JK Rowling threatening legal action

A TRA and Canadian Green Party rep has made libellous comments about JK regarding her position on trans rights and her suitability to be trusted around children.
JK asked her to retract them or they would hear from JK's lawyers. Currently they are digging in. Seemingly unaware that JK has pursued legal cases based on Twitter comments before and that it isn't acceptable to make unfounded statements about people.
It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
It could have wider reaching consequences if certain sectors see they can't just make unfounded accusations any more.

Looks like JK is going to have a bit of time away from twitter - which is crap because she spends a lot of time on there wishing people happy birthday and complimenting kids drawings for her new book.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 29/05/2020 17:51

Ohh, just imagine the calibre of the lawyers Jo has!
Their hourly rate must be staggering.

LouHotel · 29/05/2020 17:52

JK for me symbolises I think lot of women's journeys in their thought process of TWAW. You start from a place of wanting to placate everyone and be nice but you realise it's never enough, TRA's don't want a conversation or a compromise on single sex exemptions, they want absolute authority and the more you pick at the scab the more you unveil the gaping hole in their argument.

FannyCann · 29/05/2020 17:53

Classic. She's just had an epic copy and paste fail.

I'm not a fan of JK's writing & know little about her opinions, but I do think she's entitled to voice an honest opinion in the face of woke chicanery, smoke & mirrors. The abuse is vile.

Beamur · 29/05/2020 17:55

Good for her.
I'd be rooting for her. She's been very tactful, measured and careful in her comments. She's perfectly entitled to her opinions and I admire very much that she's stood fast in the face of huge pressure to conform, recant and apologise.

Kantastic · 29/05/2020 18:11

The abuse she's getting is awful but I hope she is able to see the funny side. I've copied the below from a long thread hurling vitriol at her. I was so tickled by the advice for JKR to be more like its author that I had to share.

or hell be me. i'm cute, powerful, and in the 1 (one) fan fiction i've written i've successfully managed to get more diversity in the 10,000 words it comprises than you did in an entire series of childrens' novels. it is literally the easiest thing to be a decent person

Kantastic · 29/05/2020 18:13

And isn't it interesting that they are accusing her of "bigotry" for accidentally copy/pasting an entirely accurate sentence fragment?

NotTerfNorCis · 29/05/2020 18:14

Cute and powerful, like a Pokemon.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 29/05/2020 18:19

Wtf would JKR want to be someone who’d written one 10k word piece of fanfic? 😂

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 29/05/2020 18:19

I love JK. Hope she takes them to the cleaners.

Helmetbymidnight · 29/05/2020 18:20

As if her opinion matters more than anybody else's.

But the alternative is that she doesn't have an opinion, no? She has an opinion like anyone else. Why should she have to keep quiet?

Yeah, the nutters are all coming at her, blimey.

Lamahaha · 29/05/2020 18:21

I've just been reading her twitter messages to children about their pictures. She is not only a wonderful GC ally, she is simply adorable!

RoyalCorgi · 29/05/2020 18:24

She is wonderful. I do hope she absolutely takes this Spurling person to the cleaners and forces an apology out of them and a donation to the Vancouver Rape Centre. The great thing about Rowling is that she can afford the best lawyers money can buy, and she can afford to continue hiring them long after anyone else would have had to give up.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/05/2020 18:24

I can't like or retweet her - twitter is being a pig just now. I think her taking time to do this is just brilliant for her fans.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/05/2020 18:26

Yay - Fabulous Fred has popped up to support JK on twitter (do we never call her Johanne - seems off to call her JK?)

TheLashKingOfScotland · 29/05/2020 18:28

She has been getting abuse for a long time. Luckily, she seems to have strength of character as well as almost unlimited funds. Both of which make her a difficult person to bully and also fairly unique. Most people do need to worry about keeping their jobs or finding work, but JK doesn't.

I bloody love JKR and her stance on this. The shame on society that you have to be rich and untouchable to be able to fight these Twitter bullies. Keep going JK!

DidoLamenting · 29/05/2020 18:32

No idea about Scottish independence, as I wasn't following that in detail

She was opposed to it and contributed a lot to Better Together. JKR and King Creosote were possibly the only 2 in the Scottish arts luvvies circle who supported "No". She was perfectly entitled to make her position clear and she lives in Scotland unlike several of the "artists for independence"

Sexnotgender · 29/05/2020 18:34

I hope she takes them to the cleaners.

That is one of the piss-funniest things I've seen on here in ages (and I say that as someone who writes fanfiction). What a plonker!
Dances · 29/05/2020 18:36

Talk about Thought Crime! They are asking her to justify why she was copying the words re T. Wolf.

On the same threads I have read someone claiming that referencing George Orwell is a clear sign of Terfdom.

WTF?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/05/2020 18:38

Not the sharpest knives in the cutlery drawer.

Dances · 29/05/2020 18:40

Yes she got a lot of shit for being a vocal No re indyref. Those were highly toxic times but not as bad as this shit when you can be accused of being a paedo for not believing in 'gender identity'

TheHoneyBadger · 29/05/2020 18:47

Grin

That's the whole of our schools year 8 who are studying Animal Farm this term then.

Referencing critical thinkers is a sign of terfdom?! Or is that, tellingly, that being familiar with critical thinking and warnings against tyranny is closely associated with seeing right through trans-facist-ideology. You couldn't make this shit up. They are literally the best example of 'give them enough rope' ever!
