...please could I ask exactly what was your lightbulb moment? What did you hear or read that pushed you to our alpine slopes?

There seem to be conflicting accounts Fekko

I'm a tad confused

Due to her sexual identity. What the fuck is going on with the world. A judge that doesn't understand the difference between sex and gender.

The world is mad.

purple12 · 14/02/2018 19:11

I don't think I had a 'lightbulb' moment but a very good friend of mine who is very involved politically as a strong feminist and who I respect enormously raised some issues with me that I hadn't really thought of particularly. Then, I began paying a bit more attention to some of the conversations on Twitter and realising that I felt increasingly uncomfortable and I'm very glad to have found this board too. I feel like I'm just at the 'beginning' stage..

OvaHere · 14/02/2018 19:30

Welcome purple there is a lot to take in at the beginning so do ask questions. Wine or Gin is also useful!

I've just remembered one of my earliest peak trans (how little did I realise what was to come). It was the Michigan Womyns Fest (MichFest) being shut down due to pressure from TRAs. They had some issues for a few years and eventually the organisers shut it down rather than be consumed by TRAs.

I think this was 5 or 6 years ago now and it really started some alarms ringing about what was happening.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 14/02/2018 21:40

I feel it was less of a peak and more of a mountain range Gin

I think the abuse that Jenni Murray and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received for stating basic facts started it for me. Before that I've read the trans threads here on Feminist Chat and think God are they bangging on about this again? But that made me see thinngs differently. Around the same time I was watching The Big Questions one lazy Sunday morning of all things and the discussion was 'do we have the right to choose our own gender' which crystalised things for me.
Since then, I've joined Twitter and everytime I think I've seen it all I see something even more ludicrous.
Munroe Bergdorf telling us not to talk about biology
Morgane Oder using political status to start a witch hunt against feminists
India Willougby being a typical male chauvenist pig
Lily Madigan where to start!
BAME women being a 'type' of woman and the outstanding racism
Lesbians being bigot and the general homophobia
It's all so obviously MRA with lipstick

thebewilderness · 14/02/2018 21:48

Because this won't happen in the UK.
If self ID is codified into law then it can't happen in the UK because it will be a self identified woman wanking in the loo while watching a girl and far as I know that is not illegal in the UK, is it?

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 14/02/2018 21:53

But so much of this new wave of transgenderism when male born really have no intent of any meaningful transition seems to be so rooted in pornography and opportunism bewilderness.
I think you'd have to be very naive to think that some men wouldn't use Self ID to take advantage of women only spaces.

WiggyPig · 15/02/2018 09:15

MrGHardy my money is on the Sun misreporting it, not the judge failing to know the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity.

The decision there was quite right (I'm assuming it was an employment tribunal). Of course a huge company is obliged to protect its employees from discrimination, harassment or victimisation on the basis of protected characteristics, including gender reassignment.

BlindAssassin1 · 15/02/2018 10:55

The car-crash that is the Labour Party and the complete lack of concern that swathes of women will have no one to vote for.

The cotton ceiling and the violent erasure and side-lining of lesbians and lesbian spaces.

The turning away from biological fact and bat shit linguistic redefinitions. Its like we're actually in 1984, yes is no and no is yes. Women can have pansies, cis as a sub category of 'woman' ..... and if you question it you're a bigot and you need re-educating. See Michael Rossen on Word of Mouth (bbc r4) the other day. Not once did he, who is so normally logical and insightful, question critically the patronising lecture being dished out. He just stumbled around the issue like a dinosaur.

The rise of handmaidens in more places. Like an FB enviro group I'm in demanding we use gender neutral language even when talking about periods and moon cups. There is such desperation to be right-on with this, trans is the current darling topic but if you're going to throw yourself under the bus like a fucking martyr, you're not taking me with you.

I ignorantly thought that feminism was winning and fell out the loop of things for years. Literally the last few weeks and days I've switched it up from waffty liberal feminism to Rad Fem thinking. Battle lines have been redrawn.

DodoPatrol · 15/02/2018 12:05

Pansies, BlindAssassin? Are we being flower-exclusionary now?

(great book, by the way.)

BlindAssassin1 · 15/02/2018 12:19

Pansies, pansies for everyone! Flowers

OldmanOfTheWeb · 15/02/2018 12:33

I could list several because every time I think I've reached Peak Trans I come across a whole new yet taller mountain.

The first was probably seeing Germaine Greer get death threats from "Feminists". Another was reading through the terfisaslur website in growing horror. And a third would be seeing Pink News do an article in favour of a man who wanted to be transferred to a women's prison. He was, of course, violent and in for a string of sex offences including breaking into young girl's bedrooms and masturbating with their underwear. Then there are minor plateaus such as Caitlin Jenner telling the "amusing" story of how he was caught by his ten year old daughter wrapping her underwear around his penis. Which at the time I considered an isolated incident rather than seeing the pattern.

Frankly, there have been so many by this point that whilst I still respect anyone's right to dress how they please and am supportive of people with actual Gender Dysphoria (as opposed to the autogynephile fetishists who make up so many of the new crowd), I find it hard to recall how I was ever so unquestioning of the trans narrative.

OvaHere · 15/02/2018 13:01

I find it hard to recall how I was ever so unquestioning of the trans narrative.

So many people start off from that unquestioning point because the trans movement has so effectively benefitted from using GD transsexual people and the association with LGB rights. People actively want to be right on and progressive and not be against something they think of like gay rights.

Of course it's not like gay rights at all but that requires media reporting to be honest and people to dig beneath the surface. Which most don't currently.

sportinguista · 15/02/2018 18:24

I think DH has definitely hit peak trans today. It was the breastfeeding story that did it. He thinks it's akin to a form of madness. He too equated it all with the old school transexuals, he is slowly realising this is a rather new kind of shit storm.

thebewilderness · 15/02/2018 18:54

The LGB community is beginning to realize that trangendering away the Gay and Lesbians is the homophobic left wing version of the homophobic right wing's conversion therapy.

Ollycat · 15/02/2018 19:19

I peaked a while back - the Lauren Jeska case I think but today I’m soooo infuriated by LM’s comments on Twitter talking about “sadness when I see all cis women politics panels” - wtaf!!! I’m so fucking mad about this plus her failing to see the bloody wrongness in mtf competing in women’s sports. She is supposed to be a women’s officer but appears to actively hate women to the point of wanting their erasure PLUS (sorry am ranting) all she fucking does is post stupid puerile mean girls memes on twitter- that’s not politics love it’s crap teenage self indulgence- they have no qualities their only thing is that they are trans.

Ollycat · 15/02/2018 19:20

and don’t even get me started on no platforming ...

Ollycat · 15/02/2018 19:26

Oh and the “literal violence “ - it’s not literal violence it’s words expressing a different opinion - literal violence is attacking a 60 year old woman!

JustHooking · 15/02/2018 19:38

Lila Perry was my first. The mothers were called bigots for not wanting their daughters to share the school changing room with 18 year old Lila
Lila had refused a seperate changing room or a curtained area in the girls changing room.
Lila spoke to TV cameras whilst wearing a short, grey school skirt with a semi erection swinging freely beneath the skirt
I was thinking am I the only person seeing that!

TheLesserOfTwoWeevils · 15/02/2018 19:57

I play a female dominated sport. On a Facebook group somebody asked for advice on how their league can be more inclusive when advertising open games to potential participants. Normally games are women's, men's or mixed. Somebody seriously suggested we should just have two categories and use the wording 'men' and 'non-men'. So effectively erasing women from a women's sport.

Yay progress.

And when a rape survivor said that being in close proximity to people she didn't know with male bodies would be extremely triggering for her, she got told that was her problem and she needed to get help for it and not take part in this sport until she'd gotten over her bigotry. 😡

powershowerforanhour · 15/02/2018 20:10

The reporting of the Lauren Jeska case...completely failing to mention the massive elephant in the room that was central to the case. The lack of freedom of the press was sinister.

Also, the inequality of it all with women, as usual, at the bottom of the heap. Lesbians are expected to suck TIM cock but straight men are not expected to validate them in this way. TIFs are expected to be so repulsed by their disgusting female anatomy that they are encouraged to refer to their "front hole" (just an ugly, reductive term that shows what a lot of male TIMs believe a vagina is- just a bare empty hole to be fucked) but TIMs are not encouraged to be ashamed of their penis or avoid referring to it as such- it's de rigeur to be proud of your big swinging ladydick now.

LeslieKnopefan · 16/02/2018 02:30

I think the first time I even read about extreme transgender thinking was when people were protesting against Germaine Greer. My concern about universities and banning speakers would take up another thread but it’s the first time I started reading more.

BlooperReel · 16/02/2018 06:29

Quite a few things in terms of events but on the whole its the ultra agressiveness at anyone who dares question the orthodoxy. All it took for me to be called a TERF was to say i reject the label cis.
