JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

JKR is entitled to donate how wants and I think she is very generous and moral individual aiding those less fortunate.

ArabellaScott · 17/05/2021 15:48

@HecatesCatsInFancyHats

So we've had Hitler & now Jimmy Saville. I hope you know any neutral observers reading this will know that it is beyond risible to compare JK Rowling to those two. It's so patently clear that she isn't a genocidal psychopath with a desire to conquer the world, nor is she a serial abuser of children, I know you think shrieking bigot and making these comparisons will make most people run a mile from the issue and not speak out, but it really is wearing thin. It simply highlights the paucity of your argument. The curtain has been pulled back...
Abso bogging lutely.

@NotBadConsidering

so I don't see why calling JKR GC is considered to be an insult?

You said JKR has enabled transphobes. Your evidence for this is “just look under her tweets”. This is unfounded bullshit.

However, if you did look under her tweets at the time you would have seen this:

medium.com/@rebeccarc/j-k-rowling-and-the-trans-activists-a-story-in-screenshots-78e01dca68d

I’m sure, peachgreen you have an “enabled transphobes” equivalent?

God that was hard to read. How vile.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/05/2021 15:55

I think cripez village is putting up 'Lost' posters for them as we speak.

mollythemeerkat · 17/05/2021 15:56

@babbaloushka - the tweets above are horrible but the people writing them just sound incoherent and ill-educated to me. or alternatively as if they just looked up phrases from a list of "what to say to people you disagree with". Bit pathetic really.

nixonten · 17/05/2021 15:59

Let me try this.
It may not help but I decided to share it.

Tanith · 17/05/2021 16:06

"Remember that cigar smoking disc jockey?"

You mean the one Lily Madigan used to impersonate and admire so much?

Mowzy · 17/05/2021 16:07

@Thumpsquids

I though JK's message was pretty clear:

'Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?'

No phobia there. Everything else is in support of the rights of women and girls. If you're looking specifically for transphobia, you'll find it, or, more likely, something that you deem is transphobic. Pro-women, not anti-trans. Huge difference.

👏👏👏👏

She’s a good woman. Troubled Blood was a great read got me through a dark lock down anyway both my parents agreed though none of us guessed the murderer!

SunsetBeetch · 17/05/2021 16:17

Well this thread started weird and got weirder. Has it been posted on twitter, perchance? 'Cause this is twitter levels of discourse we're being treated to (NB this is NOT a compliment.)

Best thread ever.

Thank you for your amazing and characteristic generosity, Hitler - oh fuck, I mean Joanne, don’t I?

TheChild · 17/05/2021 16:23

Thank you JK, you absolutely wonderful human!

Harry Potter gave me so much joy, and now it's doing the same for my 7 year old. It's such a special thing to be able to share it with her and relive the magic (for the 30th time!!)

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/05/2021 16:43

Well this thread started weird and got weirder.

Hasn't it just?

On a related point, I've read somewhere else that assertion that concerns as to safeguarding are dogwhistle transphobia.

If that's really the case, it tells me as much about the sinister nature of the TRA movement as I ever need to know. And it's doing trans people absolutely no favours.

Tibtom · 17/05/2021 16:44

I have to admit that I hate Harry Potter (sorry, but I tried reading one novel and thought it was awful)!

I thought they improved as they went on. By about halfway through book 5 I was enjoying it. I think they grow up a bit as you go through so the first one is much more like children's literature which can be a bit grating as an adult.

BlueLobelia · 17/05/2021 16:50

@Campervanna

I have to admit that I hate Harry Potter (sorry, but I tried reading one novel and thought it was awful)!

However, I think JKR is a wonderful, caring person who has been unjustifiably criticised. Her actions show how much she cares for others, by the help she gives to those who need it. Her name should never even remotely be used in any context involving evil, such as Hitler.

@cripez, what do you do to help those less fortunate than yourself? Your stupidity is embarrassing!

was that the first one? If so i would say keep going! (only if you wish of course!)

One of the most amazing things about the HP novels is that the books mature as the children do. So the first book is very much for 10-11 year olds, and then as the characters age the style and narrative deepens and matures in a way that is age appropriate for the ages of the characters.

It's a heck of an achievement I think.

“ She's such a hateful bigot, isn't she? ”

“ JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.”

I can’t quite see how donating money to a humanitarian cause makes you a hateful bigot.

Unsure33 · 17/05/2021 16:54

I agree that the reaction to JKR a shows nothing but ignorance .

You can not debate and discuss if you cancel every contributor just because you have basically misunderstood what they have said . Or just don’t like the tone of the debate . It’s childish , and the disgusting reactions are actually achieving the opposite of their intentions . It’s making people stronger now and more likely to stand up for what they believe in . Also now there is an army of decent people willing to contribute to court costs if necessary .

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 17/05/2021 16:55

It's always a massive WTF moment to me and really shines light on the insanity of everything when someone who has spoken as clearly as JKR does on these issues, ends up being labelled as transphobic.

She is amazing, I'm so grateful for her and the other women who are speaking for many of us, at much cost to themselves.

Thanks Cripez.

Apparently it does because instead of helping to save lives from Covid and support covid-hit communities on India, she should have given money to charities bloated on public funds who charge the public purse even more to teach misrepresentations of the law to public sector organisations and push dangerous, experimental treatments on children which leave them sterile and permanent medical patients for no measurable benefit.
