Says he is “team TERF” and backs JK Rowling.

Hmm, I'm curious to know the context for "gender is a fact". I'd say arguing that gender is the factual bit, rather than sex, falls into either conservative or TRA territory.

PandorasMailbox · 07/10/2021 17:03

If they're forced to take it down by the usual suspects, it'll just prove his point.

NutellaEllaElla · 07/10/2021 17:05

I saw this on fb and there was no support in the comments. I saw his set a while ago and was surprised it hadn't been cancelled by alphabet people.

BraveBananaBadge · 07/10/2021 17:06

I haven't watched it that but yet but Glinner was flagging this up yesterday. Should have known the immediate reaction would be a call for censorship and the end of Dave Chapelle's career, just surprised it's taken 24 hours. It's a given he won't give a flying fuck, so this should be amusing watching them scream into the void.

I'm interested to hear his story about Daphne as it sounds as if that could be very thought provoking stuff.

EishetChayil · 07/10/2021 17:09

I really wish he'd said sex instead of gender! Gender is made up; it's sex that's real.

MarshmallowSwede · 07/10/2021 17:15

If they take it down it will prove his point! And he’s rich and laughing all way to the bank. I’m sure the check has been cashed.. so they are only showing more people they are extremists.

Dave Chapelle has a huge fan base, so I agent wait for the fallout on Twitter if they do take it down. My popcorn is ready.

This was my reaction!

However I do like "I'm Team Terf". Because actually, so are most people, when you spell it out.

Go team!!

trancepants · 07/10/2021 17:25

The show runner of Dear White People, who I was genuinely shocked to learn is a very white transwoman, is threatening to never work with Netflix again.

MarshmallowSwede · 07/10/2021 17:33

@trancepants

A white man refusing to work in the movies. Wow.. what are we to do? Hollywood is full of them.. I’m sure we will be fine. 😂😂😂

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 07/10/2021 17:37

Ah. That explains why The Guardian gave it a one-star review.

This is the American Debate. Both sides use sex and gender to mean the same thing, see Majorie Taylor Bonkers Green's banner, "There are only two genders...."

SCOTUS has ruled that references to 'sex' in the Constitution mean gender.

Anotheruser02 · 07/10/2021 17:44

I'm on the fence about that, I don't think we can insist TERF is a slur when people refer to themselves as TERF, it is used to incite hatred and in some cases violence on feminists and is successfully dehumanising them.

If people stop using it about themselves, then GC's who feel discriminated against at work etc and are hearing it in the hateful sense can legitimately say that the word creates a hostile environment for people with GC beliefs. Not if it becomes a mainstream acceptable descriptive word.

SpindleWhirl · 07/10/2021 17:51

Like Chappelle gives a fuck about a bunch of whining privileged blue haired babies.

They're finishing his set for him. Then he gets the encore.

Anotheruser02 · 07/10/2021 18:09

I'll be interested to see if they do take it down, Vanguard group owns Netflix and also a pharma company.

BraveBananaBadge · 07/10/2021 18:23

Oh they did? Says it all.

Netflix must have anticipated this so it will be interesting to see how it reacts (can't imagine for a moment they'll take it down but they're bound to have to pay lip service to the bluehairs somehow).

Imagine Chapelle's contract gave him free creative rein, and he gets paid anyway. That said, many pairs of eyes would have seen it before it dropped and considered it okay.

lilmishap · 07/10/2021 18:24

I thought Netflix already took down a show and then reinstated it?

BraveBananaBadge · 07/10/2021 18:35

Ah, two stars from comedy critic Brian Logan, who has accused someone of transphobia before (Robert Webb, maybe?) iirc, so has form.

Interesting intro in the Graun's piece about the furore (not by Logan):

"Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special is facing a wave of intense backlash after the comedian once again made jokes directed toward the LGBTQ+ community and defended the author JK Rowling, who has been previously accused of transphobia."

So they consider the top line, and the thing at the heart of the backlash, his support for JKR? Oh do fuck off.

SpindleWhirl · 07/10/2021 18:54

That crap now passes for Guardian journalism, doesn't it? Characterising a famous talented person as, "XYZ, who has previously been accused of transphobia ...", without any context, right of reply, counter-balance or sense of journalistic impartiality.

I mean, anyone could have been accused of the nebulous "transphobia" on twitter. Just get your mate in Lonely Hearts to tweet it at them.

It's hardly Pulitzer prize-winning stuff. It's shit journalism.

Diaryofamadwoman · 07/10/2021 18:54

My lecturer discussed this today to highlight the complexities of power structures. Uni might not be quite so bad this year

beastlyslumber · 07/10/2021 19:01

I'm watching it just now. It's very offensive and very funny indeed.

MellieBellie · 07/10/2021 19:04

I think this was very calculated on Chappelle's part. I've been following his career for a while now & he's touched on it in the past. He knew he was about to set off a huge shitstorm and I think the timing was deliberate. This was the last of a 3 special deal that was worth $60m. He'll never need to work again. He's comedy's version of JK Rowling. He's too rich and successful to cancel.

littlbrowndog · 07/10/2021 19:05

Me too 🤣🤣🤣

TanquerayTickles · 07/10/2021 19:14

If they're worried about Dave Chappelle they're going to lose their collective shit when they see Ricky Gervais next Netflix special!

I went to see his Human Nature tour last week and he went IN on the absurdity of it all, pointing out all the obvious and ridiculous pitfalls in a comedy fashion.

It's being filmed for Netflix and is his next special so there will be meltdowns everywhere. You can't cancel Gervais!

CrumpetShaw · 07/10/2021 19:15

I watched it yesterday. He is definitely not reverent to gender ideology, but taking the section overall (which is about 20 mins at the end) it's empathic really. Which was the point he was making. It's worth watching. I felt quite moved at one point. Yes he uses the word gender meaning biological sex I'm sure: which is a bit muddling.

BelleHathor · 07/10/2021 19:32

As Chappelle said a few years ago:
‘I support anyone’s right to be who they want to be. My question is: to what extent do I have to participate in your self-image?’ Simple really 🤔
