Johnny Depp. What if he loses the libel trial?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 09/07/2020 13:29

if he loses, as a domestic abuser, Will his canon of work be cancelled?

Will actors refuse to work with him? Will they condemn him?

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean ride be closed? (Actually there are a few Disney rides that are dodgy with a BLM lens, but that’s a different thread).

I’m willing to bet that nothing will be deleted and that he will continue to be offered work after a period of rehabilitation. Compare and contrast with the treatment JKR or any other woman who, for having a view about biology.

Anyone else care to make a prediction?

Obviously, this is entirely speculative and is not a commentary on the libel action or court proceedings

This is the YouTube I watched about the leaked calls.
growinggreyer · 09/07/2020 16:45

I don’t see much in there which convinces me he is abusive.

Men who hit objects and smash the house up are literally acting out their rage and abuse. The message is 'I could smash you up like this.'

Have you ever seen a chimpanzee or a gorilla ripping branches and drumming on tree trunks? It is the exact same thing and it is intended to be terrifying.

SunbathingDragon · 09/07/2020 16:47

I think he might win on a technicality because there is no evidence that he hit Amber. However, he was abusive to her without any doubt. Amber was also abusive to him. Two wrongs don’t make a right and I think both will struggle with their reputations after this court hearing.

Most of all, I feel for Johnny’s children. How horrendous to have this dragged through court.

Z0rr0 · 09/07/2020 16:56

It's such a shame that he went down the drugs / alcohol spiral and into this awful toxic relationship.
He's always taken drugs, from what I can glean from interviews pre Pirates, and made some odd decisions, but this sounds next level.
He seemed so sweet when he was younger and doing all those quirky movies. I really thought he had his shit together when he married Vanessa Paradis and became a doting dad.
I don't know what this crazy midlife crisis was but it's really hurt a bunch of people I think.
I remember when she first made the claims about him I was so disappointed and kind of angry at the likes of Terry Gilliam who said she was a liar and a money grabber (or words to that effect) because you always believe the woman, right?
But everyone in his family and friends seem to have defended him, and now more details have come out it does seem a much more complex picture.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 17:12

Unsure if it’s a midlife crisis - he has said himself in this case that he started taking drugs at 14 to numb himself from his awful childhood.

He also admitted going into rages with her as he was jealous of other men, writing messages in his own blood on a mirror and being angry with her because she tried to stop him from taking drugs and drinking. He constantly sent messages apologising to her following his blackouts and at one point promised her Dad he’d never do ‘it’ again....He was without doubt abusive.

Does anyone have any facts about her being abusive? Not that it matters....

SunbathingDragon · 09/07/2020 17:14

Does anyone have any facts about her being abusive?

The numerous recorded conversations that are available which were intended to be used as part of marriage counselling. In them Amber admits on many occasions to hitting Johnny.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 17:17

Ah...sorry, have been googling but struggling to find them...

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 09/07/2020 17:25

@TheProdigalKittensReturn

If he loses I'd expect that he'd go quiet for a year or two, then come back after some sort of PR drafted public statement about healing and moving on and etc. Hollywood isn't exactly known for withholding long term support from men over questionable private behavior. There are known child abusers whose careers are still thriving.

Maybe I should be less cynical and we've passed some sort of cultural tipping point, but eh, will believe it when I see it.

That’s my expectation too.

Johnny dated Winona Ryder when she was 17 and he was 27. He destroyed a hotel room in a fit of rage when he was dating Kate Moss. He's been awful for a long time.

Search in YouTube. There are a few.
QuentinWinters · 09/07/2020 17:32

Yep. No doubt he is abusive, will be interesting to see if the court agrees that "wife beater" is libellous.

I don't thing her behaviour justifies his abuse. That's part of my problem with this whole thing. She may be awful but as an adult he has loads of options to deal with that which aren't abusive.

Hoggleludo · 09/07/2020 17:35

I've been listening and reading all the documentation. Everything. I've read the texts. The live feeds of the court. The lot. The depositions

She's a butter. I guarantee it. She got done in her last relationship for domestic violence. He was with many people before this without even a hint

He's notoriously private about his life and I feel to do this and put all his dirty washing public. Means this means a lot to him.

Btw. Not a fan of his at all. Just interested as I've known a few to work with both parties. He's got good word of mouth
She doesn't.

Hoggleludo · 09/07/2020 17:36

However I don't think he will work for Disney again. Sadly.

netflixismysidehustle · 09/07/2020 17:36

There will always a vocal minority who will demand he's cancelled. I personally don't think he'll be cancelled. If he is found guilty then there will be a lot of "Amber is abusive too"

The drug and drinks is not a surprise to the public and not an issue as he's never preached clean living and doesn't have politician type responsibility. People would notice if Vanessa Paradis had testified that he was out of control in front of their kids but she's been supportive and as a successful white man, there would be a twisted few who would spin it as "tortured genius " sort of bollocks

Hoggleludo · 09/07/2020 17:39

I also think he will give up after this and concentrate on his band.

She's a person with strong opinions about what goes first on scones?

PhoebeSnow · 09/07/2020 17:42

I don’t believe that he is a wife beater, so I hope he wins and his career continues. All this cancelling is bloody nonsense.

netflixismysidehustle · 09/07/2020 17:43

Just remembered how Alex Baldwin left a voicemail for his young dd and called her a pig and that didn't affect his career.

I think Depp could go back but he'll lay low (go to rehab?) or just retire and play in his band like someone else suggested

Buzzfrightyears · 09/07/2020 17:44

What I think speaks volumes is that previous partners are willing to defend him and vouch for him even if they aren’t together anymore. AH is known to have behaved like this previously.
I believe him. I think he comes across as respectful and humble when I’ve seen interviews.

Also; the POTC movie series was based ON the ride, the ride has been open since the 1960s I believe so it would be completely stupid.

SunbathingDragon · 09/07/2020 17:45

@Hoggleludo

How can he? He has admitted being abusive, even if he is denying physical assault. Whilst he was long rumoured to drink too much and take drugs, the court hearing shows quite how much of an addict he really is - and he felt it acceptable to give his 13 year old daughter drugs!

I’ve met Johnny a few times when he visited GOSH and he came across very differently to how he really is. He made a lot of families very happy with his visits and as far as I know he didn’t do them for publicity but to genuinely be kind (to give something back to the hospital he credited with saving his daughter’s life) but that persona has been replaced with the truth now. He is abusive. Amber is abusive. They both come out of this terribly.

CourtneyLurve · 09/07/2020 17:45

I've been listening and reading all the documentation. Everything. I've read the texts. The live feeds of the court. The lot. The depositions

Me too. And I think he's more than shown he's violent, particularly when under the influence. I believe her.

heartsonacake · 09/07/2020 17:45

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean ride be closed?

No. The ride was there first; the POTC films were based on the ride. At most they’d remove the Johnny Depp lookalike in it.

Pebblexox · 09/07/2020 17:45

In response to some PP I don't actually think he is coming off badly from all this information. The majority of it was public knowledge anyway. He's always had a troubled past, that's not brand new information. However I do not believe he abused Amber Heard and I hope he is found innocent. The fact that man who is usually extremely private in his life has gone this far into the public eye with something like this just tells me that it's extremely unlikely he's done anything wrong. He knows he has everything to lose, and yet he's still fighting.
