Transman Prinz Chiyo Gomes splits gay community: gay man accused of hate

Prinz Chiyo is a transman who entered (and I'm told won, but can't confirm) the Mr Gay England competition last year:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53936529

Chiyo has talked publicly about Chiyo's experience of sexual abuse from an early ago. Chiyo is also an icon among young girls who want to escape the burden of femininity and is celebrated on BBC's Newsbeat.

A gay man who tweets as Sheridan Sinclair recently wrote an article about Chiyo and why he objected to a someone who talks openly about their vagina and the fact they menstruate qualifying to compete in Mr Gay England. This has set off a Twitterstorm. Sheridan Sinclair has been forced to close his Twitter account and take down his article.

Before he was shut down, Sheridan Sinclair pointed out that many gay men have spent large parts of their lives being told there's something wrong with them, that they should learn to love 'pussy', and that having Chiyo compete in Mr Gay England is homophobic.

Sheridan Sinclair has been reported to the police for hate crime and is expecting a visit from the rozzers this morning. Fair Cop, I hope he's been in touch with you.

Tragic, indeed. I worry that Prinz Chiyo is very vulnerable. Does nobody ever consider the psychological wellbeing of people putting themselves into the public eye?

ArabellaScott · 30/03/2021 11:32
  • and that was a very well written and sensitive article. I hope Sheridan is also okay.
PaleBlueMoonlight · 30/03/2021 11:47

@CharlieParley

Chiyo hasn't gone down the gender reassignment route, so isn't covered under the EA 2010 by the protected characteristic of Gender reassignment.

There is no requirement to transition in any way for a transgender person to have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment. No social transition and certainly not a medical one. All a person need do to acquire protection under gender reassignment is identify as trans and communicate this in some way or form.

Which Chiyo has done. Therefore Chiyo is protected under the Equality Act 2010.

Was coming on to say this. They are absolutely covered by the Equality Act protection afforded by the category of gender reassignment (and rightly so).

I don't think the fact that Sheridan's felt forced to close his Twitter account and remove his article from Substack indicates that he's feeling particularly okay!

Obviously what he's going through now is pretty much what dozens, hundreds, of women have already been through. They all have my sympathy. Let's hope what's happening to him opens as many eyes as the response to Posie and all the other women who've come under attack.

Let's hope it does even more so because he cannot be so easily dismissed as just a 'TERF'
They'll have to think of another acronym at the least.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 30/03/2021 12:00

Yes - however, that's pretty much the basis for reality TV and populist columnists. It works out spectacularly well for a tiny number of people and adds power to the vortex of catastrophe that consumes others (and the people around them).

manatsu · 30/03/2021 12:03

Can someone please explain the Victoria carriage thing to me? What is it referencing? Google didn't help me.

ArabellaScott · 30/03/2021 12:05

manatsu, the stage name is 'Miss Carriage'.

Manderleyagain · 30/03/2021 12:05

At the moment, it is the hate crime monitored strands, rather than (or as well as) the protected characteristics in the equality act that are the important thing.

Sinclair has been accused of a transphobic hate crime. I think that is based on 'transgender status' rather than the EA definition, but as it only has to be perceived as transphobic it probably doesn't matter what the definition of trans is. I can't imagine it will meet any threshold for crime (what will they consider it against? Grossly offensive under the communication act?) but presumably Sinclair will now have a file with 'hate crime - non crime' or something written on it.

He & other gay men should sue Mr gay England and Mr gay UK for indirect discrimination on sexual orientation - they are making their competitions a hostile environment for homosexuals by saying its wrong to be homosexual & be out & proud about it (using the ordinary meaning of homosexual). But I am not a lawyer.

At the very least it would be funny if they were reported to the police for homophobic hate incidents. But alas my principles of free speech don't allow me to encourage anyone to do it.

Shedbuilder · 30/03/2021 12:08

Someone from another source has told me that Sheridan's Twitter account was shut down and he's been banned. Apparently people are accusing him of promoting that hate group, LGB Alliance! You couldn't make this stuff up, could you?

Drag Queen's stage name is "Miss Carriage".

@Beowulfa

I'd like to think your average copper has their head in their hands when instructed to investigate such "crimes".

When are the majority of LGB folk going to realise being lumped in with T is detrimental to their hard-won rights?

This is the penny that has to drop sooner or later. I for one would be screaming if I was LGB and had to be part of the T agenda just because of my sexuality.

But of course, the L, the G and the B have been silenced, like women, to further the T.

SunsetBeetch · 30/03/2021 12:13

They've since slightly changed how it appears on their twitter account after (rightly) getting shit for it. Of course the women who objected are nasty terfs.

NecessaryScene1 · 30/03/2021 12:14

Someone from another source has told me that Sheridan's Twitter account was shut down and he's been banned

No, he deleted the Substack himself, and deactivated the Twitter, partly out of concern for impact on his husband. He posted a bit about it on Twitter when he briefly reactivated it Sunday night.

That was a heartbreaking thread.

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 30/03/2021 12:15

Just had a look at the Twitter link... one of the comments is from a drag queen called Miss Carriage.... Miss Victoria Carriage....

It's fucking horrible isn't it? And yet so many female friends, straight and lesbian, love drag and think I'm being stuck up by finding it misogynistic.

Thelnebriati · 30/03/2021 12:21

If Sheridan Sinclair has been reported to the police, then homophobia is now State sanctioned.

A young woman on twitter once called me a terf for saying the Drag name "Cheryl Hole" was misogynistic. I despair, I really do.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 30/03/2021 12:31

I don’t get the ‘Cheryl hole’ one but some names are bloody awful.

EsmaCannonball · 30/03/2021 12:32

So a gay man faces a police investigation over a statement of fact. MRA entryists really have found that way of making feminism and homosexual rights campaigning illegal, haven't they?

SunsetBeetch · 30/03/2021 12:34

It's what some men call Vaginas. Or even women, i.e. you're just a hole to them.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 30/03/2021 12:41

Whit? Bleugh.

manatsu · 30/03/2021 12:41

Oh. Jesus. There's parodying stereotypical womenhood and then there's completely mocking something seriously painful and traumatic that only women can experience. How cruel.

WallaceinAnderland · 30/03/2021 12:42

What would happen if he didn't have a chat with the police. Would they have to arrest him? Is he under any obligation to speak with them at all.

MazekeenSmith · 30/03/2021 12:42

Chiyo posted on Instagram that they have a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Male of that what you will.
