...and defends the Mermaids jelly baby scale. I'm so pissed off at people like this who have apparently done zero research and yet are happy to put their woke two cents in whilst also casually using misogynistic slurs. How can they not see how utterly sexist it all is? How is calling other women by a derogatory slur at all productive? How is using gender stereotypes in any way helpful? How about if we used them for race? Where would you fit on the race scale? Do you like eating watermelon and ribs or do you have a good sense of rhythm? Then you're more at the black end of the scale. No no no no no. The stereotypes are the problem, we don't need to work with the stereotypes we've got and be told to pick a place on the scale, we need to escape them altogether. FFS.

I should listen to more John Finnemore. Just had a pleasant few minutes scanning his twitter.

Frankie Boyle is deeply unpleasant and another virtue- signalling lefty.

We don’t disagree there. Katie Price has my full respect for her dignified response to Boyle.

LizzieSiddal · 20/03/2019 06:33

How come she’s employed by the BBC yet allowed to shout at people and tell them to fuck off on Twitter.

As an aside to nothing in particular I always switch her programme off in R4. I cannot stand her simpering voice.

LizzieSiddal · 20/03/2019 06:34

"The ONLY version of feminism that feels dogmatic and unnatural is how strictly transphobes police what women are supposed to be."

It's always nice when it's so obvious that someone doesn't have a fucking clue about what they're talking about.

ChattyLion · 20/03/2019 07:38

Wow... that quote from Josie Long.... Shock
What a tragic bootlicking she is doing.

Why do handmaidens feel the need? Are they seeking some kind of personal career, social, financial, sexual advantage over other women? Scared not to completely capitulate to a male agenda? Internalised misogyny? Are they extremely thick and privileged and don’t understand what they are posturing about is deeply political and that these issues have real meaning in other people’s lives?

Are they playing some kind of fucked up woke bingo on social media and feeling in need of more woke points and attention? Building up their social media profile and follow numbers by promoting glittery shit? Building up their social media profile and follows by trying to bait feminists, free speechers, and (well, anyone of rational thought) by being ‘controversial’?
Are they ‘Keeping themselves relevant’?
Maybe flat out trolling? I.e. not believing a word of it but taking the piss out of vacuous privilege of the woke by pretending to be vacuous and privileged?

Do handmaidens ever think about how free they would feel if they or someone they disagreed with ever wanted to post on Twitter as out-and-proudly saying the opposite ie giving the gender critical point of view?

Handmaidens know that they would get an absolute world of shit, and threats, and abuse, right? How do the handmaidens really feel about that, if they stop and think about that?

Do they really truly, though, deep down, support a movement that for it’s own greater political advantage hurries kids and young people away from talking therapies into taking permanently-altering medicine, hormones and health and rushing them down the track to surgery (whether that’s genital cosmetic surgery or invasive egg collection and expensive annual storage fees, or double mastectomy) ? What about the risks to short term and long term health?

What about the majority of these young people who will desist and are left to deal with the physical and emotional consequences?

I mean.... WTF?!

I feel the same about factphobic men spouting self-serving nonnsense but I can clearly see the advantage for them in this posturing. I just don’t get why women would do it.

The gain in attention, social reward, or gratifying power over other women that they might feel they want is surely such an obviously illusory win, because it’s all on men’s terms? They’re actively propping up a harmful, sexist status quo... while they claim to be feminists who don’t like sexism?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/03/2019 07:53

Some women really don’t like women though. We’ve all met them - love to be surrounded by the attention of men but will hiss and spit at other women.

borntobequiet · 20/03/2019 08:29

Fekko - I think that many (not all) of the women fairly high up in the Conservative party are like this. In other parties too, but not to the same extent.

ChattyLion · 20/03/2019 08:36

Maybe it’s about pulling the ladder up behind you? BTW noticed this in various industries too.
Combination of career advancement plus early trauma creating narcissistic persona. Oddly the narcissism helps with career advancement because no fucks are given and others are smeared and trampled on. Interesting!

A bit fucking rich though- like in the case of Josie Long- to want to colonise feminism as your own, when you views are massively sexist.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/03/2019 08:37

Out if interest - what sex is her baby? Has she ‘gendered’ the poor mite?

BertrandRussell · 20/03/2019 08:43

The baby is a girl- we “chatted” about breastfeeding when she was a newborn.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/03/2019 08:44

Girl? How very dare you.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 20/03/2019 08:46

Josie works in a very male dominated field, she's probably survived in her career by appeasing men - male comedians can be massive narcissists and a big factor for them going into comedy is trying to pull women. Little surprise then that she sides with the group who say they are most oppressed whilst simultaneously their most vocal component are mainly white, middle-class men (who claim to be women). Perhaps she thinks she's superior to other women because she's made a career in her field and so doesn't have to take other women's concerns seriously. It is surprising though, with all her hatred of the Tories which often forms part of her stand-up, that she's so unquestioningly supportive of the Tory plan to reform the GRA. Why does this get a free pass where everything else would be subject to her scrutiny?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/03/2019 08:57

I’ve always worked in ‘male’ industries. I’ve never been a ‘familiar’ for gods sake.

Women I have come across who do act like this have generally been not very good at their jobs.

hipsterfun · 20/03/2019 09:32

Why do handmaidens feel the need?

I’ve got a typology of handmaidens but it wouldn’t get past FWR peer review i.e. there isn’t a plate large enough for the ensuing arse-handing Grin

Dexra · 20/03/2019 09:36

I suspect with Josie long, it's a combination of a big part of her identity narrative being 'I am leftwing!' along with a complete lack of intellectual curiosity.
I remember reading Germaine Greer's comments on trans women and feeling a bit uncomfortable, but, like most on here I suspect, I respected her enough to read up and of course the whole trans ideology disintegrates completely when subjected to any scrutiny. I think she just hasn't got the brain to want to challenge parts of her ideology that she's grown to be comfortable with - she likes the Labour message of looking after the vulnerable rather than the class analysis, but isn't even prepared to look at who the vulnerable are, or question whether "looking after" really means lying to, prescribing drugs, surgery etc.

AstonishedFemalePersonator · 20/03/2019 09:43

Why do handmaidens feel the need?

It is easier and important to be "inclusive" than to think. Virtue-signalling precludes critical thinking.

I makes me laugh and despair in equal measure how people decry the "post-truth" culture but will slurp the kook-aid regarding lady brains.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 20/03/2019 09:47

I agree. I don't think that many put much, if any thought into what they are saying.

If twaw and tmam, would everyone be happy for transmen to be placed in a male prison? Would Josie campaign for that?

AstonishedFemalePersonator · 20/03/2019 09:52

Hah! Can you imagine? There aren't enough mods in the world to handle the number of complaints MNHQ would get. Plus, you would get a MN ban-for-life.

ChattyLion · 20/03/2019 09:53

Me too working most of the time in male dominated work places/industries. I find it so much more draining.

And I try hard not to collaborate and I try to build in non sexist attitudes, policies, practice wherever I can which takes more effort and time and attracts much more negative attention than not doing so. Or than actively pulling up the ladder behind me to shut out other women would do.

Also why I ended up working in a place that lets (I think- I am not a doctor) AGP TWs into the women’s work toilets.. because the male domination culture is so absolute it’s not even a question why this might not be OK. Come right on into the Ladies, men! Nobody minds.. Hmm

Probably why handmaidens wind me up because they are such self-harming sell outs and they actually harm others day to day life and others prospects for their own advantage.

They’re not as bad as than the sexist arseholes who first made them think that way though. That’s all on the sexist arseholes..

deydododatdodontdeydo · 20/03/2019 11:38

Don't know much about Grace Petrie, but I always skip her when she's on the Now Show, her songs are teeth gratingly awful.
They replaced the very funny Mitch Benn with a succession of mostly women comedy singers, all of which sound very similar and none of which are funny.
Great for diversity, but not so great for comedy.

I haven't listened to the Now Show for at least 2 /3 years now. I think I stopped being left wing around 10 years ago but was still clinging on to The Guardian and sanctimonious radio 4 comedy. It's actually a relief now to be done with the lot of them.

justasking111 · 20/03/2019 13:22

Josie is a Doctor Who fan since childhood, well that is a real feminist bastion Grin

JugzyMalone · 20/03/2019 13:59

Disappointed but not surprised.

@MrsBertBibby why do you think John finnemore is GC? I love him and he MUST be.

Also disappointed by silence from coren-Mitchells but they don't have to speak publicly I guess. There's no way RW hasn't discussed it with them.

Just described me, lass. (That sounds a bit Yorkshire, non?)

Those bloody awful songs by Mitch Benn...
