Josie Long refers to women as 'terfs'

...and defends the Mermaids jelly baby scale. I'm so pissed off at people like this who have apparently done zero research and yet are happy to put their woke two cents in whilst also casually using misogynistic slurs. How can they not see how utterly sexist it all is? How is calling other women by a derogatory slur at all productive? How is using gender stereotypes in any way helpful? How about if we used them for race? Where would you fit on the race scale? Do you like eating watermelon and ribs or do you have a good sense of rhythm? Then you're more at the black end of the scale. No no no no no. The stereotypes are the problem, we don't need to work with the stereotypes we've got and be told to pick a place on the scale, we need to escape them altogether. FFS.

I also get irritated hearing people declare their entitlement to be "intolerant to intolerance".

Just get your arguments sorted out and if you want to take issue, then point out why the other side are wrong. Doing this morality thing is bringing back shit we've been spending centuries moving away from.

hipsterfun · 18/03/2019 12:43

I’ve been pondering recently that at some point in the last 15 years, there’s been a style change from making statements about things, to prefacing with ‘I believe...’. Almost as if belief, especially when ‘passionate’, has a moral virtue lacking in dry old reason.

TheMagicFupa · 18/03/2019 14:01

Oh no, has David Mitchell swallowed the party line too? I thought he was one of us. Robert Webb has been openly GC in his autobiography (although he was talking about the toxic nature of gender rather than trans issues specifically).

Mind you, I would be seriously disappointed if Victoria Coren-Mitchell wasn't gender critical. She seems extremely intelligent and utterly fearless, the sort of woman you look at and think, "With her on our side, we cannot lose."

EcclesThePeacock · 18/03/2019 14:09

Afaik Mitchell is one of the many silent.

MilkGoatee · 18/03/2019 14:23

I realise Ben Elton wrote Upstart Crow, but I distinctly remember an "ooo, aaahh" moment in the last series - or maybe it was the Christmas episode.

Horsewithnointerestinsport · 18/03/2019 14:38

Disappointing from Josie, thank heavens I don’t find her funny.

Yes, me too. Tho' I don't want to perpetuate that tired old cliche that women can't be funny.

I think that new show where's the f in news can be very funny but Josie not so much.

It would be a fascinating to have trans ideology as a subject on The Unbelievable Truth.

samsamsamsamsamsam · 18/03/2019 15:39

I cant find the tweet anymore - perhaps she has deleted it?

samsamsamsamsamsam · 18/03/2019 15:41

oh no found it

Heehee, I can't imagine how that would work! Grin Sadly I don't think the BBC would ever dare do something like that!

Slight tangent, but it's possible that the great Jeremy Hardy (RIP) was gender critical, which I wouldn't necessarily expect. On one of his last appearances on ISIHAC, after one of his notorious attempts at singing, he said, "But you have to clap, because I identify as a singer." To great laughter from the audience. Smile

cattycattycat · 18/03/2019 16:34

Oh this is so depressing as I do like her comedy. Thankfully I don't have to agree with everything she says.

hipsterfun · 18/03/2019 19:06

Mitchell is one of the many silent.

Which is his right, of course.

But it’s notable that he’s somewhat selective in applying his trademark no-nonsense scoffery.

Refiling under ‘complacent’ for the time being.

Doobigetta · 18/03/2019 19:41

Not at all surprised about Long, I’ve always thought she was insufferably smug and not funny.

LassOfFyvie · 18/03/2019 20:21

Josie Long simply proves that there is truth in cliches.

Oh and look Josie and Jonny are having a baby-how utterly tedious.

I am going to see Josie Long and Grace Petrie this week

Grace Petrie is insufferable too.

Cliques · 18/03/2019 20:39

I went to see Nish Kumar recently and he did a whole segment about how monstrous Ricky Gervais was for attacking trans people, and how appalling it was to be scared of them since there are only about 12 transsexuals in the UK anyway.

I was so disappointed. I’m a huge comedy fan. First disappointment was that up until then, Nish had been a huge fan of Gervais’s (I don’t like Gervais), second that Nish (who I adore) clearly hasn’t listened to any of the concerns at all and thinks that trans still just means old-style transsexuals. The audience was pretty quiet for that rant compared to the rest of it.

Richard Herring has stated he thinks trans women are women but also that he believes other people don’t have to agree with him (which is something).

I was going to book tickets to go and see Josie Long this year. I like her gentle style of comedy, but I’m not going to now. It’s a shame. I know she won’t care, but it hurts me that people don’t give a shit about what it means to give away my bodily autonomy.

I wish more critical thinking was applied. I know there was a time when I thought it was all about transsexuals, and I couldn’t see what the issue was, so I know minds can change. I’m a leftie, comedy-loving, woman, who believes everyone is perfectly equal, but that doesn’t really matter anymore. I’m just a TERF because I can’t make it possible for anyone to change sex.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 18/03/2019 20:42

I'm sure I can't be the first one to compare Josie Long to this character: I tried to like her before, in a 'I'm left-wing therefore this is what I'm supposed to like' kind of way, but thought it was all a bit wet. At least all this TRA shite has got me listening to my own instincts a bit more, I suppose...

Deliriumoftheendless · 18/03/2019 20:43

When has Richard Herring said that? I’m a bit surprised.

Cliques · 18/03/2019 20:49

He tweeted it last year sometime. I was surprised too.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 18/03/2019 20:49

Nish Kumar strikes me as the kind of person who has whatever opinions are going to make him most money from his target audience, so even though he can be quite funny, I always find his humour going for obvious easy targets. I thought the Mash Report got a bit pantomime - sexists Boooo!, Trump - Hisssss! I back Ricky!

The mash report was great on Facebook but did not translate well to TV. it was utter shite.

I didn't know it was on Facebook before.

LOL.

I’ve only popped up on here to say I loathe Brigstocke; he has ALWAYS come across as the guy at uni who’s all like “hey girls I’m a feminist and a nice guy” who’d hang onto you just that bit too long in a hug.

IIRC he also cheated on his wife and left her and his young family for the odious Hayley Tamaddon.

Good to know he’s fond of kool aid though, I can legit hate on him more. As you were, all.
