...and defends the Mermaids jelly baby scale. I'm so pissed off at people like this who have apparently done zero research and yet are happy to put their woke two cents in whilst also casually using misogynistic slurs. How can they not see how utterly sexist it all is? How is calling other women by a derogatory slur at all productive? How is using gender stereotypes in any way helpful? How about if we used them for race? Where would you fit on the race scale? Do you like eating watermelon and ribs or do you have a good sense of rhythm? Then you're more at the black end of the scale. No no no no no. The stereotypes are the problem, we don't need to work with the stereotypes we've got and be told to pick a place on the scale, we need to escape them altogether. FFS.

sanctimonious radio 4 comedy

Grin

Sanctimonious does sum up a lot of BBC comedy, they tend to focus on moralising rather than humour. They aren't fun to listen to.

The Now Show is dreadful. It is so so pleased with itself.

John Finnemore, on the other hand, is one of my comedy heroes.

The Now Show is dreadful

yes, this ^

John Finnemore occassionally guests on the Now Show, along with some other good comedians.
I liked Mitch Benn, though, better than any of his replacements.

Gender is not a fucking sliding scale!! It just doesnt exist! It's a construct... people may be socialised in different ways and sometimes that divides up along sex dividers BUT most people are a mixture of characteristics that you could define as traditionally associated with men or women... ist not a bloody scale!! You can simultaneously love barbies and gi Joe's!! You cant be less or more feminine than someone else ITS A CONSTRUCT!!!
Fuck sake. And you might like to wear a floaty pink dress out dancing one day and then Jean's and a giant jumper to do some gardening the next... does that make you none binary??!

Sorry stuff like this just grinds my gears.
It is misogynistic... 'Woman' isnt a bunch of likes and dislikes, attitudes and poses... we are actual complicated, real human beings who just happen to have vaginas!

Punt and Dennis were teenage heroes of mine. i still love them a lot, particularly steve punt

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I've just found this article in Pink News in which Robert Webb calls himself "a gender critical feminist". He made the announcement after Janice Turner was attacked for an article she wrote in the Sunday Times criticising Mermaids and their tactics.

He wrote: "This won't make me popular in certain quarters, but f--- it, I'm with Janice and I don't say it often enough."

He added that pro-trans men "can shove their influence up their arses... I'll influence them under the table... Sorry I've been such a coward this year,"

And finished with, "telling girls and boys they are in the wrong body because they don't conform to gender stereotypes is certainly a step back into the dark."

He's just gone up quite drastically in my estimation. Good on you, Robert! Flowers

What’s he said this year, though? It is now April Hmm

nettie434 · 07/04/2019 09:20

I seem to remember he got a huge backlash for that stance, to the extent of deleting the tweet. One of the rare examples along with Glinner where a full pile on from transgender activists and allies was directed at a man. He had specifically emphasised his concern were about children, not transgender adults, but he got the full treatment
