I was called a uterus haver, in a what'sapp chat, aimed at promoting female health,in a family chat...
The person who sent it is very woke, does lots for the community, lgbt and sporting.
I didn't reply as did no one else.
I said to my partner that it is an attempt at normalising that language, the one that can't say woman...

OP posts:

If you say 'people with cervices need to have regular smear tests' that is opaque and not all women will understand.
They didn't say that though did they?

The OP said it was if you have a cervix - so what is wrong with that?

It's certainly not as offensive as saying "uterus haver" which is what the title says (presumably because it's more inflammatory).

CaptSkippy · 12/05/2019 11:11

It's very dehumanising language toward women. Like we are not female human beings, but walking incubators. This is how you end up with Handmaid's Tale scenarios.

Outofinspiration · 12/05/2019 11:13

DD was not old enough to be independently registering for a surgery, but she was old enough to be considered capable of independently filling in her own health questionnaire by the doctor.

So old enough to know that she has a cervix and where it is then? It's your responsibility as her mum to ensure she knows that you know? You seem to just think it's inevitable that she wouldn't know this?

I roll my eyes at the 'my 3 year old calls it her vulva' brigade (no 3 year old says vulva), but I do think that it's parents responsibility to ensure that their children have anatomical awareness at an appropriate age.

Outofinspiration · 12/05/2019 11:13

I don't understand why the OP said she was called a 'uterus haver' when she wasn't? Confused

MockerstheFeManist · 12/05/2019 11:38

And idiot is an idiot. Idiocy has not sex or gender.

Obviously. However, this idiot was a "her" and not a "penis haver"

OrchidInTheSun · 12/05/2019 11:54

Decomposing. Perhaps you should read the link that DuMondeB posted before you so confidently assume women know they have a cervix.

You are prioritising woke language over women's health. Women are dying because of people like you.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2019 11:55

As an aside, the cervical cancer jab leaflet has a handy little diagram showing where the cervix is. Any girl over 13 should know.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2019 11:55

Any girl who has had/is having the jab that is.

Absolutely this. Read it.

Thanks to Paula.

OrchidInTheSun

I'm not confidently assuming that women know they have a cervix (though women should know about their anatomy).

I am also not promoting woke language.

I don't see what is woke in not particularly having a problem with someone saying "if you have a cervix then have a smear test". This isn't a health campaign or an hcp saying it. It's a family member to other family members. I don't see any difference to them saying if you have a prostate get a PSA check

And my real point is that saying "if you have a cervix..." is most definitely not the same as calling someone a uterus haver, which the OP appears to have made up for some reason.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:08

For all the fucking reasons people have posted, read the FPFW piece and try to get your head around why this female erasure is not a good thing. This isn't AIBU, it's not just about the OP. It's a feminist issue.

DecomposingComposers · 12/05/2019 12:10

I have read it.

It still is not the same as calling someone a uterus haver!!

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:11

Stop derailing the thread. It isn't AIBU. She said it because she didn't want to out herself but wanted to have the discussion. It's exactly the same issue.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:13

This. For the hard of thinking.

barryfromclareisfit · 12/05/2019 12:15

How dare they make reference to your body at all? That is so rude.

DecomposingComposers · 12/05/2019 12:21

I'm not the only person saying this and actually it's a public forum so I am allowed to state my opinion.

And no, it is not the same as calling someone a uterus haver. I would wonder what the OPs motivation was in making up such a blatant lie.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:30

She's explained why she said that. It isn't "a blatant lie". It's the same issue.

DecomposingComposers · 12/05/2019 12:35

She's explained that she didn't want to out herself. And then proceeded to post what was actually said, so clearly not that bothered about outing herself then.

Instead she decided to post a particularly inflammatory status that she knew would get a certain response. I am wondering why?

And calling someone a uterus haver is not the same as saying if you have a cervix.

The first is a deliberate choice to avoid using female or woman. The second could be but could be a way of promoting the need to have a smear test only to the women who need them.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:40

Why are you still derailing this thread? I'm "wondering about your motivations" in continuing to do so. It's obnoxious.

There are women who need to have a smear test even though they may think they've had their cervix removed. And it's also a way to monitor other changes.

Women and trans men, would be the truly "inclusive" way to put it. But of course those trans people without a cervix wouldn't be happy,

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:43

"People with a cervix" and "uterus haver" is the same bullshit woke language that you claim you're not advocating, and said do exactly the same reason. There's no reason to pick on the OP.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:43

*said for

DecomposingComposers · 12/05/2019 12:47

Why are you still derailing this thread?
Why are you continuing to derail by continuing to question my comments?

If you don't like what I say just ignore them. You keep quoting me and then asking questions and then complain when I answer. That's quite odd, frankly.

If you don't want me to answer then stop asking me questions.

This wasn't posted as part of a health campaign, so I wouldn't expect the same level of awareness or knowledge.

It was a family member posting a reminder - a bit invasive really, like most of the tripe posted on facebook reminding you to do this, that or the other, because I prefer to get my health education from hcps, not some random meme on facebook but I just swipe past. It's nothing something that I would cause a family rift over.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 12/05/2019 12:49

The important thing about cervical screening is that women go for it. Using terms that are unfamiliar to many women will not achieve this. The language used must meet people where they are, not in some ideal place where everyone knows their anatomy.

Ereshkigal · 12/05/2019 12:50

I've said my piece. It's tedious when people make a thread about them.
