JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

@BlueLobelia I'm glad they're helping your son, I remember they were a great comfort for my DD when she was having trouble at school- she loved Hermione and felt validated by the character's experience of being bookish and a bit outcast. I really hope things improve for him soon!

JKR astounds me. The good she does despite the abuse that would have me curling up in a corner The utter strength of this woman. When I grow up I want to be just like her.

Yes.
Helleofabore · 21/05/2021 08:12

And of course back in the limelight with Stephen King’s tweets.

LunaNorth · 21/05/2021 08:30

Oh fucking hell, not him too?

nolongersurprised · 21/05/2021 08:49

I think he’s getting quite an education.

He “liked” JK’s first tweet, then unliked it in the face of criticism and came out last year with a TWAW statement. He is now clearly perturbed at the vitriol directed against her and has said so, whilst still maintaining TWAW. Of course, that’s not enough for the blue-haired crowd. You can’t just disagree with JKR, you need to despise her as well.

(Based on the original timeline I don’t actually think Stephen King is on the full trans train, more that he lacks the courage to publicly support JKR).

Just popping in to say "more power to J K Rowling and her willingness to shine a light". She is truly wonderful.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/05/2021 13:26

I'm still astounded, most of all, by M Atwood kowtowing to the TRA cult. Who'd have thought the woman who wrote so compellingly of a dodgy dystopian culture would then side with a group promoting something not dissimilar?

MaudTheInvincible · 21/05/2021 13:46

Yes Atwood not understanding the implications of her own work was a bit surprising, but I suspect she has dollar signs where her backbone should be.

RoyalCorgi · 21/05/2021 14:01

People are very stupid. Pink News currently has a story about Stephen Fry agreeing to read the audio version of the Ickabog. Someone wrote on their Facebook feed that they weren't willing to give any money to JK Rowling, even though it has been well publicised that the proceeds from the Ickabog are going to Covid-19 charities.

TuvoknotSpock · 21/05/2021 18:44

I thought that too and find it incredibly racist.

TuvoknotSpock · 21/05/2021 18:46

Quote fail

I was trying to quote where the PP compared Indian PEOPLE to animals

Also racist to trivialize the suffering of the Jewish people by comparing to someone whose article you disagree with

Wandawomble · 22/05/2021 00:56

“Legitimised transphobia”

What utter nonsense,
I’m now starting to lose my patience with people who willingly close their eyes to the absolute violation of women’s rights and spaces and even the words we can use for ourselves AND THE BODIES OF OUR CHILDREN and then simper that JK is transphobic.
Open your eyes.
Or keep them shut and watch whilst a generation of children’s lives are ruined whilst those adults who should be protecting them are waving flags and telling everyone to be kind.

JK has actually stood up in the face of this lunacy and bravely taken a stand because most of the people in power who are the ones who say “never again” are letting it happen... again.

Agree with this - and it’s amazing actually how many racist things are said by people who have no concept of what they are saying, no understanding of free speech and no grasp on reality.

I've never liked Atwood either as a person or a writer. She always struck me as someone who doesn't actually like women and who got pleasure in inflicting cruelties on her female characters.

(I also find her writing extremely dull)

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/05/2021 14:42

On the back of the whiny muppets on twitter crying to Waterstones that they feel 'unsafe' buying books because they are selling Kathleen Stock's new one, I thought I'd order it, then found this on pre order for £10. I know some of you like starting early for xmas. The Ikabog is also £10 too.

She's such a hateful bigot, isn't she?
Waitwhat23 · 22/05/2021 18:09

@Whatsnewpussyhat I think I've heard it all now. People feel 'unsafe' in a shop or website because it happens to stock a book they don't agree with? Is it going to jump out and bite them? This level of navel gazing, lack of critical thought and censoring is truly depressing.

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 23/05/2021 14:35

How lovely that a person can buy their way out of being criticised for bigotry! Capitalism is fabulous!

Bigotry has become so denuded of meaning it's pitiful. I can't understand what anyone who uses is getting at any more. Can you provide a different word for the message you are trying to get across here?

It would help.

WinterTrees · 23/05/2021 14:43

PumpkinSpiceWoman you may want to think about changing your username. PumpkinSpiceMenstruator is a bit more inclusive, don't you think?

Probably helps her to sleep at night for her gender bigotry by trying to offset with other charitable giving. Most people see through it.
