We are now non trans women.....

It's the "think like a woman" bullshit that really grinds my gears.

I'm a woman in STEM. A late middle aged woman in STEM. My schooldays, university, early career was an uphill struggle against the sexist stereotype that there were "men's ways of thinking" and "women's ways of thinking" and only the former were appropriate for science.

Which is why I find the statement "I think like a woman" deeply offensive at a very personal level.

TRAs are always banging on about how wrong pronouns and misgendering are an "attack on their identity." Well I take the claim that there is such a thing as a "womanly way of thinking" as an attack on my identity as a rational human being (who happens, by a contingent quirk of biology, to be a woman).

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 23/10/2020 22:50

Peter “children can consent” Tatchell Hmm
Unsurprising that he thinks Men should be allowed to play in the women’s game & presumably that adults should be allowed to play with.... 🤮

EyesOpening · 23/10/2020 22:51

@yourhairiswinterfire

What is it to do/be/feel all of these things?

I did see a transwoman say, very seriously, that it was the overwhelming urge to clean all the time Hmm But they weren't sexist, you understand. We all know that every woman is just itching all day to get home from their delicate jobs and straight into their pink marigolds.

I nearly always have an overwhelming not to clean!

I wonder what it's like to think like a woman, I wonder if anyone would enlighten me

EyesOpening · 23/10/2020 22:52

*overwhelming urge

@Butterer

I'm wondering if there's some kind of misconception that we just don't think?
I think it is often stereotypical ideas about how women might think when seen from outside.
EyesOpening · 23/10/2020 22:57

my husband's often pointing out the dirt and dust, he must be a woman, I can't wait to tell him

EyesOpening · 23/10/2020 22:59

I'm the one who puts the bins out, mows the lawn and I sorted out the MOTs, am I a bloke?

My thoughts exactly. Always gives off rather a whiff.
ChattyLion · 23/10/2020 23:01

Why can’t men let women have safety, privacy and dignity? Those things aren’t theirs to give away on women’s behalf. How dare they.

FireUnderTheHand · 23/10/2020 23:02

@MiladyRenata

We think like women We feel like women We act like women We dress like women

Our biology is "wrong", but we had no say in that. So why exclude us?

How does a woman think? How does it feel to be a woman? How does a woman act? How does a woman dress?
WhataFarce76 · 23/10/2020 23:03

I do every scrap of DIY in the house. I paint, tile, build flatpacks, garden, and wallpaper. But I also crochet and sew and bake. What does that make me? Do I need help?
Nope. Still just a women.

This is part of the new essentialism from the political left. From that angle you and I should identify as nonbinary persons, I guess. I see this as really going backwards on women's rights. Once we remove the biological basis for defining what a woman is then all that other stuff will replace it and almost all of it is sexist.

People always say that I’m very like a cat -

Do you have a daily mad half hour where you run around randomly?

VaggieMight · 23/10/2020 23:09

He's a disgusting man. I really liked him because he did a citizens arrest on Robert Mugabe, but in light of his comments about age of consent and women I find him repugnant. I'm surprised he's still got a career.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 23/10/2020 23:12

God, Tatchell is such a weapons grade bellend - what a ratio on that Tweet though!

No, that ain't gonna cut the mustard around here, you will have to do better than that I'm afraid.

Anyway, I thought the official line now was that no one was born in the wrong body? I can't keep up!

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 23/10/2020 23:32

What is it to feel like a women?

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 23/10/2020 23:33

(other than a Shania twain song!)

FireUnderTheHand · 23/10/2020 23:43

Appropriation regardless of age and regardless of what is appropriated is an offense.

It is offensive to the people that actually end up being represented by the appropriation as it effectively denigrates the appropriated's claim to their actual existence.

As a female I would never claim to be a TW - a TW's body, life, everything about a TW is of a TW of which some is unique to TW and some is unique to the individuals but most importantly the lens comes first from being male.

For women, our bodies, our lives, everything about us is of women of which some is unique to women and some is unique to the individuals but the lens comes first from being female.

Gender varies by time and by society while biology and the trappings thereof are consistent throughout time and around the globe.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 23/10/2020 23:43

To me it feels like knowing that carrying, birthing and feeding children has irrecoverably changed my appearance, my prospects at work for now and my priorities with my time. I find it hard to separate any feeling of "woman" from my own journey, so I guess everyone is different?

MerchedCymru · 24/10/2020 00:18

As a young woman I read Andrea Dworkin's assertion:
"No transcendence of the male system is possible as long as men have the power of naming... As Prometheus stole fire from the gods, so feminists will have to steal the power of naming from men, hopefully to better effect.”

I thought it sounding exciting and revolutionary but didn't actually get it at all (my feminism was enthusiastic but vague on the detail to be honest). Now her words seem positively chilling.

This isn't just a bit of linguistic adjustment for politeness sake. It's at the heart of the whole sorry edifice of male privilege. Tatchell can do one.

Sn0tnose · 24/10/2020 01:14

Trans women are women.

Why is this so difficult?

Ooh, ooh, I’m pretty new to all of this, but I think I know this one! Is it because of science?

We think like women
We feel like women
We act like women
We dress like women

Our biology is "wrong", but we had no say in that. So why exclude us? You don’t seem to understand that there is no thinking, feeling, acting or dressing like a woman. You are either a biological female or you are not. And I will call you whatever name you introduce yourself as, and I won’t judge whatever clothing you choose to wear, or how you choose to express yourself, and I would defend you if I saw you being abused for your choices. But if you really cannot understand why biological females would want to exclude non biological females from our single sex spaces, then you are demonstrating just how little understanding you truly have of the complexities and the realities of being biologically female.

NiceGerbil · 24/10/2020 02:56

The problem here is that lots of men don't really see women as full people.

They actually think we are sort of 2D cardboard cutouts with no internal lives.

That's why they get so angry with women who don't conform, and always have.

We are supposed to be what they want us to be. No more, no less.

The arrogance of saying they know how we think, feel etc is nothing new.

Don't men always think they know our minds, thoughts, motivations better than we know them ourselves?

NiceGerbil · 24/10/2020 02:57

And the fact we can have no words for the half of the worlds population who when born have 'it's a girl' said is really extreme.
