Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My elderly parents peak transed today

MyBeloved · 20/02/2018 18:33

I was having a lively debate with my parents (both in their 80s and incredibly with it and intelligent) and the subject of womens only safe spaces came up. I decided to tell them about the proposed issues involving TIMs.

And they peak transed.

So begins the spread of this information among their friends, and the ripples will spread.

@phoenixtherabbit

The majority do keep their male genitals, yes

Where are your stats for that?

‘’These figures indicate that about 1% of the UK population, some 650,000 people, are likely to be gender incongruent to some degree. So far, only about 30,000 have sought medical help for gender dysphoria. Dutch research indicates that around a fifth of the 650,000 will do so, amounting to a further 100,000 people.’’ Source here

This makes me uncomfortable because youre tarring all transwomen with the same brush. You're basically telling people they should be wary of trans women. Scared that they're going to be raped in a changing room.

Let's turn that on it's head. Because there is a small number of genuine (ie. properly transitioned) transwomen out there, we should therefore let anyone who flocks under the trans umbrella (ie. autogynephiles, cross-dressers, voyeurs and various other fetishists) into our changing rooms and hospital wards too? How many women are you prepared to see raped in order to be nice?

phoenixtherabbit · 20/02/2018 21:28

You won't see me on the "other side of the peak" because I'm not small minded and filled with hate.

Why can you not accept that some transwomen genuinely do want to be women and feel like a woman (sorry bad explanation)

Do you think all transwomen are pretending so they can perv on you in the changing rooms or rape you in topshop?

Don't you find that a bit unfair saying all x group must be y because some are.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/02/2018 21:29

Because we know that they're not the only people who the term "trans" is now applied to.

Summerisdone · 20/02/2018 21:29

All you guys here on Mumsnet peaked transed myself. Previously I had been very much of the mind “what’s the issue? Why can’t we all accept people for who they are, even if that is a woman who was born male? Etc.”
After I read a couple posts on here I soon woke up to the problems that are arising for women. Now I speak to many people about it, and my mum and my teenage sisters have all taken a different stance on the issue too.

My sisters are in year 10 and are forced to share a changing room and toilet at school with a classmate that they’ve known as a boy since age 4, because he came back after last October half term and announced he’s actually now a girl. None of the uncomfortable girls can speak out without worry that all the other classmates and teachers will label them transphobic and prejudice or whatever Angry

GinAndSonic · 20/02/2018 21:32

Phoenix I can totally accept that some TIMs want to be women. But, as evidenced by their wanting to be women, they aren't women. It is not hateful or bigoted to not want to undress in the presence of men.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/02/2018 21:32

As absurd as it is to be expected to view any random male person as a woman/girl it's extra absurd when you've known them most of your life.

TeaEnjoyingRadientFeminist · 20/02/2018 21:34

Why can you not accept that some transwomen genuinely do want to be women

I want never gets and all that...

phoenixtherabbit · 20/02/2018 21:35

It's hateful and bigoted to be unaccepting of people who are just trying to live their life how they feel they should be.

It's not fair to assume all transwomen are weirdos perverts and rapists just because some are

Weebo · 20/02/2018 21:35

I don't hate transpeople.

I'm happy to stand with them and fight for their rights but they shouldn't be at the expense of already hard-fought women's rights.

Enlightening people about the current attempts to erode and replace those rights is not spreading hate.

I understand how it can seem that way because it doesn't sound very nice to a lot of people when someone states the fact that trans women are not women.

Sadly it has gotten to the point now where it's impossible for people to sit around and be nice but that's not the fault of feminists. It's the angry and extreme TRA's.

People need to be directing their horror in their direction.

TerfyMcTerface · 20/02/2018 21:36

It's not fair to assume all transwomen are weirdos perverts and rapists just because some are*

Straw man alert.

fishdogpancakes · 20/02/2018 21:37

phoenix No one is filled with hate towards transgender people.

I've already said most of them are sweet and lovely people.

This campaign to push Self ID and medicate children although even the pro gender legal writings say 80% will change their minds and become happily Gay.

Who stands to gain? It's not the genuine transgender people who are as much at risk as women will be, perhaps more so because they will also face the anger and prejudice of many men. Think football hooligan mentality.

Who stands to gain are the people who are making money from the drugs they are prescribing to children. Vast sums of money.
Who else? Every paedophile, potential rapist and woman hater in the UK.

Who loses? You are smart enough to work it out.

MaxWeber · 20/02/2018 21:37

These threads are like the bra intervention threads of yore. It's so lovely to see the scales fall from the eyes.

Keep reading, Phoenix. Lots of us used to be where you are, honestly, just like we used to wear 34C bras.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/02/2018 21:38

Can I add a little scarecrow to the list of smileys it would be nice to have? Better than typing "strawman".

TheXXFactor · 20/02/2018 21:38

Do you think all transwomen are pretending so they can perv on you in the changing rooms or rape you in topshop

Nope -and I don't think all men want to rape or perv on me either. I just don't know how to tell the difference between the ones who do and the ones who don't in a public place when they are strangers to me. How are you planning to tell?

Weebo · 20/02/2018 21:39

Phoenix who exactly has said they believe all trans women are perverts?

You do realise that most so-called 'TERF's' have the utmost sympathy and support for genuine transpeople who just want to get on with their lives?

AngryAttackKittens · 20/02/2018 21:40

I remember when I realized that the bra alphabet goes past DD and it was like Brigadoon opened up before my eyes. Or Bragadoon, possibly.

Please give your daughters school a copy of the Transgendertrend guidance for schools.
Are you aware of it?

fishdogpancakes · 20/02/2018 21:43

AngryKittens Thank you for the much needed laugh! was that a stealth boast said I looking at my somewhat smaller offerings

OlennasWimple · 20/02/2018 21:43

Ha ha at the bra intervention comparison!

phoenixtherabbit · 20/02/2018 21:43

Nobody has said it in so many words but it is fairly obvious isn't it.

Your happy to exclude genuine transwomen to keep out non genuine ones. Ok I can see why but how is that fair. Do they not deserve rights?

Or do only real women deserve rights?

Should we make transwomen use men's changing rooms and let them get raped instead of us? Is that ok?

fishdogpancakes · 20/02/2018 21:44

Yes there are now plenty of extra bra fitters at M&S waiting to help us. They say they are women...

OlennasWimple · 20/02/2018 21:44

What rights do transwomen not have?

How should we grant them those rights?

If there is a clash between transwomen's rights and women's right (or men's rights), who should be expected to give up something to facilitate transwomen's rights?

fishdogpancakes · 20/02/2018 21:46

phoenix no one has suggested we want transgender people to get raped although of course they will have more height and physical strength to fight back than most of us would. Hannah Mouncey comes to mind.
