Was Greer Right When She Said Men Hate Women?

I have just skim read The Female Eunuch and like everyone else, the stand out line to me was that men hate us but we aren't aware of the extent, and neither are they!!

Do you think this is true?? My DH, my late father and my brother, all immensely like/d and love/d the women in their lives. I hate to think it is true, but if it is, I want to know! I want to know my enemy.

I have never FELT hated....maybe I am in denial! I have surrounded myself with amazing, loyal women and a DH who happily declares he dislikes other men and likes women a whole lot more!! So I find it hard to agree with Greer but something tells me she is right and I am wrong!!

It doesn't mean that every single man hates women. It's about how patriarchy and male privilege embed themselves into men (yes all of them) and how this manifests to greater and lesser degrees.
Your male family members surely love you a lot. Mine do to. But they don't view me exactly the way they view each other.

Upsetting content below -

Just today I read two stories that exemplify the extent of how this can manifest in the most toxic and hateful way. A teenager raped a 41 year old woman with a car jack. Extended it and killed her. The second story was another teenager who gave a young woman drugs and raped her as she was unconscious. He joked about not knowing if she was alive or dead when he came in her. He then left her to die because he was too tired to take her to A&E.

I'm sorry those two stories are so disturbing. They are just examples I read today. I don't think it's wise to turn away from news like this. We can't ignore what's happening to women all over the world.

Do they completely lack analytical, cogent, precise and logical thinking skills, or what? For men to HATE one half of the human race, based on nothing whatsoever apart from other thick men telling them to, tells me they are exceptionally half-baked, insensate and unintelligent.

Once you've victimised or exploited someone (or a class of someones) you have to hate them and blame them and dehumanise them, or how do you live with yourself?

I didn’t use to think it was true, but the more I hear and read of the most hideous violence used against women, all across the world, the more convinced I am that Greer was right on the money. A shame that so many women are complicit in this hatred too.

I found helping the enslaved women is the key. I spent several visits with a relative, refusing to engage with them if they recounted examples of how horrible women are. Every time they put women down, I ended the visit. I explained that they hate themselves as much as the woman they complain about. Eventually they stood up to a male relative, after I stood up to him, he put her down her whole life. He knows he is no longer in charge and we are all on a level field.

I honestly think that what we’re seeing is a new generation of young men (now in their twenties) whose brains are addled by the 24/7 availability of increasingly violent, misogynistic porn. And by online radicalisation through MRA and incel forums.

Men have many many stories they tell one another down through the generations about women to justify their unjust behavior.
They still teach contempt for women in all the schools, if they still teach Aristotle, and in the churches they teach the 1st rule of misogyny: That women are responsible for what men do.
Men would have to stop killing us for a generation before they could give themselves a break from all their literature justifying killing us.

Would you listen even if I pointed out it’s a minority of men that do that.
What I’m maybe suggesting is that there are violent people, regardless of sex. Some have an advantage of causing more damage than others. If women where physically stronger than men do you think that the violent amongst you would be taking advantage of that?
But to say ALL men hate women, well that’s just pathetic.

It's not a minority of men......every scathing comment from a man about how a woman looks, acts is violence. Every man that assaults a woman or stands by without doing anything is violence. It's everywhere, you just don't want to see it.

I often think of Greer's quote when I read about something particularly evil a man (or men) has inflicted on women or girls ( the recent reports about the poor woman who died after being raped with a carjack and the Oxfam abuse spring to mind).

Realistically though I don't think most men go through life hating women but I do think a good majority don't respect women as being equally human as themselves. Lack of respect can very easily turn to hate under the right conditions.

The internet and online porn has definitely exacerbated the above in the last decade or so.

I also think what the internet has done is made women very aware of how disrespected they are. Prior to sites like 4chan and reddit and prior to social media things that men say about women was largely not done in the company of women - think Trump's 'locker room talk'.

I get the impression many men now, especially the younger ones forget that women exist on the internet (I believe that's a bit of a meme in itself).

So when they are making rape jokes, discussing fapping off to stolen celebrity nudes or in the case of some TRA's talking about how they want to murder us and use our decapitated heads as sex toys they forget that we see them, we are listening - young women, older women, mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, girlfriends, grandmothers. We can all see them showing us who they really are.
