I was called a uterus haver, in a what'sapp chat, aimed at promoting female health,in a family chat...
The person who sent it is very woke, does lots for the community, lgbt and sporting.
I didn't reply as did no one else.
I said to my partner that it is an attempt at normalising that language, the one that can't say woman...

It can be said in the same way as 'if you have eyes, get an eye test'

But no one would say "if you have eyes". Ridiculous. Most people have eyes and get eye tests. The occasional person without eyes gives the optician a miss.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2019 23:21

Honestly, call them on it.

They are making an assumption about your identity that you have a uterus. And they are being insensitive that you might no longer have one. Or have one thats faulty.

If they are so woke, then they should trip over themselves to apologise to you for causing offence. Or just shut the fuck up.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 11/05/2019 23:22

I understand that you could get a generic message to say, "Get your eyes checked".But this is not the same, it's the same and worse than being called a pregnant person. There is a huge scandal of women dying because of cervical check.. I'm just upset that a TRA has used this to include some and exclude women. There aren't any men dying because of what's happened Ireland because of this.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2019 23:23

I can imagine the type of thing, throwing a few womans into y iui or reply will get your message across and he'll be forced to look like a knob or accept it. No body else will bat an eyelid as it's just common sense.

Yes, that's perfect. Just keep saying "women".

littlbrowndog · 11/05/2019 23:23

Well he’s in your family. So tell him this ?

Why have you not. ?

OP posts:
floraloctopus · 11/05/2019 23:25

The occasional person without eyes gives the optician a miss.

My blind grandfather used to get a talking paper recorded by a neighbour, they read all the adverts too including one for an optician, he thought that was hilarious

Endofthedays · 11/05/2019 23:29

DD signed up for a surgery recently and the sign up form asked that people with cervixes check a box if they have not had a smear test.

She had no idea what cervixes meant. I doubt she was the only one, and many women will end up not getting checked as a result.

They should just say women.

andyoldlabour · 11/05/2019 23:31

Whoever said this to the OP is a complete POS IMHO.
Sorry OP that you had to hear this from such scum.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 11/05/2019 23:33

little And .... what would happen
I'm sure you've heard of GC womens life's and careers being ruined because of this.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 11/05/2019 23:38

Endofthedays that's why I wanted to reply" say women, or else my partner will go to the doctor and
ask for a smear. " I have two kids now, I didn't know what a cervix was before I had them. Yes I know that sounds stupid, but I didn't. How many other women don't know.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 11/05/2019 23:39

They should just say women.

But that is actually inaccurate as some women do not have a cervix and a trans man might.

I find it depressing that a woman doesn't know what a cervix is TBH.

It's not really possible to be inclusive with language when the only people who have a cervix are women. As a pp said not everyone knows the correct name for parts of their anatomies. I'd just reply the word woman will do just fine. IMO using cervix havers and uterus havers just muddles language........... wait.... is that what the endgame is?
Maybe ask about prostrate havers, not relevant to your very specific question but maybe a way of highlighting the ridiculousness of using cervix/uterus havers

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 11/05/2019 23:50

Soup unfortunately growing up in Catholic Ireland, when parents didn't talk about periods, let alone a cervix, it's possible a lot of women don't know, or didn't untill they were pregnant. And yes Absolute I feel that is the end game, to eradicate the word woman.

7Days · 11/05/2019 23:50

Its sickening really OP, it's an appropriation of other peoples' suffering.
It's the same tactic they used on the repeal the 8th campaign.

Anyway, reply nice as pie, scatter the word woman liberally through your response. Let the wokester be the one to insist on the changed language and show their tactic up in front of the family. Or let them roll over and accept your response, the rest of the family won't notice anything odd about your response

FagashJackie · 12/05/2019 00:03

Vicky Phelan is great. I'm overdue a smear test and will book one now.

Cancer and women's bodies is a whole area of debate. I think we get a lot of testing as if there is something inherently wrong with us, or that we will accept being tested when men refuse the prostrate test. Our screening is invasive, smear or mammogram.

I'll get a smear though now. i hope to god that I've had a uterus up there the whole bloody time. As a uterus haver.

MyCatHogsTheBed · 12/05/2019 00:03

I really don't think there is anything wrong with that message. If it had gone to my family not that we have a whatsapp group two of the women in the group have no need for a smear test.

2BthatUnnoticed · 12/05/2019 00:08

OP I’m confused.

Why haven’t you “replied all” saying UH is offensive to you, and please don’t use it?

It is not for others (who are not the target of the message) to say it’s not offensive, blah blah.

Honestly OP, what are you afraid of? For all we know the poor lad thinks “woman” is offensive or summat. Put him straight.

Endofthedays · 12/05/2019 00:11

Women who don’t have a cervix will know what a cervix is, and know a smear is not applicable to them.

Many women who do have a cervix won’t know what one is due to either language barriers or youth.

When I had a scan, the hcp didn’t use any anatomical terms like femur, spine, pelvis etc. It was all leg bone, back bone etc because they know many women will not understand the terms.

But we expect everyone to understand cervix? It just isn’t realistic

MyCatHogsTheBed · 12/05/2019 08:05

@2BthatUnnoticed they didn't say Uterus haverers, despite the OP. They talked about those who have a cervix because they were talking about smear tests, and those things are vital for a smear test.

I'm another who thinks most women who don't have any learning difficulties and speak native English should darn well know what a cervix is and whether they have one or not. In a family what's app I'm sure the sender would know if the people in it could be expected to understand the word cervix.

MyCatHogsTheBed · 12/05/2019 08:07

I seem to always end up with a student observing or doing a smear test on me when I go (with my consent, in case that statement worries anybody). The supervising nurse talks about my cervix to me and to the student. The most disturbing thing I learned is when one was describing it as looking like a dog's nose

Windygate · 12/05/2019 09:04

OP if the post had been 'all those with a prostate need to get it checked' would you have gone to your doctor to request a prostate check? I'm not happy with 'uterus hover' but 'those with a cervix' is pretty accurate.
The Irish cervical smear scandal is terrible and was completely avoidable. I doubt Ireland will be the only country guilty of shoddy women's health services.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2019 09:12

they didn't say Uterus haverers, despite the OP. They talked about those who have a cervix because they were talking about smear tests, and those things are vital for a smear test.

I can't work out what was or wasn't said. I guess "uterus havers" was simply a far more attention seeking title.

Hoppinggreen · 12/05/2019 09:15

Are we allowed to call Pre (non) OP Transwomen “ penis havers “ then ?
Don’t imagine that would go down well
