Johnny Depp. What if he loses the libel trial?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 09/07/2020 13:29

if he loses, as a domestic abuser, Will his canon of work be cancelled?

Will actors refuse to work with him? Will they condemn him?

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean ride be closed? (Actually there are a few Disney rides that are dodgy with a BLM lens, but that’s a different thread).

I’m willing to bet that nothing will be deleted and that he will continue to be offered work after a period of rehabilitation. Compare and contrast with the treatment JKR or any other woman who, for having a view about biology.

Anyone else care to make a prediction?

Obviously, this is entirely speculative and is not a commentary on the libel action or court proceedings

OP posts:
HoneysuckIejasmine · 09/07/2020 13:31

There already was an outcry and attempt to cancel him. JKR got a lot of flack for not removing him from the film, iirc

coffeetime11 · 09/07/2020 13:56

Let us wait for the outcome.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 14:45

The court live reports from sky are certainly eye opening.

If he loses I expect him to be so very cancelled (unlikely as that only happens to middle aged women....know your place). Either way he shouldn’t have the roles he does on his self-admitted behaviour.

Z0rr0 · 09/07/2020 14:49

I adored JD when I was younger and obv find him very problematic now. Their relationship sounds fecked up on both sides. But, a bit like Spacey, I do think it's possible to separate the artist from their work.
Can be hard, but I do think possible.
I always assumed Depp would become his hero Marlon Brando, retire to France and get fat.

DelightfulCrow · 09/07/2020 15:16

Did anyone listen to the audio released of their arguments? I know it’s only a snapshot, but after listening I felt a lot of sympathy for him.
Listening to the argument reminded me, like nothing else I have ever heard, of my parents’ often (usually?🤷🏼‍♀️) toxic relationship. AH reminds me of my mother, who has bullied and fought my dad for decades. My mother isn’t a terrible person, she’s a person who suffered trauma and hasn’t coped well. She has mental health difficulties which have impacted all the family. To describe her as an abuser would be somehow lazy and inaccurate, but it’s nearly that, and sometimes it is exactly that.
I really hope JD is found innocent of the accusations levelled at him.

DelightfulCrow · 09/07/2020 15:17

I mean to say that AH reminded me of my mother. Think that was unclear.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 15:35

@DelightfulCrow sorry for your childhood, but do you not think that you might be projecting?

Have you all read his responses in court?? His behaviour is abusive and he appears to be a drug addled fool.

DelightfulCrow · 09/07/2020 15:48

Yes, you’re right. My assessment is definitely unsafe precisely because of the inevitable projection.
I will look at more of the court admissions etc, thanks.
I think I can say with some certainty though that AH is a nut job.
(Also, my childhood was ok. Angry mother etc, but not awful. I do feel sorry for my dad though.)

Mumoblue · 09/07/2020 15:52

The movie industry doesn't have the best record at "cancelling" famous men who commit crimes, so he'll probably be fine.

I haven't looked into it myself, all I've heard is a lot of negative things directed at AH - but apparently some texts JD sent were really disgusting so at the moment I think they're both gross. But like I said I haven't really looked into it, it sounds like a big mess.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 15:54

Thanks @DelightfulCrow - here it is - news.sky.com/story/johnny-depp-v-amber-heard-all-the-evidence-from-day-three-of-explosive-libel-trial-12024379

WeeBisom · 09/07/2020 15:59

I think that even if Depp wins this trial he has lost. It's only day three of the three week trial and he's already damaged his reputation with all the things that have come to light.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/07/2020 16:03

I suspect whatever the outcome, he won't work for Disney again, since they don't do this kind of shadow over someone as part of their brand. The talk about the Pirates of the Carribean reboot suggests it's not likely to involve him.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2020 16:04

Yes, he's nose deep in The Streisand Effect and still he ploughes on.

The only thing we can reliably know about them is that they are volatile individuals and are better off apart.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/07/2020 16:08

Surely he's kind of done with the Pirates movies now? He's done so many of them, it seems likely it would be left for a bit and then revived in reboot form anyway because that's a pretty winning formula for film studios right now. Poor old batman barely gets a couple of years rest in between actor/franchise reboots these days!

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Fantastic Beasts series. Depp is the main villain in that, so far we have two of a five part series. They can't write out the character. Would they recast?

0963158b · 09/07/2020 16:12

However badly he's coming out of it, AH sounds more malicious and malign I think.

fatgirlslimmer · 09/07/2020 16:16

@AgnesNaismith Have you all read his responses in court?? His behaviour is abusive and he appears to be a drug addled fool.

He may be but she is an abuser by her own admission. She has admitted to hitting him, calling him names, throwing objects at him and shitting in their bed. Is anyone calling for her work to be cancelled? Did the sun write that she was a husband beater?

They may be a fucked up couple but he is not in court denying that, he is denying the allegations that he is a wife beater and comparable to Harvey Weinstein.

@CuriousaboutSamphire The only thing we can reliably know about them is that they are volatile individuals and are better off apart.

Definitely this ^

I have actually missed most of this because I'm back at work. But the shit in the bed nugget was puzzling me last night.
Has she admitted to it and said why?

SirGawain · 09/07/2020 16:26

Johnny Depp. What if he loses the libel trial?

I couldn't give a toss!

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 09/07/2020 16:32

I have no idea what went on, but this is so obviously a toxic, volatile ,violent relationship riddled with alcohol, drugs and mindfucks.

And I believe Depp when he says it would've ended in death. Going by statistics, probably hers.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 16:37

If he loses I'd expect that he'd go quiet for a year or two, then come back after some sort of PR drafted public statement about healing and moving on and etc. Hollywood isn't exactly known for withholding long term support from men over questionable private behavior. There are known child abusers whose careers are still thriving.

Maybe I should be less cynical and we've passed some sort of cultural tipping point, but eh, will believe it when I see it.

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/07/2020 16:37

I guess they could recast in Fantastic Beasts. God knows who. But we had 2 Dumbledores and it was ok.

DelightfulCrow · 09/07/2020 16:39

@AgnesNaismith thanks for the link.

I don’t see much in there which convinces me he is abusive. Unstable, pathetic etc etc yes, but abusive no. I guess time will tell.

RoyalCorgi · 09/07/2020 16:39

I think that even if Depp wins this trial he has lost. It's only day three of the three week trial and he's already damaged his reputation with all the things that have come to light.

This is what's interesting to me. I've had conversations with other people who say, well, being a drug addict who loses his temper and throws stuff and collapses on the floor is one thing, being a wife beater is another. And that's certainly the view that Depp seems to be taking - that these are qualitatively different things.

But I'm not sure. He has already, by his own admission, done plenty of things that make him look completely unhinged. In most industries, he'd be unemployable.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 16:42

In most industries, but being an unstable addict is rather less unusual in the one he happens to work in.

LouHotel · 09/07/2020 16:42

The oddest part of this whole case for me is usually when a high profile person is unmasked as an abuser you tend to get a wave of other women coming out with other accounts to corroborate.

To my knowledge it's the exact opposite. She is beyond toxic but I dont want to say that one victim isn't enough.
