Transman Prinz Chiyo Gomes splits gay community: gay man accused of hate

Shedbuilder · 30/03/2021 10:11

Prinz Chiyo is a transman who entered (and I'm told won, but can't confirm) the Mr Gay England competition last year:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53936529

Chiyo has talked publicly about Chiyo's experience of sexual abuse from an early ago. Chiyo is also an icon among young girls who want to escape the burden of femininity and is celebrated on BBC's Newsbeat.

A gay man who tweets as Sheridan Sinclair recently wrote an article about Chiyo and why he objected to a someone who talks openly about their vagina and the fact they menstruate qualifying to compete in Mr Gay England. This has set off a Twitterstorm. Sheridan Sinclair has been forced to close his Twitter account and take down his article.

twitter.com/mrgayengland/status/1376101627959074821

Before he was shut down, Sheridan Sinclair pointed out that many gay men have spent large parts of their lives being told there's something wrong with them, that they should learn to love 'pussy', and that having Chiyo compete in Mr Gay England is homophobic.

Sheridan Sinclair has been reported to the police for hate crime and is expecting a visit from the rozzers this morning. Fair Cop, I hope he's been in touch with you.

@EsmaCannonball

So a gay man faces a police investigation over a statement of fact. MRA entryists really have found that way of making feminism and homosexual rights campaigning illegal, haven't they?
It's all sunlight though.
yourhairiswinterfire · 30/03/2021 12:50

Can Sheridan report them for a homophobic hate crime?

It'd be nice to see someone stand up to this homophobic bullying coming from the 'community', but I get that this is really distressing for him (and his husband, it seems) so he may not want to.

I'm so sad and angry for him.

SpaceBatAngelDragon · 30/03/2021 12:53

Not forgetting drag queen "Anna Bortion" and "Malestia Child". But you lot simply have no sense of humour according to Pride Hmm :

SpaceBatAngelDragon · 30/03/2021 12:54

What will the police investigation be based on exactly?

WallaceinAnderland · 30/03/2021 12:56

I wouldn't be talking to the police or co-operating with them in any way unless they arrested me (for what?) and even then it would be name, address and silence.

DaisiesandButtercups · 30/03/2021 13:09

Sexual orientation is innate and there is nothing we can do to change it. If as a heterosexual woman you have suffered brutally at the hands of heterosexual men since childhood I can well imagine wanting to avoid heterosexual men, but the innate orientation remains, perhaps homosexual men feel safer for some women who have been so traumatised?

Having suffered so much anyone would need help, time, space and peace to find whatever healing is possible. I agree with OP about public self destructive/self harm behaviour being enabled. This is a serious problem with gender ideology- everything else gets missed and/or ignored, all the other traumas and mental health needs are untreated and the consequences of that for individuals can be further devastation.

kesstrel · 30/03/2021 13:16

Chiyo posted on Instagram that they have a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Male of that what you will.

Society has now handed a huge amount of power to individuals with cluster B personality disorders, a group that is clinically known for manipulative behaviours. The damaging consequences to ordinary people who happen to come within their radar can be enormous. And letting them determine or influence policy is sheer madness.

It's an interesting one whether organisers of TV shows or competitions or 'the media' have any responsibility to people who are clearly vulnerable and damaged who are choosing to put themselves out into the media limelight like this.

On the one hand I think the view has traditionally been that grown adults should know what the consequences might be and by seeking out publicity they accept that but with the reality TV show suicides that did seem to shift a bit and now they have advisers and media coaching and stuff.

I feel desperately sorry for Chiyo in many ways and I worry that they are ill equipped mentally to cope with this but in the end they have actively sought out this publicity and attention. It's hard to protect an adult from their own choices. I wonder if one day they will regret the whole thing as Keira Bell did.

WarriorN · 30/03/2021 13:41

Thanks for the share of the article, it's really well written.

I'd seen something of this on twitter but not understood the details.

Chiyo has clearly suffered a lot of trauma.

It's worrying that so many young women are following them.

I can't see many in the gay community being happy about this. Exactly what lesbians have been dealing with for years.

Bawdrip · 30/03/2021 13:58

@ArabellaScott

manatsu, the stage name is 'Miss Carriage'.
Oh that makes more sense. I was thinking it was Vic tore ya carriage. Which is also grim
CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/03/2021 14:03

It is bizarre where the BBC felt they should draw the taste and decency line with the names on Drag Race U.K.

AWhorA they considered just fine
Sister Fibrosis they made change their name to Sister Sister

Last series
Cheryl Hole- fine
Crystal Beth- had to shorten it to just crystal

Kinda looks like as long as it's just women that the names are offensive to that's OK.

Quote from article.

The 18 queens on this list deserve some extra love because their names will immediately make you laugh (and then in some cases, cringe). So here they are: 18 funny (and punny) names of queens currently in the drag scene.

No. No, I didn't "immediately" laugh at Malestia Child. I just felt revolted at the idea of making a joke about child abuse.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 30/03/2021 14:18

The child one is odd. Surely such a person is most likely to be a man?

FlyPassed · 30/03/2021 15:37

I thought the transman in the gay sauna would be a turning point

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3410716-Transman-kicked-out-of-gay-sauna

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 30/03/2021 15:57

so did I, Fly, but, AFAIK that was just one person - not hoardes of them.

WarriorN · 30/03/2021 17:21

Some friends and I had to report a drag queen who had a name associated with that little beauty queen girl who was murdered in the 90s. Also dressed like a beaten up / zombie US cheerleader, with pigtails.

We all pointed out what bad taste it was on the fb advert. Which was pulled; no idea if the event went ahead or if they're still using that name.

nickymanchester · 30/03/2021 17:57

@NecessaryScene1

Thank you so much for that link, it was a very thoughtful piece.

I have a couple of gay friends that I'd like to share this with, if only to let them know they're not the only people who think like that - even though they thought they were and that they must be terrible people for thinking like that.

That is revolving.
WarriorN · 30/03/2021 18:39

Yes, Google shows me there's at least another drag queen with the name and that JonBenet Ramsey has at times been a bad taste Halloween dress up idea in the US.

PronounssheRa · 30/03/2021 18:41

Can Sheridan reportthemfor a homophobic hate crime?

Yes they can, and at this point I suggest they do.

gardenbird48 · 30/03/2021 18:55

It is interesting that one group of people totally recognise that sexual orientation tends to be fixed and is quite keen for the sexual orientation to be respected.

Many people that are heterosexual before transition will often remain attracted to the same type of people ie. male people that are attracted to women before transition tend to continue to be attracted to women after transition. If sexual orientation was seen to be changeable in the same way as their sex identification, the opposite would happen, therefore sexual orientation is known to be fixed unless....

you are in the group of other people who are fully expected to override their sexual orientation to accommodate opposite sex people in a same sex dating pool, like Sheridan (and many other gay and lesbians).

It is a bit of a one way street.

ArcheryAnnie · 30/03/2021 19:10

Chiyo's background should be a massive signal to the BBC, to the beauty contest, and to everyone else, that this is an incredibly vulnerable person. I completely understand them wanting to escape womanhood.

However, escaping womanhood simply isn't possible if you are born female, and it damages all women if you insist that it is possible, as Chiyo has done.

I do hope Sheridan and his husband are OK.

It's like the side-discussion here about the vaunted primacy of "lived experience" that has created a sacred caste that must not be examined:

I find it a very perplexing ethical issue. Progress will only be made in many areas when minoritised communities and previously silenced voices are heard in public and part of the default structure of leadership and power. But, Nolan still obtains. tbh, I'd be very uneasy about some people being centred as expert witnesses to some topics.

I am aware that the process of being put through the usual scrutiny for some processes is invasive and it has the potential to be intrusive and might be traumatic (depending on the history of some people). It's an ethical conundrum I find it difficult to resolve.
