And he did it with the most derogatory angry expression on his face.

They don't need to spin or leak it- just point it out and make a fuss. The media will do the rest. Any politician with half a brain knows that even an allegation of any kind of discrimination is anathema to the party of Identity Politics. Just light the touch paper and stand back.

It was a Tory MP I believe.

Bejazzled · 19/12/2018 14:06

This story is being repeat ad Infinitum on the media right now.
The Tories have ran out of ideas so they do this. It was like the 'strong and stable' phrase.

I think you'll find it was Jeremy Corbyn who did it.
Oh dear, I'm dizzy with all this spin.

well except that Corbyn was the one who called a gesture vote of no confidence he won't win and then pushed the date back - not a well thought out plan either.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2018 14:07

The Tories have ran out of ideas so they do this

The link I put upthread is the guardian. This is not an issue of the Tories making.

akerman · 19/12/2018 14:07

Presumably the people who see nothing wrong with this would also have no issue with someone being called a ‘stupid Muslim bitch’ or a stupid black bastard

I'd have no issue with someone being called a 'stupid bitch' or a 'stupid bastard' - I'd very much wonder why religion or colour would have to be specified, and that would make it an issue for me.

But Corbyn is a very stupid man, in my view and May is a stupid woman. What annoys me most is that this is reaching the headlines at a time when May is preparing to put troops on the street and stockpile medicine. It seems pretty self-indulgent to focus on whether or not Corbyn called May a stupid woman.

impossiblecat · 19/12/2018 14:08

Former minister Sir Patrick McLoughlin used a point of order to accuse Mr Corbyn of having "muttered" that Theresa May was a "stupid woman".

It was a Tory MP who raised this allegation.

CriticalCondition · 19/12/2018 14:09

So, it is misogynistic to refer to a woman as a woman is it?

What if he had said 'Stupid Jew' of a Jewish person? Or 'Stupid black' or 'Stupid gay' ? Is that alright? Because they are Jewish, or black or gay?

It was a dismissive sexist put-down. in the same way that the above epithets are dismissive racist and homophobic put-downs.

And 'stupid man' is not the same. Dismissive but it does not carry the same connotations.

I've watched the video several times. The word is clearly 'woman', not 'people'.

Lottapianos · 19/12/2018 14:10

'I thoroughly dislike Corbyn and don't fancy making excuses for him, but Theresa May is presiding over one of the biggest political messes I've ever seen.'

You're right Stars. And I do think that Theresa May is stupid or at least incredibly reckless, and has been a bloody disaster from day 1. I also believe very much that Corbyn is a misogynist who doesn't give a shiny fig about the women in his own party or anyone else. That said, I'm reluctant to hang him out to dry over this because I can understand why he's fuming at her incompetence. I think most of us are.

BettyOcean · 19/12/2018 14:11

Sorry, I am going to be a bit of a petulant child here.

I want a fucking alternative (angry foot stomp).

I don't want to be forced to vote Conservative because the opposition is led by that (not going to call him what I feel like calling him, I'd breach MN talk guidelines for sure).

I will say it is not wise to even mouth that while you know you are being filmed. I despair that someone with such poor judgement might get to run any country, let alone the one where I live.

Badgerthebodger · 19/12/2018 14:11

I am utterly disgusted and ashamed by almost everyone in all parties in the HoC who are supposed to be representing the people who voted for them. They’re an absolute shambles and I haven’t heard anything sensible from anyone for far too long given the mess we’re in on several fronts. That we still have a parliament where either TM’s or JC’s comments are acceptable, and where it is de rigeur to rile, insult and belittle your opponents instead of relying on your well-thought out policies, makes me despair.

Stopwoofing · 19/12/2018 14:11

it does all seem like a terrible mess to me - the system that gave us Corbyn, May and Brexit is at fault - we should never push through vast change on the back of one close referendum with no vote on the actual plan. I really hope we have learned some kind of lesson here about the problems of referendums.

Brexit is a poisoned chalice because there are so many factions, nobody could do a good job of it.

bigKiteFlying · 19/12/2018 14:11

Would it have been acceptable if Corbyn had called her a "childish woman"? Because I can't think of anything much more childish than putting on a pantomime act in response to a national crisis.

It's how the common behaves - though I agree it's probably past time it updated it’s behaviour.

It would have been more “normal” commons behaviour to quip back something back - perhaps talking about the brexit farce the conservatives are currently producing.

Though TBH calling people with different views stupid is happening more and more everywhere. I still think Stupid woman is a particularly loaded phrase - hence the lying about what was said subsequently - and both show poor political judgement IMO.

ajandjjmum · 19/12/2018 14:11

Clearly says 'stupid woman'.

Now says he didn't. So....Corbyn must be a liar, that's a surprise.

Bejazzled · 19/12/2018 14:11

It was a Tory MP who raised this allegation.

He was instructed to do so I believe. Quite rightly so.
The gathered press packs highlighted it to those in the chamber and the message was passed for it to be raised as a point of order.

Although I fail to see the significance of which party raised it? Wrong is wrong whatever colour it wears.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 14:12

I don't really get the uproar. He's not gonna use a swear word is he, so what other noun would he use after the word stupid, to call a woman stupid?

DeepanKrispanEven · 19/12/2018 14:13

as a woman watching another woman under attack for doing her job I'm utterly disgusted on a humane level by this.

I don't really understand this. It's the nature of politics that politicians regularly come under attack for doing their job. Why should a female politician be immune?

And, in her case, it's at best dubious whether she actually is doing her job.

MargueritaPink · 19/12/2018 14:15

Brexit is a poisoned chalice because there are so many factions, nobody could do a good job of it

I agree. It is so easy for Corbyn to snipe on the sidelines knowing he will never be called on to do anything- not even have a policy on Brexit.

Bowchicawowow · 19/12/2018 14:15

She is stupid and she is a woman. I don’t see the problem.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 14:15

FWIW, I don't really care about May or Corbyn but I watched the video and it does look more like he said people to me.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 14:15

the second syllable he makes certainly looks more like "ple" than "man"

akerman · 19/12/2018 14:16

What if he had said 'Stupid Jew' of a Jewish person? Or 'Stupid black' or 'Stupid gay' ? Is that alright? Because they are Jewish, or black or gay?

To me it just isn't the same. If I described someone as a lovely woman, nobody would turn a hair. If I described them as a lovely Jew or a lovely gay, then it would be really weird to the point of offensive. I don't see 'stupid woman' as worse than 'stupid man', but accept I may be in the minority.

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 14:17

@impossiblecat

How have the “Tories done this” is there a tiny Tory in Jeremy’s mouth making him say stuff?

1hello2hello · 19/12/2018 14:18

Interestingly Victoria Aitkins has been on BBC. JC knew he was going to be asked about what he had said at PMQs because the question was laid with notice. He legged it and didn't come back to clarify that he said people...or not.

The face on Bercow's face when he is challenged is a picture.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:18

Am shocked that people here are defending this shit! Seriously?

He wasn't trying to be factual in calling her stupid (he has two grade Es at A Level so is in no position to sling mud that way), he was calling her a stupid woman with a horrible sneer on his face because he is a sexist pig and it is a put down used especially for older women by pathetic misogynist men.

Outfuckingrageous.

1hello2hello · 19/12/2018 14:19

The expression on Bercow's face !
