JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

Good on JKR.
@BlueLobelia Quite, should I be embarrassed to admit, as an adult and mother, that the last few books are my go to comfort reads? There's just nothing quite like them for immersibility!
I am currently re-reading The Half Blood Prince. I am on Prisoner of Azkaban with the DCs but have gone ahead. It might sound crazy but DS1 is having bullying issues at school (as the victim) and we use HP quite a bit in how to handle things. Basically centred around being honourable and honest and having integrity, and making choices every day about being a good person, supporting friends etc. That all makes HP sound more pious than it is but the fact is that HP has so many things to teach about living a good life as well as being a fabulously exciting good story.

Disappointed. You start with Saville and work your way up to Hitler when you’re wokescolding famous author/philanthropists. Because otherwise it’s just silly.

I dunno, what are they teaching kids these days? Grin

@HecatesCatsInFancyHats

Ho Chi Minh was also a prolific writer, but obviously JKR hasn't overseen the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people... yet.
Ahem! Are you denying the LITERAL VIOLENCE of JKR saying that women menstruate?

That’s hundreds of thousands of menstruating men literally being killed by her vicious, murderous transphobia Angry

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 20:33

Thank god we aren’t at risk of going to war (as in actual war). We’d be f*ed...

That's so funny. How long before that appears on twitter as 'proof' that we're Nazis. Sort of thing I'd do by accident too though.

Oh my god! Embarrassing. I mean I ❤️ JKR.

JKR we ❤️ you for your voice in fiction, feminism and your generosity, I'm sure your amazing donation will make a difference.

Thank you

This thread is absolute gold!

Huge respect to JKR for her generous donation. KhalsaAid is an outstanding charity who have help people across the world. As well as emergency relief work in the UK (you may have seen them on the news at some point), they are active in Africa, Iraq, India and many other countries. Please do take a look at their Instagram page if you have a chance - positive, inspiring and uplifting.

Easy mistake to make
Sophoclesthefox · 17/05/2021 22:06

It is an easy mistake to make.

I found myself reading Mein Kampf to my niece the other night, when I could have sworn I’d picked up HP and the Goblet of Fire.

Silly me!

I have a feeling that your comment will go a long way over the heads of the posters who compared the actions of the brilliant female writer and philanthropist with those of an evil sadistic megalomaniac who murdered millions of people.
