Says he is “team TERF” and backs JK Rowling.

@TanquerayTickles

If they're worried about Dave Chappelle they're going to lose their collective shit when they see Ricky Gervais next Netflix special!

I went to see his Human Nature tour last week and he went IN on the absurdity of it all, pointing out all the obvious and ridiculous pitfalls in a comedy fashion.

It's being filmed for Netflix and is his next special so there will be meltdowns everywhere. You can't cancel Gervais!

@TanquerayTickles Wow. I'll definitely be watching that!
SirSamuelVimes · 08/10/2021 22:36

Dave Chappelle gets applauded in LA amid JK Rowling transgender spat www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10073433/Dave-Chappelle-gets-standing-ovation-LA-backing-JK-Rowling-transgender-spat.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead[/quote]
Fucking typical though, isn't it? JKR says it and she get thrown under the bus. A man says he agrees with her, he gets applause.

lilmishap · 08/10/2021 22:45

That Andrew Sullivan article is jaw dropping. I'm wondering if it will be allowed to stay up

timeisnotaline · 08/10/2021 22:49

@SirSamuelVimes partly true but JKr said it back when it was burn at the stake material. Just the fact he’s saying it shows it’s not anymore. I’ll be very interested in the changing reception JKR gets, she’s a very brave woman.

Lea1437 · 08/10/2021 22:53

Nevermind the head tilt, what about the tattoo Hmm

SirSamuelVimes · 08/10/2021 22:53

I know time and I do see the change as positive - it's just galling to see a man getting clapped and a woman getting death threats.

I agree with you, JKR is so brave. Be interesting to see what happens next.

LobsterNapkin · 08/10/2021 23:14

The Sullivan article is on his own website, so I think it should be around for a while.

It's been interesting to watch his engagement with this, he keeps seeing more and more and I can almost picture his growing horror.

FromEden · 09/10/2021 01:34

I'm surprised at all the love DC is getting in here too, you don't have to dig deep to find something a bit iffy.

That was a different special from a few years ago. They tried to cancel him then too. I dont agree with his views about Michael Jackson and I didn't like the child abuse joke in this show either. I can still find other things he says funny though.

NotBadConsidering · 09/10/2021 01:52

But it’s not his view of Michael Jackson. It’s his view that a joke like that about Michael Jackson would be provocative, offensive, and funny and worth putting in that show.

LobsterNapkin · 09/10/2021 02:18

Yeah, you really can't assume that what is in a comedy show reflects the views of the comedian in a direct way, and certainly not in a nuanced way.

NutellaEllaElla · 09/10/2021 07:10

And people are imperfect. This purity spiral stuff is divisive and unhelpful. It's GOOD to find common ground. You're much more likely to change someone's mind that way.

Yes he used to be pretty pro TRA didn't he?
NecessaryScene · 09/10/2021 09:21

Yes he used to be pretty pro TRA didn't he?

Don't think so - he's always been rather skeptical as long as I can remember commenting. But he's been increasingly outspoken.

He's a moderate conservative - was taking the lead on gay marriage back in the 90s, but don't think he's ever been in favour of the radical "LGBTQ" stuff.

Indeed, being in favour of gay marriage in the 90s was going against the radicals - the equivalent of the TRAs back - who regarded marriage as a heteronormative institution that they wanted to "queer".

Sparring partner Glenn Greenwald, coming from the left, another gay man, has been somewhat more pro-TRA, but is increasingly skeptical. Hasn't yet come up with anything quite like that though - he's not as deep into the technical bits of the subject, more just worried about the shape of the movement, particularly how authoritarian it is. He did just call out someone demanding Jesse Singal and Graham Linehan be banned from Substack recently.

ElaineMarieBenes · 09/10/2021 10:15

I highly recommend watching all of Dave’s Netflix specials (in order!) - this one is ‘the closer’. He is not just funny but thought provoking and very clever!

I was almost, almost, starting to feel sorry for Moore. The sudden about turn that Twitter is taking must be a shock to the system. To go from being celebrated as so funny and stunning and brave and special. So much so that you feel 100% confident in basically trying to very publicly manipulate Netflix into giving you a role in commissioning new content. Which is clear as day to me after reading this quote, But what I really want is I want companies to hire trans people to work there who can say, “Hey, we sure about this?” The fact of the matter is there are very rarely trans people in those rooms and yet we are so often the subject of the derision. We’re very rarely in any decision-making positions. And I think that’s my bigger concern.

And to suddenly in the space of 2 days have to face the fact that the vast, vast majority of people think you are a disgrace. For taking the showrunner job on DWP. For criticising Chappelle. For being a ridiculous, attention seeking imitation of a woman. For your stupid fucking head tilt.

I really am so socialised to empathy that I felt bad for Moore even though, to be totally honest, Moore makes my skin crawl. And then I saw that tattoo. And fucking fuck. It's so utterly fucking disgustingly contemptuous of women. I'm honestly so very repulsed. I do feel potentially really bad for the tattoo artist. I really, really hope it wasn't a woman who felt socially compelled, yet deeply uncomfortable spending hours on what is clearly a fetish act.

The Guardian has a typically humourless take on it:

www.theguardian.com/stage/2021/oct/09/dave-chappelle-letter-trans-comedian-netflix

Plenty to enjoy in there, including:

"What could be a greater mockery than you throwing Black women under the bus to cape for JK Rowling, an insidious white woman?"

Insidious, eh? That'll larn her.

And:

"We listen when you compare our genders to blackface, as if both were defined by slapping on some paint, to make a mockery of those we oppress."

Er...

VladmirsPoutine · 09/10/2021 15:33

Dave Chapelle is an interesting ally in all this and I doubt his support stems from his new found support for women's rights. He commented that rapper Da Baby's career suffered practically zero consequences for killing a man a few years ago but now has for making homophobic comments at concert not too long ago. And I'm not entirely sure he really gets it as he misquoted JKR and used the word 'gender' as opposed to 'sex'.

The Author is Transgender, hence the "What could be a greater mockery than you throwing Black women under the bus to cape for JK Rowling, an insidious white woman?" which doesn't reflect what I know most Black Women think nor the large number of "IloveJKR" type usernames on Lipstickalley.

Americans do this though, IME. There are lots of what would be considered transphobic memes that say things like: "if I had a dollar for every gender that exists, I'd have two dollars."

He's not an ally. He's a comedian who has built a reputation for saying things many people wish they could say or joke about, and for also making insightful comments while taking the piss out of all groups (including feminists).

Brendan O'Neill's take on it.

In his own way Brendan O'Neill has achieved uncancellable status too.

Americans seem to be a bit prudish about the word sex.

He's not an ally

This "ally" "not an ally" is so silly. Back in the day when I was ridiculously left wing I was still very grateful when Ann Widdecombe and the late Alan Clark both opposed transport of veal calves.
