JK Rowling threatening legal action

TheLashKingOfScotland · 29/05/2020 16:52

A TRA and Canadian Green Party rep has made libellous comments about JK regarding her position on trans rights and her suitability to be trusted around children.
JK asked her to retract them or they would hear from JK's lawyers. Currently they are digging in. Seemingly unaware that JK has pursued legal cases based on Twitter comments before and that it isn't acceptable to make unfounded statements about people.
It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
It could have wider reaching consequences if certain sectors see they can't just make unfounded accusations any more.

I wish her well. The abuse she has received has been outrageous.

CaraDune · 29/05/2020 16:55

Good luck, JKR. Hope she takes them to the cleaners.

NotTerfNorCis · 29/05/2020 16:58

Good luck Jo.

Haven't got a share token, but ...

JKR is formidable and while I am sorry that she has been put in this position, I hope she does end up taking legal action. I have enjoyed some of her comments on Twitter - notably the 'borrow my lighter' tweet and 'the royalties leave my bank account when you destroy my books, and if it's a signed copy a tooth falls out' (or words to that effect).

Shedbuilder · 29/05/2020 17:06

Good on her. Shame you have to be worth millions before you can use the law.

Viviennemary · 29/05/2020 17:09

I don't like the way she uses her 'status' to muscle in on political issues regardless of whether I agree with her or not. As if her opinion matters more than anybody else's.

NotTerfNorCis · 29/05/2020 17:13

Eep Jo just pasted something gender critical by mistake.

Yy . It could set an interesting precedent.
And although I agree with a PP that it's frustrating that wealthy people can be protected in a way that ordinary people can't, it would have a drip down effect on what's acceptable and what isn't. Twitter might even end up having to review their frankly inadequate moderation when it comes to pile-ons, threats and misogyny.

I do t think that's fair, she's entitled to an opinion. I don't think she's "muscled in"

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/05/2020 17:16

She hasn't muscled in on gender critical issues. No idea about Scottish independence, as I wasn't following that in detail. She's certainly under siege on Twitter at the moment. She's a tough cookie, though, and she's not backing down.

Michelleoftheresistance · 29/05/2020 17:23

She hasn't 'muscled in', she's just not backed down tugging her forelock and muttering sorry, sorry, sorry as she goes.

This needs to be pushed by someone with the money and the freedom to not care, since as usual it's about the complete injustice of the political lobby using police and courts, doxing and threats to the last decimal place to control everyone else's speech to ridiculous lengths and tiny petty details, while demanding that they say whatever they want without repercussions even when it's actively unjust and against the law.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 29/05/2020 17:29

Litigious Expensivus!

TheLashKingOfScotland · 29/05/2020 17:33

I agree that she hasn't 'muscled' in. She posted support for Maya and the TRAs have consistently targeted her ever since. She is one of the few high-profile gc people with the financial resources to pursue a case.
A lot of the people that usually target her are anonymous, anime avator types. I think that may have lulled the others into a false sense of security.

Expressing an opinion isn’t muscling in! Confused if it is then everyone who has an opinion is muscling in.

lionheart · 29/05/2020 17:34

Good for her.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 29/05/2020 17:39

Oh no, a lady with an opinion. How very dare she?

BringbackLang · 29/05/2020 17:41

I hope JK she's. These fools think they can say and act with impunity and they will not experience any consequences.

Bojohair · 29/05/2020 17:43

I hope she takes them to the cleaners, there is free speech and there are libellous comments designed to smear reputations.

Milicentbystander72 · 29/05/2020 17:43

I love JKR.

I'm reading the Madness of Crowds by Douglas Murray at the moment.

I caught an interview with on TouTube where he says that he firmly believes that it will be the freelance writers and writers of wealth who will have to speak out on this ultimately as they don't fear the workplace backlash or being 'cancelled'.

Good for her. She's fierce and clever and has literally said nothing (in a normal world) wrong.

BringbackLang · 29/05/2020 17:44

Sues not she's Hmm

TheHoneyBadger · 29/05/2020 17:45

Good. We need women who do have the power and funds to take on tackling this crap. Most of the women and organisations they libel don't have the funds to take them on.

TrickyWords · 29/05/2020 17:47

The pile on this afternoon is horrific. I have never seen anything like it. She has been incredible during lockdown especially this week with the new book replies she has been doing for children.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/05/2020 17:48

I hope she does - the comment was allowed to stand by twitter and milder ones have been pulled and had people (women) canned for less.

Milicentbystander72 · 29/05/2020 17:50

The Telegragh article might be behind a paywall but you can read the comments and they're refreshing and fairly sympathetic to JKR.

NeutralJanet · 29/05/2020 17:50

I admire her for her stance on this issue and her failure to capitulate to bullies. She truly gives no fucks about what Twitter randoms think and a lot of other celebrities could take a leaf out of her book. I do understand it's not always easy to be brave enough to speak your mind and not back down if your livelihood depends on it, I would imagine Jo is set for life financially where others aren't in that position and can't risk losing their source of income.
