www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9581035/Law-student-29-said-women-vaginas-faces-disciplinary-action-university.html

I am hoping someone will be able to tell me this is a made up story because if it's not I totally despair. How did we end up here??

Just been reading about this, total disgrace. Even worse that it’s a student. Bad enough that they hound staff. But now to have a debate on the subject in class and then mute someone who doesn’t tow the party line, allow her to be bullied and then try and take disciplinary action against her?

What disciplinary action can be taken on a student who has stated a biological fact? Hope she sues the arse off the university.

BuffysBigSister · 15/05/2021 07:07

What with these students and the guy on the LNER train, it feels like we're in East Germany with everyone informing on their neighbours to the Stasi.

I am so sick of this shit

MoreAloneTime · 15/05/2021 07:13

Makes me glad I'm not a student today

Nonmaquillee · 15/05/2021 07:14

I would never usually click on a DM link but I did read this and yes, I despair too. How do med students get through a degree course??

BraveBananaBadge · 15/05/2021 07:26

That's appalling. Speaks volumes that the student involved is 29 and a mother of two. For this to happen in a law department is chilling. I hope there are no negative consequences for this poor woman.

EverythingWasGolden · 15/05/2021 07:26

But these students are the next set of adults. The next round of lawyers in this case. FFS. It is absolutely insane. I worry so much for my kids.

I'm determined they are brought with respect for facts and biology alongside respect for the choices/feelings of individual people. If this shit carries on at this rate I'm setting them up for their doom.

BuffysBigSister · 15/05/2021 07:31

I am reading Christina Lamb's book Our Bodies, Their Battlefield at the minute. Absolutely heartbreaking accounts of women suffering rape in conflicts from Bosnia to Rwanda to Iraq. The fight through the courts to get this recognised as a war crime is rage-inducing. But there are so many amazing females standing up and telling their stories - even tho they may then be shunned by their families. And then you read about these bloody numpties, lawyers of the future, who can't even stand to hear about female biology. Makes me cry with rage.

The story is also in today's Times:

archive.fo/i68rS

I wonder whether this contributed to her radicalisation: Keogh, a mother of two

EverythingWasGolden · 15/05/2021 07:38

So she is disciplined for stating biological facts and objecting to another student saying that all men are rapists. Confused

midgedude · 15/05/2021 07:40

She stated facts , that women are weaker than men, facts that lead to women being hurt and abused by men , and she is shut down

She was talking in a debate on gender feminism and the law and was muted

Feminism is no longer allowed to talk about how and why women get hurt in case it upsets someone?

nauticant · 15/05/2021 07:43

Still, assuming she doesn't get discredited, this is terrific timing to respond to both the newly enacted Scottish hate crime legislation and the parts of the Queen's Speech talking about freedom of speech in universities. I've been getting tired of the "it will never happen" stuck record.

It’s not just students. I’m aware of a situation where a member of academic staff is relentlessly pursuing a complaint against a student for articulating similar biological beliefs in a seminar. The manager who the complaint was made to is horrified and tried to get the academic to drop it, but they are insistent the student be investigated.

somethinginoffensive · 15/05/2021 07:48

How can we support her? Who should we write to?

FindTheTruth · 15/05/2021 07:48

Abertay University doesn't allow debate it seems. This is wrong on so many levels - policy failure, discrimination under the equality act, education failure, ideology takeover

'I didn't intend to be offensive but I did take part in a debate and outlined my sincerely held views.'

I hope the reformed EHRC gets involved

not a safe environment!

Shock out and out bullying of a student by a lecturer? Is that at Abertay or a different university?

GCAcademic · 15/05/2021 07:54

It’s a different university. Yes, it’s bullying of a student by an academic. A complete abuse of power.

Whatwouldscullydo · 15/05/2021 07:55

Ffs what's wrong with people.

Shes spot on.

Saying that physically women aren't as strong as men/males isn't isn't sake thing as saying we are weak. Ffs professionally offended out in force.

Igmum · 15/05/2021 07:57

This is ridiculous. I'm an academic and part of our job is to teach students to discuss, debate and evaluate evidence. From this account it seems as though Keogh was the only person in the group who could do this and the tutor muted her. WTF?

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 15/05/2021 07:58

This is absolutely horrific.

FindTheTruth · 15/05/2021 07:59

Keogh claims that she was muted by her lecturer in a video seminar when she raised concerns about a trans woman taking part in mixed martial arts bouts. “I made the point that this woman had testosterone in her body for 32 years and, as such, would be genetically stronger than your average woman,” she said.

she has a right to point this out. Women and girls are sustaining injuries in contact sports, including martial arts. A Transgender MMA Fighter beat her female opponent so severely that she suffered a broken skull... and the female opponent was NOT TOLD she would be facing a male born person in the fight beforehand. now this lecturer is continuing the tradition of DON"T TALK about it. SILENCE woman. facts are hateful, blah blah blah

Thecatonthemat · 15/05/2021 08:02

This seems to be framed as feminists who are behind the move to ban the student from speaking. This is so illogical, why would ”man hating feminists” be taking the position that women don’t have vaginas, or are not weaker generally , than men. I see something not right here. And so much for human rights when we can’t speak on certain subjects. In a live lecture she could not have been muted . Are all the student women? One of the articles implied that it was female students who were objecting?

Yes, that stood out for me as well. Shocking stuff from an academic, and even more so given that this is professional training. Can you mute your adversary in court? This is one of those few situations where I actually wish the student would leverage her status as a customer and make a complaint that she is not getting what she paid for. Take them all the way to the OIA, if necessary.
