Johnny Depp. What if he loses the libel trial?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 09/07/2020 13:29

if he loses, as a domestic abuser, Will his canon of work be cancelled?

Will actors refuse to work with him? Will they condemn him?

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean ride be closed? (Actually there are a few Disney rides that are dodgy with a BLM lens, but that’s a different thread).

I’m willing to bet that nothing will be deleted and that he will continue to be offered work after a period of rehabilitation. Compare and contrast with the treatment JKR or any other woman who, for having a view about biology.

Anyone else care to make a prediction?

Obviously, this is entirely speculative and is not a commentary on the libel action or court proceedings

The ride definitely came before the films, I remember going on it in the 80s.

Hoggleludo · 09/07/2020 17:47

@Butterer

Ha. I've absolutely no idea now! Only wrote that like 3 mins ago. A bad autocorrect but no idea what it was meant to be!

Buzzfrightyears · 09/07/2020 17:49

There is no Captain Js in the POTC ride. Those films are properly amazing and are my childhood. Cancel culture is ridiculous! He did hospital visits not for publicity but to bring joy after Lily was treated at GOSH. He has always been known to be private so for him to go to court must be very important to him. He comes across as a good, kind man who’s made mistakes.

heartsonacake · 09/07/2020 17:51

There is no Captain Js in the POTC ride.

Buzzfrightyears Yes there is. I’ve been on the ride every year for the past six years and many years before that.

There wasn’t originally, but they created a character to look like Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp after the huge success of the films.

narrowboatgirl · 09/07/2020 17:53

She got done in her last relationship for domestic violence.
No, she didn’t. A male security guard called the police because he witnessed her arguing with her then-wife. The wife insists there was no violence, no one she’s ever been with previously has ever accused her of violence, and all her exes have defended her too.

He was with many people before this without even a hint
There have been rumours about him being a domestic abuser going back to the 90s. Winona Ryder said he abused her then retracted it. There were lots of rumours of DV during his famously wild relationship with Kate Moss (at the very least he smashed up hotel rooms around her), he exposed Vanessa Paradis to violence and made numerous red flag comments in interviews about how she was good at managing his “hillbilly rages” and could “talk me down off the ledge.”

He has a long, long history of violence and unstable abusive behaviour, has been arrested and sued for assault multiple times over the decades, and the testimony from the middle aged disabled woman who had both her arms dislocated is utterly sickening.

narrowboatgirl · 09/07/2020 17:56

I think they are both abusive btw. But it simply isn’t true to say that Amber Heard had been “done” for DV or that she was known to have abused previous partners.

CourtneyLurve · 09/07/2020 17:58

He's 57. When do you think he'll start owning his 'mistakes'?

AskDan · 09/07/2020 17:59

I used to idolise Johnny Depp as a teenager but a grown man who takes drugs, trashes houses, and writes their name in blood on a mirror is not a kind, good man. That is frightening and abusive behaviour.

I am not going to throw away my DVD collection, but I do feel sad that my teenage crush isn't the man I thought he was.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/07/2020 18:02

I think he's coming across quite well she's coming across as the abuser

DidoLamenting · 09/07/2020 18:03

They both come out of this very badly.

I think saving the photograph of him passed out drunk on the floor and producing it now is really off.

No one should be forced to stay in a relationship with an alcoholic or a drug addict. Heard had 2 choices- stick with him and hope rehab works or leave. Unlike many women in that situation she is independently wealthy , has a career and no children with Depp. There's nothing wrong in choosing the leave option. That photo is irrelevant as to whether he is a wife- beater and is being used only to humiliate him.

I also thought Amber, her sister and her solicitor turning up to court, all beautifully turned out in elegant black , sisterly holding hands was so contrived and fake. Why does she even need a solicitor? Witnesses are not entitled to legal representation and her solicitor has no locus to speak in court.

longwayoff · 09/07/2020 18:11

They both seem to be utterly deranged. Why on earth go through this performance from which nobody can emerge well? Only lawyers will benefit from this.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 18:11

How? Where are you getting that??? Did you see that he text a friend to say he should drown her, burn her and then fuck her just to check she was dead???

Gosh poor poor Johnny and his mistakes Hmm

This is NOT how domestic violence works.....neither is it true a victim should be purer than pure to be a true victim.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 18:15

If this is him coming across well then whatever your version of a man coming across badly is must be absolutely terrifying.

DidoLamenting · 09/07/2020 18:16

Depp made some strange and beautiful films, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Dead Man, Sleepy Hollow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat are my favourites and you can't really fault the first 2 POTC films. And don't forget the charming guest appearance in The Vicar of Dibley.

It's a personal pity for both of them it came to this but they do seem as bad as each other and no good for each other.

KOKOagainandagain · 09/07/2020 18:18

It seems like attention is being focused on the end of the relationship where AH has lost all perspective and is batshit crazy and JD is stonewalling (trying to deescalate) but ignoring how they got there. And ignoring what has happened since they split. Maybe that is relevant.

Before the relationship by his own testimony he was fucked up. He says she was 'heroic'.

Maybe she was always crazy and all her relationships have always been mutually abusive but she seems to be trying to move on from a clearly toxic relationship.

There seems to be a clear difference in her, not him, between the recorded discussions when they were still together (and she is in the fog?) compared to recordings when she had left (escaped?) especially to start with but she appears to still be vulnerable to being drawn back in. They are on YouTube.

The current court case was brought by him. He tried to bar her attending. He seems to be so focused on playing the victim that he can't see the damage he is doing to himself.

Bit of a straw man there. I said nothing about her having to be purer than pure. She could have left him at any time- no criticism whatsoever.

Why does she even need a solicitor? Witnesses are not entitled to legal representation and her solicitor has no locus to speak in court.

Two potential reasons spring to mine - one to show him his abuse hasn’t intimidated her and she will face the accusations in person, and the other is because she is an abuser and wanted to intimidate him whilst he was on the stand.

nauticant · 09/07/2020 18:24

The talk on this thread about JD being found innocent or guilty in the court case is doing my head in.

It's a libel trial, which is civil and not criminal. The issue in question before the court is whether The Sun can prove that what they printed about JD is true.

Goosefoot · 09/07/2020 18:27

I don't really understand people saying he was the abuser and presenting her as a victim. At the least it seems like what used to get called a codependent relationship and she seems every bit as bad as him, and possibly worse.

DidoLamenting · 09/07/2020 18:27

You only quoted me and oddly I'm not mind reader.

I don't use any of the silly MN acronyms and can't be bothered checking what it means but I assume HTH is intended to demonstrate some failure in comprehension on my part.

narrowboatgirl · 09/07/2020 18:31

Will her sister be able to testify? The testimony they’ve gone into so far included an allegation that he punched her.

AgnesNaismith · 09/07/2020 18:31

Well you know now Grin

Z0rr0 · 09/07/2020 18:32

Unsure if it’s a midlife crisis - he has said himself in this case that he started taking drugs at 14 to numb himself from his awful childhood.

I meant the relationship with her as a midlife crisis, ditching his longterm wife for someone much younger than himself.
