You couldn't make it up at this point, could you?

""Trans Voices for Repeal would like the..Together for Yes campaign..to formally acknowledge the pain their actions have caused trans people in Ireland, the negative effect their campaign has had on the mental health of trans people and the unnecessary nature of this exclusion."

Also, mentioning vaginas wombs etc is way triggering but penises must be constantly present both physically and in conversations all the time.

well said!

Mxyzptlk · 27/05/2018 15:07

it seems likely that any changes to definition of 'woman' and 'female' would also have implications for trans women

Only for those transwomen who claim to be women.

Also for women who are female, let's not forget.

gendercritter · 27/05/2018 15:17

Supermatch you are behaving dangerously like a transphobe on this thread. Careful there! It might be a fringe thing, but it is that fringe which is proving quite successful at provoking change in our laws and society.

Also....intersex? Again? Nevermind the fact intersex people don't want to be included in this debate, don't most DSD's leave you sterile? My female friend with a DSD is.

robotcartrainhat · 27/05/2018 15:21

they make a reasonable point about trans men who may fall pregnant and so are effected by the issue... so should probably have been included in the literature.

TinselAngel · 27/05/2018 15:25

It's hilarious that apparently it's transphobic to find trans inclusion "confusing", then they have to have a glossary of terms at the end!

SimonBridges · 27/05/2018 15:30

If someone can get pregnant then they are a woman.

Popchyk · 27/05/2018 15:40

They were included. As the women that they are.

I must say I am looking forward to some inclusive sporting events this summer.

I particularly enjoy the Wimbledon Non-Binary, Gender-Fluid and Non-Men's singles. I'm not quite so struck on the non-Women's singles. That Andy Murray can be a potty mouth.

And who is up for the non-women's football World Cup in Russia?

SardineReturns · 27/05/2018 15:41

The adjusting of language to no longer refer to women and girls but to

menstruatrors
pregnant people
people at risk of genital mutilaiton
and all the rest of it

Obscures the fact that there are a distinct set of risks, attitudes towards a particular group in society that is made up of one sot of person - cunty.

Abortion was (in many places is) illegal because women are the ones who get pregnant, both women and children were until recently (still are in some countries) the property of men, not deemed person-enough to make decisions about their own bodies, that their own bodies do not belong to them.

To pretend that this struture applies just as much to men is a massive lie, quite frankly.

Of course as we see pushback against women's gains in various parts of the world, removing our language / obscuring the fact of sex based oppression by never saying anything happens solely to women and girls (meaning cunty people) is a great win for patriarchy .

Irish feminists and the Irish trans community have happily stood together to repeal the 8th

Indeed.

I have read young Irish women addressing one particular Irish TRA on Twitter in recent months (I won't name him because it'll draw the locusts, let's just say it's the bravest and stunningest blah blah) and saying that they are so glad to have been educated about gender neutral language and that they now CRINGE to hear themselves say "pregnant women" instead of "pregnant people". It breaks my heart so see such capitulation in the face of male bullying and gaslighting.

What happened with the Together4yes campaign was: they all got together under one umbrella and I'm guessing someone decided that they were going to focus on WOMEN and GIRLS as they are the ones who get pregnant. As it happens, the people of Ireland are a lot more liberal than we thought, and have voted to help the WOMEN and GIRLS who have crisis pregnancies. However, they probably would be a bit put off by counterintuitive language like "pregnant people" and it wasn't used. This has enraged the TRA narcissists who like to make everything all about them.

Well they can go fuck themselves. WOMEN and GIRLS were sent to Magdalene laundries. WOMEN and GIRLS gave birth to secret babies in attics and hedges. WOMEN and GIRLS got raped by their employers or by random men, and had their whole lives destroyed by the shame. WOMEN and GIRLS had backstreet abortions and ended up dead and dumped in the road like the woman in the Mamie Cadden case. WOMEN and GIRLS had their educational and employment opportunities curtailed, with girls not allowed to study higher level maths in most schools til the 1960s and women being forced to give up work on marriage if they worked in the civil service. WOMEN had their bodies ruined by symphisiotomies or unnecessary hysterectomies. WOMEN were denied the pill by their Catholic GPs. WOMEN had their health ruined by ten or fifteen pregnancies and nowhere to go if their husbands beat them. WOMEN could be raped by their husbands til 1988. WOMEN had to be "churched" after childbirth because they were unclean. WOMEN and GIRLS were getting the boat or the plane to England, or haemorrhaging from illegal abortion pills at home. WOMEN and GIRLS. And this is ABOUT US.

CoolCarrie · 27/05/2018 15:50

Hilarious reading that bloody rubbish

dontstoprepealin · 27/05/2018 15:50

Please stop assuming the person whose Tweet you quoted above speaks for Irish feminism!

CoolCarrie · 27/05/2018 15:52

As pp have said do they have to butt into to every thing? !

CosmicCanary · 27/05/2018 15:57

As pp have said do they have to butt into to every thing? !

Yes because if they miss out on a female issue then people may start questioning are they really women?

It is appropriation of the highest order.

Ereshkigal · 27/05/2018 16:02

Yes that was what I assumed. Thank you.

ChattyLion · 27/05/2018 16:22

Great post dontstoprepealin

lightthedarkness · 27/05/2018 16:25

Fab post dontstoprepealin

Incredible that you even need to state this but....

ToeToToe · 27/05/2018 16:26

Well said, dontstoprepealing

Pratchet · 27/05/2018 16:38

I don’t think it can be taken as representative of the thinking of trans people as a whole - as with critical feminists, there’s going to be a wide range of opinions in any group.

It is certainly representative of the people who are getting laws written which pretend that men can be women.

dontstoprepealin · 27/05/2018 16:42

Pratchet, it's fairly representative of the main trans rights org in Ireland, TENI, who are currently pushing to have self-id extended to under-18s.

YesItsADebate · 27/05/2018 16:44

Dontstoprepealin I’ve screenshotted that for my ‘sanity’ folder. It’s there to counterbalance the ‘violent threats I received today’ folder Cake

NotMeOhNo · 27/05/2018 16:47

These fucking misogynists want to obscure language around the patriarchy, so we can't talk about how it has traditionally operated in Ireland to harm women and girls. Instead the abortion debate is just a vague 'oh people who happen to have this body have had tribulations' but we can't connect this issue with male oppression. That would be transphobic to TIFs FFS.

NotTerfNorCis · 27/05/2018 17:10

Good post, @dontstoprepealin. I'm guessing this stunning, brave and fantastic TRA is the one who centered himself very thoroughly in the repeal movement. He retweeted Sinéad and also this one: twitter.com/CaseyExplosion/status/1000136747966238721

dontstoprepealin · 27/05/2018 17:21
