labourlist.org/2021/09/anti-trans-members-are-dinosaurs-who-want-to-hoard-rights-says-lammy/?amp&__twitter_impression=true

Its hard to describe how angry this article made me. I am sick to the back teeth of the lies and slurs being told about women who want to protect absolutely basic rights and safeguarding.

Dinosaurs who want to 'hoard' rights. That's the contempt that the Labour party has for women in prisons who are assaulted and intimidated by the males they are now being housed with. Dinosaurs who want to hoard rights are traumatised women who are too scared to access refuges that males might be in. Dinosaurs who want to hoard rights are women athletes who reject being told to 'be kind' and hand over what they have worked their hold life for, to males who have an inbuilt biological advantage.

Women really aren't entitled to anything but insults when they try to speak up for themselves in the Labour party. Ironic really that we are called Dinosaurs when the Labour party is clearly reverting to its unionist roots when unions wanted to keep women in their place to protect male members advantage.

But most disgusting is the utterly unself-aware and hypocritical way Lammy advocates for positive discrimination for black men, a group of people he can understand face disadvantage (being one), so he wants to increase HIS social groups rights rights whilst gleefully not only removing women's basic rights but throwing insults at us for objecting to this.

That's it. Not only will I not vote for Labour again but I am going to become an active campaigner against them. They are beyond disgusting in their utter misogyny.

Also, it's dragons who hoard, not dinosaurs.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 28/09/2021 10:25

But black rights are for men too, and one of them is David Lammy. So they matter. They don’t include black women’s rights to privacy, single-sex meetings, protection from male violence etc etc because DL isn’t a woman so those things don’t matter.

Grin See, he's such a dumbass! Don't even his dragons from his dinosaurs! Grin

This has made me so sad.
Why does no one give a shit about women.

They really don't do they? They really don't.

I was chatting to Mr Menno after the rally at the Senedd and he asked if we had been personally affected by all this. And I said I had never realised until this how as a culture we really don't give a shit about women, we really don't. And he said ' It hurts doesn't it?' Yes, yes it does. It really hurts.

A man who doesn't know his dragons from his dinosaurs is a man who hasn't read many stories to children.

Or he calculated that calling women 'dragons' might make his position be more easily seen as the misogynistic insult it is. So he settled on 'dinosaur' as a nicely offensive compromise in his clever head.

Very, very disappointed in Lammy.

In that interview he didn't really display the intellectual rigour to have been that calculating Grin

That article is badly written. I love David Lammy so I am really hoping they've mixed up a wide ranging conversation and the "dinosaurs hoarding rights" didn't refer to women.
But then again I was thinking I might vote Labour until the ridiculous "untrue women have cervixes" stuff. And Emily Thornberry yesterday Sad

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/09/2021 11:02

Asked at a fringe meeting today about the ongoing conflict in the party over the rights of transgender people, he said there is “always a debate when you’re extending rights to people who have been denied them for so long”.
Lammy told the event that the “great story of the 20th century is “people who had no rights claiming those rights” – including the working class on the factory floor, and those fighting for LGBT rights and BME rights.

I read it as he was speaking about the rights of all minorities (despite the question) ... and the headline doesn't reflect that.

PaleGreenGhost · 28/09/2021 11:04

Where did I read, perhaps twitter, that since becoming MP, David Lammy has had 3 kids?

You wouldn't necessarily have guessed that even if you paid close attention to his work.

I wonder why that is? What could possibly be different about David and the mother of his children?

deadleaves · 28/09/2021 11:07

Lammy told the event that the “great story of the 20th century is “people who had no rights claiming those rights” – including the working class on the factory floor, and those fighting for LGBT rights and BME rights

He didn't mention women's rights then?

Wonder why the hard won rights of half the population were not noteworthy enough to 'Dave' to mention? Us women just aren't on his radar are they?

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2021 11:12

I'm not convinced that 'extending rights' is a useful term. Different groups often need specific rights on top of the general rights we all have, its pointless giving them the rights of another group.

Its not acceptable to give away the rights of a group after they've had to fight for them in such a way that they lose them; and it can't possibly be a Good Thing when one of those rights is safeguarding.

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2021 11:13

And I suspect we are on his radar, just not in a good way. He's probably been briefed and thinks he knows all about us.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 28/09/2021 11:16

I think his wording is helpfully revealing, because what does it mean, to 'hoard' rights? I'm sure the implication he was going for was 'not sharing', 'trying to keep them all for ourselves', but it also means not relinquishing them, doesn't it? Well, quite right, women won't relinquish their hard-won rights; why the hell is anyone asking them to??

I think Lammy is often bang on the money, I think his analysis of class and race and power and the barely-hidden racism of this country is solid and well-observed, and he's (from personal experience) a constructive constituency MP. OTOH his conservative 'family values' (broken homes narrative) is also anti-feminist IMO so his anti-feminist take on women's spaces doesn't surprise me.

Onyernelly · 28/09/2021 12:43

Just another man telling women what’s wrong with them.

Hoarding rights…what rights? The right to be murdered at a terrifying rate? The right to feel unsafe every. Single.day.

I couldn’t even attend body pump yesterday without a man verbally abusing me as all the other women looked fearfully at the floor.

Im actually frightened to leave the house at this point in my life. The abuse directed at women doesn’t stop as you get older it just manifests itself in a different way.

SpindleWorld · 28/09/2021 13:19

And there's me thinking the 20th century had been a story about Votes for Women, women's war work, legal abortion, contraception, Dagenham, the Equal Pay Act, the Sex Discrimination Act, Greenham Common, Reclaim the Nght, more women MPs and councillors, brilliant feminist books, the fight for safeguarding, the establishment of refuges, the continuation of the fight for penal reform ...

Rights that women did share with other women, with their families, with children and young people, with society.

But Lammy thinks I misunderstood all that? Wow.

Helleofabore · 28/09/2021 13:22

Ooh. Can we get dragon names now too?

That’s a disgrace, Onyernelly. If you haven’t reported it to the gym, please do. It’s jnderstandable that you were too shaken to complain at the time.

I hope you’re feeling ok now. Don’t let him put you off keeping fit. I imagine some of those other women may just quietly stop attending.

Slythermum · 28/09/2021 13:47

@Thelnebriati

And I suspect we are on his radar, just not in a good way. He's probably been briefed and thinks he knows all about us.
And he will be assuming that we are all white and right wing. He won't acknowledge or accept that many of us are brown skinned and lefties, who previously voted for him and his Labour brethren.

Some other women have stopped attending. I’m very robust but I’m just tired of being a problem - being the one who says something -

When you expose a problem. you pose a problem.

I think it’ll probably be easier for me in the long term to stop attending.
I’ve fretted over it all weekend and I’m fearful of going back as it’s humiliating being sworn at publicly while everyone else remains silent.

My dh says because I commented on safety concerns regarding the fact that the msn in question was not wearing shoes in a body pump class that I have made myself a target by speaking up - although this was approx 2 months ago.
Apparently if I choose the behaviour then I have to accept the consequences.

AlbertBridge · 28/09/2021 15:43

Aww, I loved David Lammy after his amazing Brexit speech. I've gone right off him now.

Yesterday on Radio 4 they were interviewing a pregnant man who was angry because people on Twitter said he couldn't have a cervix.

The world's batshit.

colouringindoors · 28/09/2021 15:47

This AND Starmer AND the Lancet this week have made me soooo angry and soooo sad. Hard not to feel sometimes that most men hate women, or not hate, just don't care about their webeing one tiny miniscule bit. Fkn misigynist bastards.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2021 15:53

I'm sorry, I guess I was supposed to be hoarding our rights but I fear the only one I've managed to hang onto is the right to remain silent.

Gothichouse40 · 28/09/2021 15:56

David Lammy, sorry, don't rate that man's opinion at all.

Ghostsintheshelf · 28/09/2021 16:00

Im happy to share the rights to single-sex spaces.
