...and defends the Mermaids jelly baby scale. I'm so pissed off at people like this who have apparently done zero research and yet are happy to put their woke two cents in whilst also casually using misogynistic slurs. How can they not see how utterly sexist it all is? How is calling other women by a derogatory slur at all productive? How is using gender stereotypes in any way helpful? How about if we used them for race? Where would you fit on the race scale? Do you like eating watermelon and ribs or do you have a good sense of rhythm? Then you're more at the black end of the scale. No no no no no. The stereotypes are the problem, we don't need to work with the stereotypes we've got and be told to pick a place on the scale, we need to escape them altogether. FFS.

Brigstocke's seriesThe Brig Society, which began in 2013, was described by theDaily Telegraphas "imbecilic", "patronising", "smug" and "self righteous" and the product of “noxious lefty bias.”

^ From his wiki page. Giles Wembley-Hogg goes forth was even worse.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/03/2019 22:43

I’m not sorry he was standing behind me as I was telling someone how irritating and smug I thought he was on the radio. Indeed feel guilty for a while but I feel much better now (and in RL he has a smuggery face too).

LassOfFyvie · 18/03/2019 22:44

anyone who says anything rude about Owen Jones... can't be all bad

hipsterfun · 18/03/2019 22:51

IIRC he also cheated on his wife and left her and his young family for the odious Hayley Tamaddon.

I wasn’t going to bring that up but since you mention it... Classy. Really classy, Marcus.

WokerThanWoke · 18/03/2019 22:52

And then got cross with the Mail for running the story.

beagadorsrock · 18/03/2019 22:59

Since we're mentioning all the comedians , here's Matt Lucas being sympathetic. Probably enough to sign a letter.

I mean, to the ENBYS. But not entirely lefty-goodie

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 18/03/2019 23:28

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise, I'm so glad I'm not the only one disappointed by John Oliver. He's so bloody sanctimonious in his rightness. The episode where he completely dismissed the worries of girls and women over the ACLU (title 9?) Court case on bathroom access was the last time I bothered watching.

OrchidInTheSun · 18/03/2019 23:33

I didn't know all that about Brigstocke so I googled. He's getting married to Rachel Parris Sad (because I like her)

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 18/03/2019 23:37

MotherForkinShirtBalls When I first saw that I went along with it through the kind of 'John Oliver is someone I agree with on most things so he must also be right on this' kind of mentality. This was before I started seeing all the aggressive stuff on social media and peaked. I'm now just really annoyed by comedians like him, because they have a lot of responsibility yet what they present is so one-sided.

While this lot may not all have been born into mega-privilege, neither does it seem likely they’ve suffered a great deal of vulnerability as a result of violence, abuse, poverty etc. so there’s a superficiality to their positions on social issues; this and the top-university confidence in being clever and right all the time probably accounts for the sanctimony.

hipsterfun · 19/03/2019 01:40

And imo John Oliver is on a Ben Elton trajectory.

Gone2far · 19/03/2019 06:32

Daily Mash is brilliant on fb. And bloody awful on TV. Almost as though it's written by utterly different teams.
I've only ever seen Nish Kumar on Question Time, where he just came across as an archetypal smug left wing comedian.

ChattyLion · 19/03/2019 07:14

How strange for a new mother to be so adamant about all this utter bollocks. At a time in your life when the reality of your female reproductive body is so all-consuming.

Long clearly knows who is male and who is female and what sexism is. Apparently she worries about how sexism might affect her career after she’s had a baby.

Maybe this is her way of allying herself with men then- by joining ‘em, because she feels right now she can’t beat ‘em?

Maybe it seems like good way to signal this by applying a sexist term of abuse to other women just because they have disagreed with men?. Hmm Er, about what a woman is. Hmm

Long complained in the Guardian about the ‘“unhelpful, unscientific or deep-rooted in sexist bullshit” myths surrounding pregnancy.’ i have every sympathy for her on that and totally agree- so hopefully now she’s had her baby she’ll realise her career isn’t dead at all just because she’s become a working mother.

then she’ll realise how daft this whole agenda is, ask a few questions to test that and very quickly see what she’s actually supporting. and maybe then she will write a show about that. Otherwise this position just seems like a sad kind of fearful self-policing.

snoutandab0ut · 19/03/2019 07:52

Just FYI for people mentioning Jonathan Pie and Titania McGrath. They’re both characters created by the same male comedian. They’re not real people

wigglybeezer · 19/03/2019 08:11

@Cliques I also went to see Nish Kumar recently and noticed a very muted response from the audience to his anti Ricki Gervais speech, I thought it was possibly because he emphasised the " just want to pee" toilet angle in a town where a court case involving a transwomen sexually assaulting a child a child in a supermarket toilet was pending, interesting that you noticed it too. He made a lot of assumptions and remarks about his audience all being Guardian readers which did not really work in Fife, I enjoyed some of his show but was disappointed...
I have also got fed up with John Oliver, he comes across as hectoring these days...

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 19/03/2019 08:29

snoutandab0ut hahahaha, erm, yeah we know. Titania McGrath is the creation of Andrew Doyle who co-writes Jonathan Pie's stuff. But thanks for letting everyone know that you have the skills to search on the internet for a name and assume that we cannot with our ladyfingers. You a bloke by any chance?

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 19/03/2019 08:32

snoutandab0ut PS did you know that Borat is also not a real man from Kazakhstan, but an actor called Sacha Baron Cohen? And when he appears in your living room he's not really a tiny man who lives in a little glowing box, he's actually appearing on something called a television.

And the ‘comedy terrorist’ was neither comedic nor a terrorist.

Cliques · 19/03/2019 09:10

Wiggly, Jesus, what a complete lack of awareness. I didn’t see much of the Mash Report, I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts instead, and that’s where I knew Nish from mostly. It was the absolute certainty that people are being kneejerk ‘phobes from someone who has not done the research into it and has nothing to lose from being wrong, that really struck me.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 19/03/2019 09:27

Cliques Yes, it's all these blokes chiming in with their 'calm down dear' that's pissing me off - Nish, John Oliver and now Matt Lucas. Because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain - they can look sympathetic whilst palming off men whose gender identity they don't want to deal with as an aspect of their own male sex class.

itsbetterthanabox · 19/03/2019 09:44

@abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise
For a comedian who is talking about it try Fin Taylor.
Wish there were women but everyone is scared of the trans lobby.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 19/03/2019 09:57

itsbetterthanabox Just had a watch. It's good that he's poking fun at the left, but he's still very 'calm down dear' about trans stuff. They never tackle the 'punch a Terf/burn terfs to death' stuff do they? Don't want to acknowledge the violence and threats against women, only the poor little wittle trans women's hurty feels because the bigots who won't let them get their pee pees out in the same room as them.

Marcus Brigstocke doesn't like women very much. I remember him and Phill jupitus giggling like school boys calling overweight older women's stomachs gunts, a cross between a gut and a cunt.
