At first I was delighted to see thisat last a big name in women's sport is speaking up! but then I got angry all over again that this utterly obvious point has to be explained to an adult, in this case, a Guardian journalist. It boggles the mind.

Rachel McKinnon according to their published words is an extremely unpleasant person. I just can't imagine saying 'do you realise who you are talking to' to anyone at all; I can't begin to imagine saying it to MARTINA NAVRATILOVA when discussing sport. Jesus.

The answer is that RMCK knows that Martina Navratilova stating a clearly obvious fact, with zero word salad or distraction, is very dangerous to the ideology she promotes. MN has respect and standing due to her achievements. Hence the strength of the attack. Hence the attempt to distract by talking about penises not being used in sport.

How does RMcK sleep at night?

Floisme · 21/12/2018 09:13

I really hope Navratilova does learn from this, just not in the way McKinnon intended.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/12/2018 09:15

RMcK

McKinnon is a fanatic who genuinely believes transwomen are women, and anything that stops them competing in women's sports is discrimination. If 'cis' women can't keep up - tough.

andyoldlabour · 21/12/2018 09:15

@hackmum

That is exactly what McKinnon and others of their ilk are - male bullies, self promoting, narcissistic, pumped up, male bullies.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/12/2018 09:16

Twitter is certainly a bastion of tra activists- and it certainly doesn’t reflect the general population although when you’re on it, it feels like it does!

The fb thread of radio four after trans in sports was discussed on women’s hour was probably 90% of people NOT in favour of transwomen competing in women’s sports.

Annandale · 21/12/2018 09:19

Well. Farage has taught us that single-issue fanatics can achieve almost anything.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/12/2018 09:20

They’ve taken over the bbc too, I feel. Worrying.

andyoldlabour · 21/12/2018 09:21

@hackmum

As a non Twitter user, I often drill down to see what the people making these horrible comments are really like - I basically go onto their Twitter feeds and read through them, and it can be pretty disturbing. On the whole, these are not people who you could have a reasonable conversation or debate with, they are fundamentalists who are very confrontational and aggressive, and in fact I am laughing to myself now - they are full of testosterone Grin

Mariotta · 21/12/2018 09:22

According to Helen Staniland's commissioned polling, only 13% of Britons express positive support for women's sport going mixed sex. (60% are certain it shouldn't happen, 24% don't know, and 3% decline to give an opinion, even in an anonymous situation).

andyoldlabour · 21/12/2018 09:25

@Helmetbymidnight

Not just the BBC, but previously good newspapers (three or four years ago) such as the Independent and Guardian.

VickyEadie · 21/12/2018 09:27

Jeez - see, that's terrifying in itself. Only 60% are "certain it shouldn't happen".

Watch this space - drip, drip, drip and women's sport will be gone.

Annandale · 21/12/2018 09:27

But Mariotta, that's absolutely fine with the TRAs, because women's sport is remaining single sex. Isn't it? Their account is that they are all women. Rachel McKinnon is a woman and was a woman from conception, because, er.... [rustles papers] There was simply a minor genetic error, just like any other genetic error, which resulted in them having a penis, testicles, a completely different body and pelvis shape from other women, more muscle strength and the whole list of other physiological things [not a biologist Blush]. Just a tiny genetic error. Would you exclude people with six fingers from women's sport? Be careful you aren't a transphobe.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 21/12/2018 09:30

Mumsnet has a great reach, and I'm sure there is someone reading this thread who knows Martina Navratilova in real life. Please reach out to her and tell her she has the support of Mumsnetters, or point her at this thread.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/12/2018 09:35

Martina: I did exactly that and you are still carrying on. When will you stop trying to rub my nose in it? Come on!!!

McKinnon: Have you apologized? Have you admitted that you caused harm? Could you maybe stop attacking people trying to help you do better?

The Inquisition was made of people like McKinnon.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 21/12/2018 09:37

"I am sorry if I said anything anywhere near transphobic- certainly I meant no harm - I will educate myself better on this issue but meantime I will be quiet about it. Thank you"

Of course women > espeically lesbians > should keep quiet, and never ever challenge or disagree with penis-people.

Same old same old really isn't it.

ShovingLeopard · 21/12/2018 09:40

Sad to see Martina has been bullied into saying the emperor is clothed.

The terms 'bigot' and 'transphobe' really are like waving a magic wand, in terms of their ability to command instant obedience. We are all so frightened of appearing bigoted, that as soon as someone shouts the accusation, everybody rolls over.

The twitter bullying, the venom and force with which the imposed orthodoxy is pressed on any dissenters is chilling. While the GC side remain largely calm and measured, the TRAs impose their will by shouting, stamping their feet, accusing, and directing the very thoughts they deign to allow their victims.

I am a calm, measured person myself, but I do wonder if the GC side will need to adopt the TRA's tactics to gain traction on this. It's clear the TRA bullies will go their full length, and nobody, least of all Twitter, has the gumption to stop them.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/12/2018 09:40

Hopefully, Martinas friends are privately messaging her right now going ‘this fella is a nutter’ (not my thoughts, of course)

The newspapers often have an agenda- The bbc though! I thought they are supposed to be ‘impartial’

NotTerfNorCis · 21/12/2018 09:41

Hahaha McKinnon says:

"In my community, we're accountable to our actions...and we WELCOME being called in/out when we fuck up."

No you don't. You think your opinions are beyond reproach. You'd go mad if someone 'called you out'. Hypocrite.

I've reported McKinnon for targetted harassment and suggest that as many people as possible do the same.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/12/2018 09:43

McKinnon has blocked me so can't report.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/12/2018 09:45

Twitter is totally up the tra activists arses though.

Sexnotgender · 21/12/2018 09:45

McKinnon has blocked me so can't report.

They’ve blocked me too but you can still report the whole account.

R0wantrees · 21/12/2018 09:45

Martina Navratilova has said she's not going to engage with McKinnon or the 'Katie' troll on twitter anymore, but going to find out more and talk to people who are experts.

This is not a woman silenced.

Martina Navratilova knows a lot of people influential in sport.
Martina Navratilova is very influential within sport.
Martina Navratilova is influential.
(she hadn't realised what was going on with regards males competing in women's sports, most people still haven't)

R0wantrees · 21/12/2018 09:48

The newspapers often have an agenda- The bbc though! I thought they are supposed to be ‘impartial’

There is a thread collating some (of the many) examples of BBC bias:

Helmetbymidnight · 21/12/2018 09:49

Thanks Rowan

NotTerfNorCis · 21/12/2018 09:50

Hm it looks like you can't report individual tweets if you're blocked, but you can still report the account itself. On the right hand side there is a 'user actions' menu which gives you three options: mute, block and report. If you 'report', there's an option for 'their tweets are abusive or hateful'.
