My elderly parents peak transed today

I was having a lively debate with my parents (both in their 80s and incredibly with it and intelligent) and the subject of womens only safe spaces came up. I decided to tell them about the proposed issues involving TIMs.

And they peak transed.

So begins the spread of this information among their friends, and the ripples will spread.

Problem is, women expressing any opinion on any topic in any tone are often called "angry" or "shrill" or "harsh." It's the "woman dares to speak her mind" part that people don't like, not the quality of her arguments.

Like Charlotte's blog. "You're old and you're mean" is the entirety of her argument. She doesn't actually formulate any kind of rebuttal.

It's pretty much the same old misogyny (internalized and externalized), different day.

I do get the point of not alienating lurkers and people who haven't really thought about the issues. That's a good thing. But I also think women are judged more harshly. And a lot of this is rage-inducing. And I'm also not criticizing anyone's posting style here. I find FWR regulars to be reasonable and well-informed.

The "p" stands for "pansexual," the fun new sparkly pomo word for bisexual.

thebewilderness · 21/02/2018 14:57

In addition to not wanting predators in the changing rooms and loos as self ID provides for I must admit that I deeply resent the claim being made by some people that women should act as human shields for men who identify as women.

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 15:07

Of course! Thank you.

Datun · 21/02/2018 15:09

I've just done an advanced search for Charlotte's friend Olive Branch.

Contrary to what Charlotte says, Olive hasn't engaged on the feminist boards at all. And certainly not in the spirit that her name suggests, as Charlotte has said.

I am wondering whether Olive Branch is actually Charlotte's mum.

She has been posting on MN for years, with comments about her daughter, on an off. And seems a nice woman with all the normal concerns about children.

Perhaps she mentioned these discussions to Charlotte, who then decided to write up her own opinion. An opinion which seems, again, to be a knee-jerk reaction with nothing to back it up.

I wish Charlotte and Olive would come on here, after listening to some actual transpeople explaining why discussion is not transphobic.

I do find myself despairing of uninformed youngsters who criticise older women, on the basis absolutely nothing.

It takes a certain kind of mentality to imagine that women simply stop reading and lose all sense of reason when they hit middle-age.

Funnily enough, it seems to work the opposite way with men.

TerfyTheCuntingTerf · 21/02/2018 15:19

It takes a certain kind of mentality to imagine that women simply stop reading and lose all sense of reason when they hit middle-age.

Or the suggestions that older women/feminists should step aside, shut up and let the younger generation have their say, which was one viewpoint I saw being put forwards a while back.

Awful, because often it's only as women get older that the scales start to fall from their eyes (and they stop giving so many shits), so it's an immensely effective way of keeping women in their 'place'.

StringOfGoldStars · 21/02/2018 15:38

Some say pansexual which is just another way of saying bisexual while others say it is pedophile. Given who is in charge of all LGB organizations these days I think the P is for predator.

Actually, pan sexuals are the luckiest of all in this whole sorry mess. It is similar to bisexual but they have no ossie with the 'gender presentation' and the biological sex not matching.

So quite happy with the lady dick and the male vagina.

Ergo, pretty much the only group who cannot be guilty of transphobia!

DodoPatrol · 21/02/2018 15:43

Has that quoted post by CoteDAzur been deleted, as I can't see her addressing someone called 'Olive' anywhere recently? I'd assumed Charlotte was at least having a grumble at something that had been said in the past week or so, not back in 2008.

LangCleg · 21/02/2018 15:48

I'm sure most trans ideology proponents including Charlotte, are perfectly nice and well-meaning people.

But the truth is that they are shilling a regressive ideology that reproduces every axis of oppression - not just sex, but also class and race - going and which results in middle/upper class, white males even more entrenched at the top of the power pyramid than they already are. All it does is let the ones who used to wear women's clothes in private wear them in public now too. It is not even a movement to liberate actually dysphoric people, let alone the rest of us.

I speak plainly. I have no interest in pussy footing around an ideology whose end point is a society in which the hyper-privileged play at body hacking via endo-tech and newfangled surgeries in a fruitless quest for authenticity while the rest of us labour at shit jobs in shit housing with a shit public safety net.

And if the evangelical among the pomos want to say that makes me a bigot - they're welcome to go ahead. I couldn't give a toss.

terfsRus · 21/02/2018 15:54

What's with the emoji OD in the TRAs twitter feeds?
That's peak transed me all over again

MyBeloved · 21/02/2018 16:01

Wow! That's the first time I have ever been quoted in a blog. AND it was my first Feminism Board post!

Oh, I've never been called a bigot before either. If you knew my family situation you'd realise how laughable that is.

I am simply concerned about the very few rights we have as women, being pushed aside by a vocal minority in a very dangerous way.

Transphobic? I think not.

The blog reads pretty well, but Charlotte has done what we all did at that age of not actually reading AND understanding what is being said. I know my actual comprehension went out of the window when i thought I was right and eloquent about something as a passionate, maturing child in that awful inbetween age.

Charlotte's view is definitely not indicative of the youth I know, who are all concerned about this as many of them have friends who will also be directly impacted if self id becomes the 'reality'

bombadino · 21/02/2018 16:08

So well put - exactly what I've been trying to express. Thanks.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 21/02/2018 16:11

No I don't think we GOT stupid. I think we always were. And that's why we were oppressed. Back in the day. Whereas youngsters would never let that happen to them. So there!

and then you get pregnant and hey presto! Turns out biology and sex discrimination are things after all. Who knew?

bombadino · 21/02/2018 16:16

Well socialised young women might consider ever greater degrees of tolerance as signs of achieving their proper adult role

IfNot · 21/02/2018 16:26

Mnhq...WHY was my post deleted?

This paragraph made me properly LOL when I realised my mistake. I read it as:

”I speak plainly. I have no interest in pussy” because of the way the line break fell and the saw the next line was part of the sentence. God, I don’t even know why I’m posting this. Mid week delirium...

LangCleg · 21/02/2018 22:19

Haha. I aim to please. Even including line breaks.

Gacapa · 21/02/2018 22:35

I love Hope. And she's been to a vegan BBQ which is another big TRA no no now appaz...

whoputthecatout · 21/02/2018 22:54

Charlotte is to transgender what adolescents were to CND in the 50s (the cause du jour when I was a teen). Let's just chuck those nasty nuclear weapons away, smile sweetly at the Russians and naturally they will do the same.

Different debate, same argument. We can all make the world a happy clappy place if we are really really nice.

In a way it will be sad for her when reality sets in.

iBiscuit · 22/02/2018 00:03

Me too, Gacapa Smile

OlennasWimple · 22/02/2018 02:19

Hope Lye sounds cool - broadening the bandwidth of what it means to be male Wink

I'm not sure whether to be pleased or cross that I wasn't quoted in that blog...

I peaked my elderly mum in about 3 seconds at the weekend. I told her that the Labour Party were removing all-women shortlists. She said, what! why, we don’t have enough women in politics?
I said, well they’ve changed it so anyone who says they are a woman can be on an all-women shortlist now.
Mum: but that’s not an all-women shortlist.
Me: You said it.
Mum: But if this was an official Labour policy then the party would have to have had a proper vote of their members on this. It would have been reported all over the news if they just did something that offensive to women, wouldn’t it?
...PEAK!
