I am hoping someone will be able to tell me this is a made up story because if it's not I totally despair. How did we end up here??

This is outrageous. Lisa has been treated appallingly by her lecturer and fellow students. I hope she sues them for the reputational damage they have inflicted on her.

RoyalCorgi · 20/05/2021 14:09

What idiots. When the Essex report came out earlier this week I had hopes (as I so often do) that it might mark a turning point. The goons in Abertay are not paying attention, it seems.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 15:21

I was genuinely considering Abertay for a Masters, but this is really putting me off.

Seriously, I wouldn’t. I would also explain to them exactly why you are not going to choose them.
SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 16:51

It's quite a personal sort of Masters too, and I could not keep my mouth shut about this.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 16:59

Really pleased to see that The Courier are stepping up to the plate again though.

Hurrah for Jim Spence, an unlikely ally but a lovely guy from what I can see.

That is an excellent article. Thanks for posting it.
SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 19:55

The Courier is proving to be a quiet part of the resistance Grin

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 20/05/2021 20:14

Me too summer

I was set to go to Edinburgh, but decided to avoid it because my research is in health and sex is a factor.

Abertay is closer to me and the department seems really nice. But, no way am I getting involved in having to tip toe through this sort of nonsense. Sod that, it'll be hard enough to study!

SoMuchForSummerLove · 20/05/2021 23:29

Wow so that's two people just on this thread. Their reputation will be in tatters.

WarriorN · 21/05/2021 06:22

[quote Igneococcus]Update in the Times, Abertay is going ahead with disciplinary action:

What absolute idiots. I hope Lisa sues.

This is a good article - lays out the issues very clearly to anyone confused by what's going on.

I wouldn't go to any university in Scotland at the moment; in fact, I'm not sure I even want to visit the country. Seems to be rife with the "professionally aggrieved".

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 21/05/2021 07:40

This is unbelievable - disciplinary action for stating a belief? University of Abertay really are going for an own goal.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 21/05/2021 07:43

nonmaquille, I live in Scotland and this kind of thing plus the hate crime bill, which seems designed to suppress free speech because of fear of the consequences, I am reconsidering whether it's somewhere I want to live long term.

LostInTheLingerieSection · 21/05/2021 07:46

I feel the same. Living in Scotland is so stressful just now.

PaterPower · 21/05/2021 10:00

They’re not just going for it, they’re also (with not much subtlety) inferring that it was the way that she made her comments and/or her ‘behaviour’ on the call, rather than the words themselves, that are the reason for the action.

It’s absolutely classic - deflect attention by smearing your ‘opponent.’

Igneococcus · 21/05/2021 10:40

In the Times comment section someone is wittering on about "context", so it's not just what and how someone says somethingy but you now have to take context into account too, though the commenter doesn't really define the context in this case.

It's funny, I don't feel like that at all, mainly because I'm surrounded by like-minded people I suppose. My colleagues (all men) are similarly baffled and pissed off about this whole issue, so it doesn't really impact me on a daily basis.

I really struggled with the election, HCB, and all that. But I do regularly tweet about all this shit in my own name, and long gone are the days when TRAs pile on. The ratio has completely flipped in my own experience.

LostInTheLingerieSection · 21/05/2021 10:53

That's good to hear SummerLove. Trying to stay positive.

I think I find it all stressful - hate crime bill, TRAs, judicial reviews, etc but also politics, economics, independence. The future feels very uncertain for us and with young children I worry endlessly about the country I'm raising them in which feels SO different to where I was raised (15 miles down the road from here...)

SoMuchForSummerLove · 21/05/2021 11:03

Oh, I don't think it's so very different really. I feel hopeful that the trans issue has peaked and we're able to find our way back from it.

Admittedly it's harder with the SNP behaving the way they are now, but I feel like 99% of the population isn't taken in by the bullshit, and sooner or later the keepers of this (which seems to be public sector bodies, universities, and politicians) are going to realise, through ballot box, legislation, or public opinion, that they're gone too far, and walk themselves back from it.

I was thinking of visiting Scotland this summer with my DC but I don’t think I can at the moment. There’s a particular kind of bigotry in the air which, coupled with nationalism, makes me really uncomfortable.
SoMuchForSummerLove · 21/05/2021 11:28

Are you really under the impression that people are going about the streets with this in the forefront of their minds? We're just queuing outside Primark like everyone else, everywhere else!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 21/05/2021 11:33

But isn’t that the problem? The reason things have got as ludicrous as they have is exactly because it’s all been slipped in under the radar. The average person in the street absolutely thinks only women have vaginas and no of course men shouldn’t play with rugby but they also think neither of those statements are contentious.....

SoMuchForSummerLove · 21/05/2021 11:39

Yeah but my point is that it's crazy to suggest not visiting a country because of 'bigotry and nationalism'.

Our public sector bodies and universities have been captured by Stonewall. The rest of us haven't. Unless your holiday involves visiting campuses to shout about vaginas, you're grand.

LostInTheLingerieSection · 21/05/2021 11:55

Yes I would never want to put anyone off visiting. We still have the same beautiful beaches and castles and mountains and lochs and friendly faces! It's more for people living here and thinking of their futures that it affects.
