How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

@Splann

I’m a woman, no further clarification is needed.

Why can’t people who identify as something they weren’t born as refer to themselves as non-cis whatever? Why do I have to change what I call myself when I’m not the one changing?

This.

I don't consider myself cis. I am not defined with reference to sexist stereotypes or other people. I am a woman. An adult human female.

I consider the imposition of the word cis an offensive and hostile act.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2021 23:56

I've seen and voted in that poll. If we did a more specific one, then the percentage who identify as Cis should be even lower as the 9% (last time I looked) who feel they do have a gender identity would be those who identify as trans or nonbinary or whatever.

hallouminatus · 18/02/2021 01:07

I see your point, Errol. Of course a self-selecting poll on Mumsnet is never going to give really robust data. A properly conducted poll would be interesting, but, as always the way the question is worded and the way terms are defined would be crucial. If 'cis' were defined as 'not trans' (as it occasionally is), the responses would be very different. That's clearly not the way people on this thread are understanding the word.

What’s the difference between using Cis & Real? I am a real woman, I am a Cis woman. Both mean exactly the same thing right? No one is going to be happy with real so why use Cis? Let’s have generic woman and then Trans/non binary woman person if needed.

ChancesWhatChances · 18/02/2021 01:14

I identify as an adult human female because I am an adult human female. I’m a woman, not a cis. Trans people are more than welcome to add on whatever add ons they want to their identity but they don’t get to dictate what biological woman are.

Walkacrossthesand · 18/02/2021 01:15

I'm an adult human female and have started to tick 'prefer not to say' for the questionnaire enquiring about what I identify as. I don't identify as anything. I'm female.

ChancesWhatChances · 18/02/2021 01:15

@Akire but we already have that, we have women and we have trans-women. There’s no need to add real or cis to anything as trans people have their trans label.

Akire · 18/02/2021 01:15

Maybe original woman sounds better than real. Still means the same thing to most of the worlds population.

FancySomeChips · 18/02/2021 01:18

Female woman here.
Enough of the crappy terminology to confuse what I am and will always be.
Female. Woman. Mother. Daughter. Sister.
I like pink, sewing, watercolours, ballet and films about gangsters, drugs and with loads of swearing.
I don’t need a sliding scale of character traits to tell me who I am.
If you do, go for it! But stop erasing and trying to confuse what I am.

fantasmasgoria1 · 18/02/2021 01:18

I am a woman. There is no cis about that.

LouJ85 · 18/02/2021 03:31

Never heard it before and would never use it to refer to myself. I identify as female, and that's the end of that.

Hepsie · 18/02/2021 03:52

Women don't need a prefix and they are not a subset of their own sex class. Woman is fine.

bikelights · 18/02/2021 05:19

I guess it depends on who you ask. No one with any understanding of it's subtle role in the oppression of women would be happy to be described as cis, but a lot of women wouldn't know that and might 'go along with it'

oldwomanwhoruns · 18/02/2021 05:20

Woman. No prefix.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 18/02/2021 05:32

I'm female. I like some things that are stereotypically associated with women, some things which are stereotypically associated with men, and many things which don't neatly align to such stereotypes - cheese, the beach, wildlife photography, antiques - what does that make me? Answer - middleaged! My gender identity is the Antiques Roadshow

South Park on "cisgender"...

Shineonyoucrazy · 18/02/2021 06:06

Woman/adult human female here. Calling me cis gender misgenders me. I have no gender identity and an eclectic gender expression and I am not willing to declare anything to the state or commerce about this. It's a triggering subject for me.

Riojasmoothy · 18/02/2021 06:10

I am a woman, no prefix needed.

Eviebeans · 18/02/2021 06:50

After I'd Googled it I certainly don't view/label myself in that way. I'm a woman. I object to those "making the change" trying to change me. I'm fine - leave me be...

FishWithoutABike · 18/02/2021 06:53

I don’t mind the use of ‘cis’ when discussing trans or gender issues. It sometimes helps to have a word for clarification. I don’t ‘identify’ as anything though. I’m just a woman because I am an adult human female.

Surely "trans" is the qualifying word? So woman and trans-woman. Man and trans-man. No need for cis at all.
whiteroseredrose · 18/02/2021 07:08

Exactly.

Woman and transwoman
Man and transman

All that is needed.

I was at college with an American who talked about non-decaffeinated coffee..... that's just coffee. One is real, one has been chemically altered.
Same as above.

DaisyHeadMaisy · 18/02/2021 07:09

I find the use of CIS deeply offensive. I am a woman.
