Masterclass from Justin Webb there, I was surprised how informed he was, and so succinct. The likes of BC often get away with going unchallenged as things fly over people's heads; not today. That was a bloody work of art Grin

NecessaryScene · 08/06/2021 18:53

The woman he belittled was Posie Parker. Little did James "Right Side of History My Arse" O'Brien know that she would become an internationally known spokeswoman for the defence of women's spaces

Anyone got a link to a recording of this?

NancyDrawed · 08/06/2021 18:56

Jonathan Haidt and the Heterodox Academy have some good lectures and put forward excellent explanations as to why we need diversity of perspectives.

@WarriorN

I agree with Nauticant, he was an excellent choice for rising above the whole thing and reframing this morning as an issue of debate - as specifically he pointed out how BC couldn't debate.

My initial reaction to ffs another two men was in real time Grin

Jonathan Haidt was so interesting. I liked the way he insisted on locating the debate (which he'd listened to in advance) in the context of our current social media. He really made me think about online discourse - including on here, It was priceless when he referred to the actual debate and started by pointing out that BC modelled what he'd been talking about - how certain people just cry bigot and try to shut everything down rather than debate.
MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/06/2021 19:01

We're getting quite a list of men who unwittingly contribute to the GC cause with their "media techniques" - or lack of them.

The infamous doctor with the Posie interview, the gasping Butterworth and now B Cohen. They really are the gifts that keep on giving to the GC cause. Grin

Had to stop listening to James O'brien, because my blood pressure was off the graph, and I am a Remainer. He is so rude and "know it all" and sometimes he becomes really aggressive.
I think people who call in to him are very carefully chosen by whoever is in charge.

nauticant · 08/06/2021 19:07

"the gasping Butterworth"

This has a poetic quality. Or maybe a taxonomological one.

NecessaryScene · 08/06/2021 19:08

Thanks for links. I'd vaguely remembered the call, but forgotten it was Kellie.

Maybe we should be thanking O'Brien for activating her transformation into Posie. Perhaps she was a superheroine who needed exposure a critical dose of misogyny to discover her superpowers. Grin

Jonathan Haidt is fab. I highly recommend his books The Coddling of the American Mind, and The Righteous Mind. Both have massively helped me understand wtf is going on and why.

There are loads of lectures and interviews on youtube, too

Is it Arty Morty who refers to the sound Butterworth makes as "the buttergasp"?

JOB is a twat.

TedImgoingmad · 08/06/2021 19:25

@bitheby

JOB is a twat.
If Posie ever writes her autobiography, the opening line should be, "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that James O'Brien is a massive twat."
theskyispink · 08/06/2021 19:30

That JOB interview is absolutely rage-inducing.

Kellie has an excellent follow-up video here -

Has JOB changed his mind since then or has he doubled down on being an absolute sprocket, does anyone know?

The Coddling is a great book. It's also "acceptable" enough that you won't be automatically branded a fascist/right wing nutter/transphobe etc etc for reading and recommending it. DH has just lent it to one of his teaching colleagues who is on their "justice, diversity and inclusion" committee. Stirring things up Grin

Joe Rogan's interview with Haidt is also worth seeking out. It was a couple of years ago.

WarOnWoman · 08/06/2021 19:49

Just listened to both Today and PM.

BC must have peaked a lot of people. Go him.

I have a lot of time for Jonathon Haidt's views. He explained the lack of debate very well.

Ditto. And he can't win an argument - if he starts losing, he just cuts the speaker off.

I'm a Remainer too, but he made me cringe at how patronising he is to Leavers - that soft, faux-concerned voice he uses when he's explaining to them how stupid they are. He's probably recruited more people to Brexit than Farage.

Mollyollydolly · 08/06/2021 19:59

It's worth looking through his tweets and replies today. The gift that keeps on giving. So sad I'm on a 7 day ban .. Ben seems to think all BBC journalists should say their pronouns at the beginning of a programme.

Sorry, but

Mollyollydolly · 08/06/2021 20:00

Agree about JOB .. cant listen to him and I was an ardent remainer. He probably caused Brexit, the patronising, wee poshboy.
