Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

The 'it was a joke' defence didn't work in a Scottish court for Mark meechan (I think that was his name) in the nazi pug YouTube sketch case. The judge specifically said that context was not relevant and he was convicted.

It's interesting how some people are cast out or piled on (like is happening to godley) but others get away with it. Franckie Boyle has done a complete about turn and avoids criticism of his previous comedy by so fully & forcefully signing up to the world view of those he doesn want to be cancelled by.

I don't like a pile on either so I agree with you OP.

ArabellaScott · 10/09/2021 13:22

Comedy deliberately exaggerates, mocks, makes outrageous, hypothetical situations, so yes comedians should be free to say outrageous, terrible things. I am always going to err on the side of free speech, unless it's a threat or directly targeting a person. (I am not defending Godley's tweets, some of them are appalling). I still think she should be free to say them without legal threat.

Also, women should be free to state biological truth without being deleted. Or discuss their gender critical beliefs (worth of respect, remember) without being subject to threat.

That's some brass neck on Godley and Sturgeon.

It isn't a pile on. I have no sympathy for this despicable women. I was very much enjoying seeing her rightly called to task.

She and Sturgeon and the other SNP apologists are beneath contempt.

Murdo Fraser's calm, reasoned speech in the Holyrood chamber elicits a heckle from Sturgeon to shut him up.

Godley's foul mouthed, racist disablist tweets are "just things that happen" according to Sturgeon.

Welcome to the wonderful "inclusive" Scotland. I'm not even particularly gender critical but the hypocrisy, cronyism, stifling of opinion going on in Scottish politics is frightening.

This is exactly what struck me. Protesters trying to engage in legitimate debate about legitimate concerns - ‘shame on you’ says Nicola.

“comedian” (and Nicola’s mate) repeatedly writes racist messages - ‘ach well…’ 🤷‍♀️

Ah yes, I just remembered that Graham Linehan was very vocal about cancelling the nazi pug guy.

And then look what happened to Linehan. I’m not sure if Linehan got the chance to explain why his nazi jokes in Father Ted were ok and non-offensive. Oh well.

ArabellaScott · 10/09/2021 14:19

Yes, this is the root of the problem.

Not really seeing these two examples as simiar.

The first was about recreating Nazi imagery and obeisance to Hitler as a good thing.

The second was about making Nazism the target of humour, and more subtly, also making someone's crap attempts to avoid appearing racist also the target of humour.

Or is it that mentioning Nazism at all is not acceptable?

Abhannmor · 10/09/2021 14:46

I too am struggling to see any equivalence or even similarity between Linehans - fairly gentle, if surreal- mockery of racists and someone celebrating them.

nauticant · 10/09/2021 14:54

By that reasoning, Dad's (sic) Army would be a nightmare of Nazi references and would need to be cancelled forthwith.

RedDogsBeg · 10/09/2021 15:01

@KettlePolly

It's a pile on and not a fair one. I don't agree with everything she says. But this is turning into a witch-hunt and unfair given the vitriol she gets and has got even for saying something comparatively banal. I'd have most likely snapped and said worse far more frequently under pressure. Like I say our politics don't align but it doesn't merit this sort of attack.
Of all the apologies for horrendous racism and disabalism this post has plumbed a new low - banal and most likely snapped.

Gold star award for defending the indefensible goes to you @KettlePolly

I agree. The issue is where she is chosen to effectively be a government mouthpiece in a covid public health campaig.

EsmaCannonball · 10/09/2021 15:13

If you point your fingers at my dog as if they are a gun and then say, 'Up viz ze hands!' like you are in an old war film, then he sticks his paws in the air. (I didn't teach him this. He can also do a trick where he says his prayers, if that it any better.) Shall I turn myself in now or do I just report straight to the gulag?

FuckPilledLatteplus · 10/09/2021 15:22

Both piss takes of Nazis. Both unfunny tbh. Don’t be tiresome, pretending anyone is saying cancel dads army because there’s Nazis in it. Nobody is saying that.

QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 15:25

But pug dog guy wasn't taking the piss. he was celebrating and promoting nazism.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/09/2021 15:30

I like Janey Godley as a comedian. I can only hope that this episode opens her eyes to how quickly the mob will turn on someone and she reconsiders her position when it comes to labeling women, who speak up for their rights, as terfs and is more open to listening to other people.

twitter.com/HumanGayMale/status/1436064804406452228?s=20

Lovely sentiment but what's the incentive for Godley to do that given that she's been exonerated and forgiven by decree by 2 very senior SNP politicians? It seems plausible that she'd be sent for re-education and then ostracised from communities if she acquired then refused to desist from forbidden viewpoints (such as those held by women Godley styles as Terfs).

Sturgeon didn't say that Godley's tweets were "just things that happen" though. That quote was a response to a question about why the tweets weren't picked up when Godley was hired for her role in the ads. Sturgeon said the tweets themselves were "completely unacceptable, completely beyond the pale and I would not in any way, shape or form seek to defend them".

This whole thing is a huge mess anyway but it would be marginally more helpful if people could talk about stuff that actually happened.

ParkheadParadise · 10/09/2021 15:51

I fucking hate now people have made money from covid.
I'd never heard of Janey Godley before covid and then she was everywhere.
Why didn't NS do her own stupid adverts about the spread of covid without giving Janey Godley £12k in fact if janey was paranoid about covid as she claimed she should have done the ads for Fucking free.

The likelihood of JG doing that is somewhere between zero and nil.

That’s your opinion. IMO starting a joke by saying a nazi is the worst thing someone can be isn’t promoting nazism.

ItllBeOverByChristmas · 10/09/2021 17:04

You do realise that nazi pug guy spent most of the video trying to get the pug to react to him saying "Gas the Jews!" Not exactly comparable to most people's feeble "ve have vays of making you talk!" jokes.
