The University of Sussex Students’ Union stands in solidarity with our trans and non-binary students against the transphobic statements made by Dr. Kathleen Stock.

We will not tolerate hate on our campus, and we will do everything in our power to protect our students. Trans and non-binary lives are not a debate.

We will work with the University to ensure that they are actively committed to protecting the rights of trans and non-binary students.

We encourage any student affected by this to contact the Students’ Union full-time officers at [email protected].

This statement was written in collaboration with our trans and non-binary officer.

You might want to get the title changed. It's the student union who have made this statement not the university itself.

That's not a great advert for the standard of education provided by that university, is it.

Oh dear.... I hope they don't teach biology at that Uni.

I hope that the actual Sussex Uni come out in support of Dr Kathleen too. After the event at Northumbria Uni a few weeks back, the student union condemned the event, but the actual uni supported the event, citing "free speech" as the reason.

What utter nonsense.

Universities should be bastions of free speech, free ideas, sharing of knowledge, discussion of political ideas. This really has gone too far.

I used to really dislike the term "snowflakes" - but damn, it's becoming accurate. Sadly.

I'm actually quite relieved to read it's just the SU. I mean, it's a dreadful statement but it would be 10x worse if it was the actual university saying it.

Sussex Uni have said that they stand by her right to free speech, which is what they should say.

It is thoroughly unfair that Dr Stock is getting so much harrassment by standing up and calling for debate. But others are afraid to do the same because they are in more precarious contracts and are afraid that some noise on the part of their student union (wherever they are) will result in them losing their jobs.

To be threatened for stating a biological fact, in a free country, in 2018, is horrific.

The SU should be ashamed of themselves, and the university themselves need to state in no uncertain terms that they support free speech. Supporting reality as well would be nice, but that seems a revolutionary act these days...
