friendship can form if you put the preconceptions and tribalism aside. I don't know though. I don't find him particularly funny, and it's all about his ego and reputation, which I find just boring.

AnyOldPrion · 08/10/2021 03:41

I have only watched a tiny clip, not the whole, and I get why some of you on this thread are dissatisfied, but I think this is huge. If comedians are starting to laugh at what’s happening (mainly regarding the extremity of where we are currently) then that means things are really moving.

If Ricky Gervais is finally jumping in with both feet (as opposed to his previous tinkering on the edges) then so much the better. And both these men are in the untouchable class, so they will be impossible to cancel.

So I don’t really care that Chapelle doesn’t really fully get every nuance. He’s huge in the US where this stuff has a much stronger hold on the population than in the UK. I’m glad he said it. It indicates that the shift we have sometimes felt is happening, really is, even if there’s still a long way to go because this stuff is so embedded.

NecessaryScene · 08/10/2021 06:19

Not least because it means they believe it's a subject their audience will understand. It means it is mainstream.

AnyOldPrion · 08/10/2021 06:29

Good point. Hadn’t considered exactly that aspect, but it really does indicate this is a huge public debate that is now happening, which is something we have wanted for a long time.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/10/2021 06:59

I watched it. I dont think he gets it really but its hardly cancel material. He didn't make his stance particularly clear tbh I think he mamged to do it without "picking a side" so to speak.

If they pull it , they've just proved his point for him. That no one actually reads or listens to what's being said.

Comedians take the piss out of people it's what they do. If u r easily offended don't watch them..take that personal responsibility of not watching people likely to wind u up .

I dont watch frankie boyle for that reason. I take responsibility for my viewing.
