Some are suggesting it may be permanently. The silencing of women continues.

SWERF = Sex Worker Exclusionary Radical Feminist

Being 'Pro Sex work' means choosing prositution as a career is as 'valid' as any other career

Funny how these TRAs are pro sex work and pro porn. You'd almost think there was a link between it all.

Datun · 23/03/2018 10:52

Good god. Are all these men autogynephiles? Every last one?

Whilst I agree that Twitter is a law unto its own and not necessarily reflective of real life, it IS a massive platform for information sharing.

Fortunately, there are more and more gender critical women (and men) picking up the fight.

Venice - I'm aghast at the way you personally are targetted. But take solace from the fact that it's because you must be silenced.

Holding a mirror up to this issue is guaranteed to implode the ideology. Whether now, or eventually.

You're not alone.

Triliteration · 23/03/2018 10:58

I’m shocked by Twitter’s bias against us. A man who likes baby clothes and ballet threatened to get me into trouble through my professional body. Twitter’s response was that

“we take a number of factors into consideration when evaluating whether a Tweet or account violates our policies. This includes the context of the Tweet,”

That says to me that anyone they view as gender critical will not be protected, whatever is done to them. This despite the fact that their e-mail includes this statement:

In order to ensure that people feel safe expressing diverse opinions and beliefs, we do not tolerate behavior that crosses the line into abuse, including behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another user’s voice.

Triliteration · 23/03/2018 11:00

Sorry, forgot to say that the person who made the threat was not censored in any way, despite the fact he’d threatened others in exactly the same way in the past.

DrRadFem · 23/03/2018 11:01

Thank you Mumsnet towers! It's heartening to read all these responses. Still don't know how to use this - how do you follow people and how do you send/receive DMs?! 😬

So much love for you all 💕💕💕💕

littlevoiceofsanity · 23/03/2018 11:02

I haven't blocked many TRAs although they have blocked me. My feelings are that they expose themselves as they become increasingly angry up against calm facts. Twitter has suspended my account twice but only because they spotted suspicious activity on it. Password change and off we go again.
Sometimes it's disheartening seeing the sheer stupidity and endless dog piles in but they are disturbed by our voices which I take as a good sign.

Venice I'm sorry they got to you.

OvaHere · 23/03/2018 11:04

Does anyone have any web skills? Maybe we could create our own version of Twitter?

TWATTER - social media for vagina feminists. Grin

Datun · 23/03/2018 11:09

You can't really follow people.

The site is easier to navigate if you use the mobile site, rather than the desktop site. Go to the bottom of whatever page you're on and flip it to mobile site.

The search button in the bottom right-hand corner will let you search for a particular poster.

DMing is done by going to a comment and looking at the three dots in the bottom right. Clicking on that will take you to the DM function for that particular poster.

Protocol for answering specific people is to hover on their name so you can copy and paste it into your post. A star either side makes it bold. If you put an @ in front of it (no stars), it bolds it and automatically sent them an email to say they have been tagged, if they have subscribed to that function.

The three dots next to particular post itself is useful for book marking. Next time you open that thread it will automatically take you to the post you have bookmarked.

The 'I'm on' button at the bottom of your screen will automatically show you all the current threads that you have posted on.

Lastly, on the desktop version, go to the top of the page with the drop-down arrow and go to customise. You can colour in your posts, and that of the opening poster, to make navigating easier.

Trueheart1 · 23/03/2018 11:20

DrRadfem. Datun neglected to mention that Datun is a very highly regarded poster here and the person we would vote in as our leader, if we needed a leader.

TerfsUp · 23/03/2018 11:22

I would also vote for Amy Desir, should she be interested.

Terfsup I agree Amy Desir is brilliant.

Twatter Grin that made me lol

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 23/03/2018 13:31

Right so now do we get this in the press?
Who would cover this? This is outright silencing of women.

Wobbleslikeaweeble · 23/03/2018 13:41

I think it is sex worker exclusionary rad fem - meaning we oppose porn and prostitution, which is bad in a 'sex positive!!' climate.

They also continually spread lies that those against porn and prostitution hate the actresses and prostitutes pretty much as they spread the lie that if you’re critical in any way of gender politics then you hate transfolk.

Juells · 23/03/2018 13:43

Jealous, innit?

Wobbleslikeaweeble · 23/03/2018 13:43

How did they get cursed’s pics, are they sure it is them, i haven’t seen them.

An account which is named Dr Truefem is targeted harassment in itself.

Except twitter's report method doesn't have a comment feature in which you can explain this.

Which rather exploits this failing under the banner of humour or parody.

You can create an account, abusing and mocking someone which IS targeted harassment, but because you don't directly message someone, that's fine.

At the same time you can tweet things using humour to point out the absurdity of something and be jumped on for 'promoting hatred'.

In the end it comes down to the censor and what their political position is and who controls the platform, because such decisions are subjective and down to perspective rather than being a decision being made in the same way you would expect from a court of law in how it weights up the argument from both sides.

Because of this, the medium kills free speech, before things ever get to a court of law who has to legal power to rule fairly and impartially.

In other words twitter has in built partiality which favours those who are like those who are employed by twitter.

In terms of intersectionality, the system itself discourages it through the way it operates.

Not only that, it actually amplifies that bias in forcing those who don't share in those views off the platform.

It becomes a system of social control in its own right. Tools of social control are what authoritarians use.

This should be a concern to anyone who believes in democracy. Those who profess to be liberal but use this type of social control or celebrate when an organised campaign against an individual forces them off the platform, are not progressive nor liberal.

They just don't know it.

The worst bit is success on social media tips over into real life and affects actual political policy.

Its social distortion which in the long run will be harmful to wider society because of who is excluded from the conversation.

When people wake up to it, it will be too late. In fact, it already is.

The best you can do, is simply say not in my name and go down fighting.

Like every political revolution by authoritarians the first they go after are the educated liberals because they are the ones who pose the biggest threat to them by using critical thought and resisting propaganda.

And that is why its the feminists first. They are easy pickings. There is already a bad attitude to them and one that says 'oh well they deserve it for being demanding / mouthy'.

But they are just the first.

Right side of history? Perhaps people would like to know their history first before spouting such bollocks.

Don't worry, when you've stopped being useful, you'll be fair game too.

daysofpearlyspencer · 23/03/2018 14:44

This is seriously scary, I follow Dr Radfem

SunsetBeetch · 23/03/2018 16:18

Ummm I think posting photos of someone could be deemed doxxing, which is definitely a bannable offence on twitter.

SunsetBeetch · 23/03/2018 16:28

Having said that, twitter's moderation is pretty shoddy. It seems to be mostly about numbers of reports rather than the actual offence. And verified accounts seem to get a free pass a lot of the time.

Having said that, nazis just keep coming back eith new accounts every time they're banned. There's an account on there called diejewdie who just keeps coming back and has multiple accounts going at the same time, so it's not like they seem to have any clever algorithms

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2018 17:06

Having said that, nazis just keep coming back eith new accounts every time they're banned.

I'm not convinced you can reasonably perma ban someone. I know of people who created 1000s of FB accounts to cheat at FB games. They also used those accounts to harass players they didn't like. A friend of mine had stuff sent to her friends, family and place of work through the game.

So if people want to use the site they will, and moderators can only reactively respond to that rather than act proactively. They will never stay onto of it. Plus, the number of users a platform has is directly related to his value and the profit if can raise through advertising revenue.

Anonymous accounts will just regenerate, which is part of the reason you are at something of a disadvantage if you use your 'real' account. That said 'real accounts' are more powerful than fakes and sock puppets.

The idea that you can somehow 'regulate' social media I find difficult to get my head around, as you are always at the mercy of the view of the censor and the determination of the abusers. I don't see how you can crack down without affecting legitimate and users who use platforms without exploiting its flaws and weaknesses than it affects the trolls.

I suspect it will come in, but there will be an effect which is not necessarily a positive one anyway.

The alternative is that you have to sign up and register an account with a real name and address. This also has draw backs and issues over access for people who are financially disadvantaged or perhaps have been stalked/harassed in the past and have reason not to reveal their true identity (which of course disproportionately affects women).
