Do you think some of the driver for "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" is to do with bad science teaching in the US?

Just reading this thread on Reddit and loads of the posts are very scientifically naive. I can't decide if posters are being disingenuous or are just very uneducated about basic science.
It got me wondering whether the American thing of teaching creationism as equally valid a theory as evolution has generally undermined science and critical thinking.

SSR- er, what part of my post did you interpret as that I "would rather my child was dead"? What a ridiculous and callous reply, do you have children? I don't lie to my girls. I tell them the truth- You can wear masculine or feminine clothing, you can climb trees, have long or short hair, put on makeup or never wear any. You can be amazing at science and maths. None of these things makes you male or female. That ship has sailed at conception.

A child having the courage to come out to their parent, who they trust and love more than anyone in the world, only to be turned away, is not going to be happy. Easy enough to comprehend, you already know the rates of trans suicides are absolutely through the roof.

As a woman, what are your suggestions for keeping autogynephiles away from women and children's intimate spaces? Do you agree with India Willoughby that there should be a distinction between them and transsexuals, and that they should not be included under the trans umbrella?

FerdinandsRevenge · 07/04/2017 14:09

I'm not old ssr, I still understand how babies are made. My 5 year old does.

Floggingmolly · 07/04/2017 14:10

Men will not turn into women just for the asking at any time. It's really not just a matter of being less small minded Confused. It cannot happen.

That's exactly what I've been saying.

Damn. If you'd have told me that when I was 10 my life would be so much easier! Thanks for blowing my mind with your intellect.

Plunkette · 07/04/2017 14:12

Erm, just to poke my nose in on behalf of American teachers...

My DC are currently attending a state elementary school in Texas.

The science teaching is excellent. Far, far superior to what they were receiving in their (excellent) British school.

They have a dedicated, fully equipped science Laboratory within the school and the children do practical experiments as well as learn theory.

My DC haven't heard a prayer in school or sung a hymn in school since they left the UK.

MNers need to be more careful but saying "Americans do this" or "Americans believe this".

It's a huge country and there are massive differences between states.

Datun · 07/04/2017 14:12

And how do you think that should be implemented?

CharlieSierra · 07/04/2017 14:13

I'm not a weak and pathetic creature, I'm a woman who understands and has experienced being oppressed and discriminated against under patriarchy (due to belonging to the sex class female) and who is opposed to the loss of rights won by my feminist foremothers. At the moment the trans rights agenda appears to directly conflict with the interests of women. I don't think trans people should experience discrimination either, but I don't think that acknowledging that changing biological sex is impossible equates to discrimination, and I won't collude in a massive Orwellian experiment. Plus you are a goady fucker, read up the arguments which have been made countless times and goodbye.

FlaviaAlbia · 07/04/2017 14:16

Datun from the few extreme religious families I've encountered and I mean the "dinosaurs didn't exist, the Bible is literally true" type, being gay is a sin and abomination. There isn't a way past it, it will never be accepted.

Trans, or "being born in the wrong body" isn't expressly forbidden and seems to be a way around it as far as I can see...

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 14:16

And how do you think that should be implemented?

I think TERF's should get a grip and being so generally horrible to the trans community as if we're all child molesters out to get them. It's simply immoral. Then when they realise that there's actually a difference between the two, they'll be a little more understanding.

CharlieSierra · 07/04/2017 14:19

That's the second TERF, which is an offensive term. Reported.

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 14:20

Define what 'changing biological sex' is.

I'll ignore your last sentence. Smile take some breaths, don't lose your temper now.

FerdinandsRevenge · 07/04/2017 14:21

Definitely Plunkette !

It's actually a big problem for me now as I'm passing two primary schools to take my children to school to avoid them going to a religious school here in the UK. It's incredibly difficult for an American who went through the public school system to get their head around that and the lack of school buses

Has this man changed species or merely modified some parts of his body to appear catlike?

CharlieSierra · 07/04/2017 14:24

Tediously explaining reality to fuckwits

FerdinandsRevenge · 07/04/2017 14:25

Excluding trans people from where? I have no problem with TM in the bathrooms with me. Also like with CIS I don't want to be defined by something I'm not and something I don't believe in.

You might as well call me a Santa Denier.

Datun · 07/04/2017 14:25

Your posts are quite goady, rude and use specious arguments.

However, no one thinks that gender dysphoria doesn't exist. Everyone knows it's crippling.

It should be treated with any means possible, including surgery if it alleviates the symptoms.

But a man having gender dysphoria is not the definition of a woman.

There is also no way to make a distinction between a man with gender dysphoria and a cross dressing fetishist.

It is also your common or garden cross dresser who stands to gain the most from making this argument political.

Women say no thanks.

You can't redefine the word woman and we don't want to open our doors to every perv in the land in order to validate a handful of transsexuals.

It's a very simple argument.

Leave women alone and we will support you. Go after us and we won't.

FerdinandsRevenge · 07/04/2017 14:26

I think Tiger boy actually passes better than Riley FWIW

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 14:26

You must be really ignorant to try that card, science and psychology back up the reality that being transgender is real, you can't be a fucking cat.

venusinscorpio · 07/04/2017 14:26

No SSR. She wouldn't exclude you from feminism, as a transman as you are biologically female. Feminism is for you whether you appreciate it or not. So she is not "trans exclusionary".

Floggingmolly · 07/04/2017 14:26

Define what changing biological sex is? Seriously??

SirVixofVixHall · 07/04/2017 14:27

SSR The whole " tell someone what they want to believe or they'll kill themselves" thing seems abusive to me, especially as it is usually used to shut down any referrence to sex, and to terrify parents, as you are trying to do here. Your use of "as you know" is odd, is that to present this as an absolute fact? Because a) the facts on trans-suicide rates are debatable, and b) you have no way of knowing what I do, or don't know, about suicide.

FerdinandsRevenge · 07/04/2017 14:27

If I accepted the LGBTIQAFGHJK spectrum I'd define as non binary but to do so I'd have to agree that some people are hopelessly boring and binary. I'm not a twat like that. I assume we're all special snoflakes.
