...please could I ask exactly what was your lightbulb moment? What did you hear or read that pushed you to our alpine slopes?

WiseUp I know this is cruel but i'm glad you are feeling my rage grin I carry this around with me all the time. Shall I pour us both a big gin?

Ooh yes please. The world has gone completely fucking bonkers.

I work in the technical section of largely female-dominated healthcare profession where there really is something approaching equality of opportunity, and I don’t encounter sexism in the workplace, apart from occasionally being patronised by engineers who never try it twice...

I know and care for quite a lot of L, G and presumably B people, and had extended a kind of bonhommie towards unknown T people because I’ve always been gender critical (but had no words to describe it)...

I was busy worrying about the health of loved ones, Brexit, whether the Orange Loon will start WW3, and the NHS dissolving before our eyes...

....and now the bubble has burst and I find I’m a TERF, and most likely everyone hates me.

And I’m working tomorrow so I can’t have any more wine sobs into empty glass

This thread moved fast! Riverside It was somewhere I had to be professional so I said I wear trousers most days and moved swiftly on.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 07/02/2018 20:54

The magnificent and incomparable Magdalen Berns.

And the fact she had been kicked out of the the Uni LGBT group for the whole cotton ceiling crap

Followed v swiftly by learning about autogynephylia

And who could forget Reilly Dennis - the unrivalled master of peaktrans

Caitlin Jenner going by "Bruce" when she wants to use all the facilities of the golf course. Fuck's sake.

Weebo · 07/02/2018 21:01

The recent Guardian article about the transwoman prisoner going on hunger strike.

The angle that they chose to portray frightened me.

I have no problem with using preferred pronouns and will always lend my support to the innocent trans people in this whole mess who just want to get on with their lives.

But I will never support anything that comes at the expense of women's/girls rights - It's always at our expense. I've just had enough of that.

Notonyournellly · 07/02/2018 21:06

duncandonut that was a wtf moment for me too. So unfair. The point I peaked properly was reading an article by Janice Turner about children being allowed hormone treatment which caused them to become infertile.

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:06

With me it was the changing room ruling. I’ve been reading threads on MN since then and feel increasingly horrified and vulnerable.

I saw a comment underneath a Guardian news story today that referred to ‘all men/cis/transgender people...’. Not ‘all men/women/transgender people...’ It felt so dismissive and scary to see this - like someone has turned the clocks back and hasn’t bothered to tell them. 😟

Sorry, I can’t remember who said it, or where.

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:07

Sorry that should have said ‘turned the clocks back for women...

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:08

‘And hasn’t bothered to tell us... ConfusedBlush

Weebo · 07/02/2018 21:11

I have recently fallen utterly and unabashedly in love with Magdalen Berns. :o

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 07/02/2018 21:21

I think I peaktransed in about 1985 looking at drag queens and thinking 'but that's not what women are like'

But it's more of a Himalayan ridge than a peak innit? I feel positively cosy about old style transvestites now...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/02/2018 21:24

I think like so many others it was MN that did it for me. The Spartacus threads (18 months ago?) were probably my turning point, after some months of unease about the issue. I'm most bothered about how this is affecting children and teenagers. 4th Wave Now and Lily Maynard have taught me a lot. Until very recently I wouldn't even have used the word feminist about myself either! I was born in the 60s and grew up through the 70s naively thinking most of the battles were on their way to being won. Oh dear.

tobee · 07/02/2018 21:31

Well probably mumsnet. But actually, I'm pleased to say, my 18 year old ds.He's been banging on about it quite quietly for ages. He's a man by the way. Always has been.

But it seems to fit in with the world today. It's all a bit fucked, isn't it? Trump and Brexit and Corbyn being hailed as God. Ideological cultish madness. I thought that was supposed to be the domain of Isis and North Korea? It's seems to be every where. But heavily laced with no freedom of speech and violence SadAngry

HawkeyeInConfusion · 07/02/2018 21:37

For me it was an MN thread about the potential implications for girls with ASD. I am recently diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and for most of my youth there was some element of wanting to be a boy, having interests that were more 'typical of boys', getting on better with boys. The implications for children like I was is terrifying.

I would point out that I am now perfectly content to be a woman.

HeyRoly · 07/02/2018 22:04

A transwoman friend guided me to my peak trans moment. An old FB friend who initially I was supportive of (and, indeed, unsurprised by their transition because they'd cross dressed since uni days) but as time went on I found myself increasingly irked by their misogynistic jokes, uber macho hobbies and hatred of children. In fact, if you hadn't known who this person was and just took their posts at face value, you would be under no illusion that this was a bloke.

I was confused by how one could have a ladybrain and still be so, well, "laddish".

Then I learned of autogynephilia and everything made sense. They are a textbook autogynephile. And then I felt duped and angry.

Several people (unconnected to this TW) deleted me from Facebook when I said "female is not a feeling". I'd love to know what they think now. I rather suspect they still congratulate themselves on their inclusivity and liberal feminism and virtue signalling.

initially women's sport and how it was being hijacked....

then autogynephilia ... and especially reading about young lesbians being bullied for not wanting to be with transwomen.... no safe lesbian places free of lady dicks.....

isthistoonosy · 07/02/2018 22:17

Cant remember her name bit the female fighter beaten up by a trans.
And cross fit taking a stand against men deciding to compete as women.

FannyWisdom · 07/02/2018 22:22

I've mostly avoided the topic.
Knowing fuck all about it and assuming that these days evidence and facts would come into any decision making.
Then the same old nastiness became too obvious and people like Caitlin and IW were eagerly pushed out as examples.

Then I realised about AGP and now...

OvaHere · 07/02/2018 22:34

One heartening thing to note is how many women are now engaged with this.

A couple of years ago any threads on Fem Chat about this were sparsely populated by a few posters and threads in AIBU and Chat turned into fights with the majority yelling bigot.

The ratios have changed. A lot.

MyOwnShed · 07/02/2018 22:42

Mine was the 'first female front line soldier' too. In fact DH got the just before me, announcing it with a 'what the fuck?', no issue with trans but we know women who would have applied for that role and been good at it if they had been allowed. But they weren't.

Weebo · 07/02/2018 22:44

I'll hold my hand up to being one of the yellers back then.

But when you're wrong, your wrong. There's no point in holding on to a lie because it makes you feel uncomfortable/guilty.

I'm still battling with myself because I know that innocent trans people are getting hurt in all of this.

I just have to keep reminding myself that it's the actions of the TRA's who are causing that hurt.

Hecalledmecarrots · 07/02/2018 22:46

I first woke up during the Rio Olympics and the discussion over the threat to women’s sport.

Mumsnet has educated me thoroughly since Flowers

Recent peak trans - Lily Madigan and their appointment as a Labour constituent women’s officer.

The Peak Trans threads on the Gender Critical sub on Reddit are just jaw dropping. They’re on number VI now (and counting). Well worth a read but best arm yourself with a stiff gin.

OvaHere · 07/02/2018 22:48

That's good to hear Weebo because it means it's not a lost cause if people are willing to change their view with increasing evidence that harm is being done. Flowers

WitchIwasaWitch18 · 07/02/2018 22:58

I was one who avoided this area and found the trans thing boring and unbelievable. I was wrong. Sorry.

This is outrageous, insidious and I'm with the ones wanting some bloody sense to be regained. And women's spaces to remain penis free.
