The reason why National Lottery Community Fund are willing to overlook Mermaids being economical with the truth is that if it all goes to shit, NLCF go "oh noes! we was lied to! definitely not our fault!"

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2019 18:06

Presumably also why they published Mermaids full response as an appendix.

As Gilligan says though, it is fairly obvious they haven't looked at it particular deeply or they will have found evidence that some of the claims are false.

Also felt it was a bit concerning the way they were seperating Susie Green from Mermaids, as far as I am aware they are pretty much one and the same?

Mumfun · 19/02/2019 18:35

Really sad thread which gives an indication of the health problems which are faced by detransitioners .twitter.com/NotableDesister/status/1097877951172014081

And also I doubt that longer term users of cross hormones will escape some of these.

And then add on the very honest statements by Leanne Mills of the physical complications she had :www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6493959/Transsexual-warn-reality-transexual.html

Transitioning should be last resort and not after all other mental health strategies have been exhausted. We need this to be promoted rather than simple affirmation

fidgetspinner555 · 19/02/2019 18:47

Looking at the report - Mermaids have got the money bec they say they do not push medical transition. We need to watch them like a hawk and if they push or promote medical transition in any way, report it to the Lotto.

Popchyk · 19/02/2019 18:59

Susie Green give this statement to the Daily Mail:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3973036/Jackie-Green-heart-controversy-children-young-nine-given-drugs-change-sex.html

"One of these, as we’ve seen, is Susie Green, Jackie’s mother, who is unequivocal: ‘Medical intervention is very important, especially for teenagers who are already in puberty. It’s absolutely vital".

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/02/2019 19:16

They do promote transition

Reading the comments above I really disappointed that these views are held here in the uk

Yes I'm transgender ~ an struggled with life

I'd wished there was the help or support when I grew up

But alas no ~ it was children are seen but not heard

Lots of children grew up having issues that weren't addressed until later and for some they never had the chance.

I knew from an early age but I threw myself into life that I was expected to be part of

I was the macho alpha male royal marine who has seen service all over the world for this country an governments

To the point I had attempted suicide

Fast forward I've transistion
An all the happier for it

Unless you have physically and mentally been in that position or place in life you'll never fully understand

Yes I'm estranged from all my nearest an dearest

But to the outside world and to my face personally I have assimilated an go about my business,

Running a successful multi million pound company world wide dealing with governments and big business

Is it not better to allow children to express their identity sooner rather than later

And having to endure a life time of misery ?

In the end we are all individuals with one life to live

Bigoted, anti comments only do harm
Yes we need to talk ~ but respectively not the vile comments I see an read everyday in the MSM

Yes I'm a mother of two children whom I adopted with my husband and stepmother to four others , and a Aunt to 6 other children,

To the vile people In the world I am ”Not a real Mother ” ie woman

But I can safely assure you I know how to bring up a child that's loved regardless of sex or gender or race

Mum'snet can do a lot of good
But sadly it's not ~ keyboard warriors what ever their sex or gender are just bullies pushing their own motives and agenda

This isn't your choice
It's the children's and they have to be listened to

Not told “what's good for them” by paranoid individuals

Sometimes the child does actually know better than their peers .

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/02/2019 19:34

Nobody is anti trans people.

Women here are concerned about safeguarding, overmedicalisation of children and the removal of women and girls’ sex based protections.

Children cannot consent to things before they are old enough to be capable.

Yarnswift · 19/02/2019 19:36

My kid really, really wanted chocolate for breakfast. He was very insistent

He got porridge. Because I’m his mam, I’m responsible for his safety and welfare and no, he doesn’t know what’s best

HawkeyeInConfusion · 19/02/2019 19:36

The one tiny consolation in all this is that none of these organisations will have anywhere to hide when the harm caused by this organisation is exposed. They have been told. They cannot say they didn't know.

But I could cry for the poor kids who are being manipulated and let down in the meantime.

And I will never buy another lottery ticket.

It's the children's and they have to be listened to

Yes. It's been said before. By people equally invested in ignoring decades of safeguarding knowledge built up in the wake of scandals and exploitation.

Children must be safeguarded.

HerFemaleness · 19/02/2019 19:46

Lesley, one of my children has a medical condition which impacts kidney function. This child has to drink a minimum amount every day. This child has an insistent persistent belief that they don't need to drink. This has been going on for years since diagnosis. Should I just assume my child knows best and not bother trying to get liquid down them? Please advise.

Hulo · 19/02/2019 19:53

Well, I think we all know we're in it for the long game, we keep on holding Mermaids to account.

The review did manage to outline many concerns relating to practice within Mermaids, the need to be clear which is which when expressing opinion, describing an experience or stating fact. Also, the responsibility to ensure the legitimacy of information and the request to provide scripts to the Fund so that the Fund can
continue to be confident the best available statistics are being used.

Not so sure about using 'continue' as currently they are not

And of course, 'Mermaids should work with an academic partner/evaluator to explore the reasons why their longer term outcomes may differ from other services such as the
Tavistock,' and also make the alternative positions of these services clear in their work.

So, the review identified some areas in which Mermaids should improve 'practice, governance, relationship management and quality assurance .'

Great, but I'm not happy that this all means their 'good enough' approach has been given free rein, for the time being at the very least, working with incredibly vulnerable children overlooking many ongoing concerns. And, what continuing level of scrutiny will the Fund be providing...who will be doing it, how deep will it go?

I would have withheld funding until all concerns had been addressed. It's not as if they're about to go under leaving countless families and children stranded

LizzieSiddal · 19/02/2019 19:56

Is it not better to allow children to express their identity sooner rather than later.

What do you actually mean by that?

DpWm · 19/02/2019 20:02

lesley2206
You're lucky you had the privilege to go through male puberty and come to transition on your own terms, in your own time, unlike the childen like Jazz or Jackie, and those who come into contact with Mermaids.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3501436-Jazz-Jennings-My-vagina-looked-SO-bad-that-my-mom-sister-and-the-surgeons-wouldnt-even-let-me-look-at-it

Have a read through this and see if you still support what Mermaids advocate.

Lesley2206 · 19/02/2019 20:16

I actually find that personally offensive to be described like that

You don't know me as a person or what I've endured in my life

What gives you the right to do so ?

Is it any wonder people feel threatened

I have not attacked you with any bitterness
So I suggest you do likewise

An just to add I'm” not your burly individual "

5ft 4' , 61kg
I've always been a female but unfortunately the establishment said different then

And I suffered considerably ~ no one would listen and everyone knew what's best for me

Yes I could have a statistic
But I'm not

Lesley2206 · 19/02/2019 20:23

Actually I came through my adolescents but not without distress or harm
Both physical an mental

Thankfully the services I joined saw something in me that allowed myself to function an flourish

When I could have been isolated an abandoned

I am actually thankful that things are progressing for the youth of today

I would not wish on anyone what I was subjected to or endured

antifa · 19/02/2019 20:28

Great news. Good to see official bodies aren't duped by the lies spread by bigots

vickyjgo · 19/02/2019 20:30

I love that tge small Mumsnet trans hate commuity and Graham Linham totally failed. Not only have Mermiads got the grant they also got £250,000 from the Donkey Kong marathon. The point here is that Mermaids are supporting families going through difficult issues. Mermaids are working with the best treatment as recommended by the international medical community on dealing with children who identify as trans. Mermaids is a parent lead organisation for and by parents doing the best they can for their children. In any other issue Mumsnet would be backing parents who know their children better than anyone.

Lesley2206 · 19/02/2019 20:35

Actually there is so many issues you raise
But through a perspective of ignorance, conjecture an prejudice

Are we as a society and country to embrace the views of the right wing

Learn from history
Society an individuals have many faults

Over medicalistion ? Seriously Doctors have taken an oath
Do no harm

But the general public believe they should have that right

The nazis went after the gays Jews, romany People all undesirable in their eyes an views

If a child questions an after hrs an weeks an months of reviews
Why not allow puberty to be delayed

The law is quite clear on treatment

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 20:36

They also crossdressed, what is your point here?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 20:38

They also silenced and no platformed anyone who disagreed then had punch a Jew style posters in the street.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 20:39

They also claimed to be one of the most impressed and persecuted people on the planet.
