They did medical experiments on autistic and otherwise vulnerable children too.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 20:40

Hitler also made life very nice for those who followed and agreed.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 20:42

American schools no longer teach the second world war, coincidentally this is happening.

Popchyk · 19/02/2019 20:44

"Over medicalistion ? Seriously Doctors have taken an oath
Do no harm"

You mean Helen Webberley who was promoted by Mermaids? Who now has been criminally convicted for running an illegal clinic? And who gave cross-sex hormones to a 12 year old? After a referral from Mermaids?

As a general point, there seem to be a lot of biological males coming out of the woodwork who seem awfully invested in weakening the safeguards created to protect children.

The biological females don't seem to have the same level of interest in weakening safeguards.

Those tweets by Andrew Gilligan must be rather inconvenient.

CandidPeel · 19/02/2019 20:51

Hulo yes!

We need to hold the lottery fund for doing this: " it is recommended that the Big Lottery Fund provides additional support and agrees milestones that ensure Mermaids has an effective quality assurance system for its communications, support services and training. The England Team should work with Mermaids to identify and agree these key milestones.
In addition funding staff should work closely with colleagues from across the Fund as well as user groups, professionals, academics, service providers and other funders working in this field to support the ongoing evolution and development of services for children, young people and families experiencing issues with their gender identity."

The original Mermaids application, and BLF's assessment of it, obtained via FOI is uploaded here, along with the BLF's strategy document on the trans sector (I have also got the various emails back and forward)
drive.google.com/open?id=1_MJ8P6rn0RYBxdrUdkP3RgBhANStjtuH

The original assessment and risk assessment is very general and gentle. None of the processes of scrutiny of quality assurance that the review suggests were in place in these correspondence. This suggests that none of this would have happened without our and Graham L putting on external scrutiny. We should keep holding them to account.

I think this too CandidPeel. The report is a tribute to the work of Glinner and everyone who questioned the grant. I absolutely recognise the downsides of continuing to fund Mermaids (although it is clear they would just have gone somewhere else, like the Donkey person) but they are now under much more scrutiny than they were a few months ago.

No child receives hormones below age 16.
Very few receive blockers before 16. No surgery is carried out before 18 (most likely in earlly 20s).

Mermaids doesn't do any of that, it's the medics, who have years of experience and still don't follow international guidelines.

AyeRobot · 19/02/2019 21:08

Hera2, vickyjgo and Lesley2206 - can a person change sex?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2019 21:09

Jackie Green had full surgery when they were 16.

No child receives hormones below age 16.

Helen Webberley gave hormones to a 12 year old.

I feel sorry for any of your kids. The fact that you'd never accept them, no matter who, or what they are, suggests that many of them would be better off in care. At least they would be allowed to be themselves there

Hahahaha

My child has the freedom to be whoever she wants. She dresses like a boy (jeans and jumper [hmm), has short hair, likes sport and plays rugby.

She is comfortable knowing she is a girl. She understands she doesn’t have to like make up and dolls to be a girl. She understands her ability at sport and maths doesn’t make her a boy.

I feel sorry for the children of parents who are so constrained by gender stereotype that the think liking pink and glitter actually means they have a female brain. That is not allowing them to be themsleves, that is allowing them to believe their preferences make them into something they aren’t.

CosmicCanary · 19/02/2019 21:13

Humans cannot change sex.
Not one transwoman is a female. All transwomen are born male.

Children should be guided and protected by adults not manipulated in a bid to prove something that is impossible and convince the world that what men say and want is fact and not to be challenged.

NotBadConsidering · 19/02/2019 21:13

Clearly Mimmymum and the Monitors have sent the bat signal out, everyone’s here Hmm

LizzieSiddal · 19/02/2019 21:21

Hera, you obviously don’t know the first thing about why people complained about Mermaids. Susie Green took her own child to have full genital surgery at 16.
Mermaids also recommend a Dr, who has just been found guilty of prescribing hormones.

These are some of the reasons people have complained about Mermaids getting lottery money!

HerFemaleness · 19/02/2019 21:23

If allowed my child to be their 'true authentic' non drinking self I rather think I would lose custody. Don't you?

Sometimes kids can have insistent persistent beliefs that are utter bollocks.

Iused2BanOptimist · 19/02/2019 21:26

Kids Company. Kids Company. Kids Company. Kids Company. Kids Company.

Now I think about it, Camila has been very quiet for a while hasn't she. Can't think when I last heard of her.

OlennasWimple · 19/02/2019 21:29

The report at least gives everyone a clear list of points to which Mermaids must be held accountable

Trousering · 19/02/2019 21:31

better off in care

What a repulsive thing to say to parents on a parenting forum.

HerFemaleness · 19/02/2019 21:31

Children should be guided and protected by adults not manipulated in a bid to prove something that is impossible and convince the world that what men say and want is fact and not to be challenged.

Does anyone else find this is all a bit eerily reminiscent of the satanic day care panic of a few decades ago.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/02/2019 21:41

Looking at the difference in outcomes, why, why, why would any parent now take their child to Mermaids ?

DoctoressPlague · 19/02/2019 21:42

Parents who have doubts about an organisation that depicts women as pink Barbies and men as GI Joes should give up their children? I think you might be slightly overreacting.

Hera2 · 19/02/2019 21:45

All males are female for first six weeks of pregnancy so even your beloved Linehan was female for first six weeks and had a natural "sex-change" in the womb.

And nobody on the NHS (which doesn't follow world standards) receives 'mones below age of 16 (More likely 18+) and no NHS Patient receives surgery below 18 (more likely 23 or 24).

Datun · 19/02/2019 21:46

better off in care

That's reminded me of when Mermaids took puppies and sweets to Pride.

Ereshkigal · 19/02/2019 21:47

Glitter families, as dear Rachel would say.
