Do you think some of the driver for "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" is to do with bad science teaching in the US?

Just reading this thread on Reddit and loads of the posts are very scientifically naive. I can't decide if posters are being disingenuous or are just very uneducated about basic science.
It got me wondering whether the American thing of teaching creationism as equally valid a theory as evolution has generally undermined science and critical thinking.

interesting. One poster is repeatedly deleted (I can only assume these posts contained even grosser misogyny than in those allowed to stand) but we are all cautioned to recall talk guidelines.

Perhaps Mumsnet could clarify further- my addled housewife brain can't understand. Perhaps I ought to watch my kids do karate, I am given to understand it would sort out my menopausal symptoms

Hmm
AssassinatedBeauty · 07/04/2017 17:54

Everyone is posting within talk guidelines apart from one poster. I agree that a general reminder seems a bit OTT. I do hope that MNHQ have explained to that poster what was problematic about their posts.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 07/04/2017 17:57

Hmm homophobia, disablist, victim blaming, sexist - we're on the way to a full bingo card from one poster and yet we get a general warning.

Please let the thread stand, MNHQ.

It should be very clear where the abuse has come from, and if you delete everything and issue a general warning, it's at risk of getting used as ammo once again in the "FWR is transphobic" campaign. You've only deleted one poster, so I'm not sure it's fair to categorise it as a bunfight...?

Datun · 07/04/2017 18:01

I'm not sure they can single one poster by name, to be honest. I think the fact that their posts have been deleted speaks for itself.

Datun · 07/04/2017 18:04

I was oscillating between thinking this is an MRA, transwoman, a transman.

They argued like an MRA with all the inherent misogyny, but would then argue from a transman's point of view.

If that was someone born female, it's disturbing, to say the least.

I think that SS may have left the building (such a shame :( I was really learning some True Facts from them)

Shall we get back to the actual discussion? Grin

Sorry, references to sperm are probably transphobic. I apologise.

BeyondUser24601 · 07/04/2017 18:45

DH has just informed me his semen is gender fluid, so it's okay 😂

Spunk Grin

Datun · 07/04/2017 18:47

The OP has started another thread to avoid derail. I believe it is currently a spunk-free zone.

venusinscorpio · 07/04/2017 20:10

I do find it fascinating how SSR realises that they can't expect to use the men's toilets. But we are expected to welcome TW into ours.

Hear hear, Rogue

RogueBiscuit · 07/04/2017 21:10

Come on mumsnet. My comment wasn't against any guidelines at all. Yet you've allowed one particular poster to repeatedly troll this thread, insulting people and using offensive language.

How come my opinion that many trans people are mentally ill (which is a fact by the way) has been deleted, yet a poster calling people terfs and fucking nonces is ok ?

Does the poster get a free pass because she thinks she's a man ?

QuentinSummers · 07/04/2017 21:13

rogue I think ssr is banned

If you are here mn, I am curious why "handicapped" was deleted, but "morons" wasn't?

BMacklin · 07/04/2017 22:18

Well that was all very, um, interesting.

CharlieSierra · 07/04/2017 22:52

Have you seen this? Not sure where to put it so....

Charlie do you think it's likely that Jeni Harvey is on mn? Wink

BMacklin · 08/04/2017 07:36

Charlie copy onto the "until we organise like the trans. .." thread you were on the other day too, if you haven't already.

FerdinandsRevenge · 08/04/2017 07:37

Good blog, if she is in here I hope she realises it links to a no longer active website which is a shame as I'd like to read more

FerdinandsRevenge · 08/04/2017 07:43

m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/4845549

Actually reading her post here from three years ago she was using 'cis' and referring to the way feminism let down trans women in the past. Is everyone just peak transing? Will 2017 be the year of peak trans?
