Do you think some of the driver for "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" is to do with bad science teaching in the US?

Just reading this thread on Reddit and loads of the posts are very scientifically naive. I can't decide if posters are being disingenuous or are just very uneducated about basic science.
It got me wondering whether the American thing of teaching creationism as equally valid a theory as evolution has generally undermined science and critical thinking.

I do suspect the tide might be turning. The BBC documentary about transing kids seems to have made a lot of people pause and think. And once you start actually thinking about any part of it, the whole mess unravels because it makes no sense.

CharlieSierra · 08/04/2017 22:34

Ooh Nellooo she may well be. If she is I really appreciated the article and shared and retweeted it.

Barcoo2 · 09/04/2017 00:58

What a great article.

AnotherQuoll · 09/04/2017 06:24

Australians aren't allowed to see that documentary. Transactivists have decided. So, after weeks of advertising, the ABC (govt owned national broadcaster, like BBC) pulled it just hours before it was to air, tweeting that it's "reviewing" decision to show it because of "concerns"... "TBD". It may never air at all.

TinyRick · 09/04/2017 06:29

Wow really? That's disappointing. I thought that the ABC were better than that. Thankfully I watched it online.

Re Australia - I don't know how 'respectable' the Courier Mail is, or how widely read, but I stumbled across this (published yesterday):

www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/minority-of-children-with-gender-issues-diagnosed-with-gender-dysphoria-psychiatrist-says/news-story/2d8a6725d98e5f5bf3f7e5e9eb99d065. I've cut and pasted the start of the article below.

Minority of children with gender issues diagnosed with gender dysphoria, psychiatrist says
Kay Dibben, The Courier-Mail
April 8, 2017 1:17pm

MANY children and adolescents are identifying as transgender because they are confused about sexuality or think it will make them “different”.

Psychiatrist Dr Stephen Stathis, who runs a gender clinic, said he had seen girls who had been sexually abused and wanted to identify as transgender.

“The girls say, ‘If only I had been a male I wouldn’t have been abused’,’’ Dr Stathis said.

He said the new statewide gender service at Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital expected to see about 180 children with gender issues this year, but only a minority would be diagnosed with gender dysphoria.

Dr Stathis said by the time they reached puberty, most of those identify as their birth gender.

Gender dysphoria is a strong, persistent feeling of identification with the opposite gender and discomfort with one’s own assigned gender.

He said he had seen a lot of adolescents “trying out being transgender” to stand out.

“One said to me, ‘Dr Steve ... I want to be transgender, it’s the new black’,” he said.

Well, this is interesting.

I've had my first ever MN deletion on this thread.

But it wasn't made at the time that part of the thread was active on Friday.

Someone tidied it up late yesterday or today. Making my comment above about only one person being deleted on the thread a nonsense - I had not been deleted before that. And my comment was deleted some time after SSR had left the thread. It was a slightly unkind comment, made after repeated provocation, and arguably maybe it deserved a deletion. But did it need it 24 hours after the initial MNHQ intervention?

Interesting.

BeyondUser24601 · 09/04/2017 16:58

Oo gosh, two deleted posts for me too!! Been a while since I've had any of them Shock

I can remember what they both said too, which makes a change for me and my scatty brain Grin

BeyondUser24601 · 09/04/2017 17:00

If I paraphrase, this might be okay to stand?

Both referred to my inability to believe ssr was being entirely honest with us about their personal life.

Datun · 10/04/2017 00:28

This 15-year-old boy says he is female. No puberty blockers, no hormones, no surgery. Now running on the girls' track team.

Andraya is brave to pioneer the path for other transgender students and athletes.

Andraya is also courageous to endure the criticisms of those who would say she has an unfair biological advantage in physical strength and muscle mass.

I'm not sure if this is due to 'bad science'. The acceptance of it might be, but he is just plain ole cheating.

"He is considering sexual reassignment surgery to transition to female and plans to take puberty and hormone blockers."

Pallisers · 10/04/2017 00:36

Yawn.

Everything on MN eventually gets blamed on "the americans"

Most of cutting edge scientific research is still happening in US universities.

CharlieSierra · 10/04/2017 07:45

Pooch I thought hmm, interesting - then I realised that the troll person who was offensive and deleted throughout the thread, hadn't been banned after all. Unfortunately. And odd, since there are people on Twitter who have been banned for far less. It looks like anyone can be as persistently rude and offensive as they like to feminists and women generally but calling a spade man a spade man evokes the ban hammer every time.

Datun · 10/04/2017 08:47

CharlieSierra

I'm pretty certain that person has been banned. At least under that username.

CharlieSierra · 10/04/2017 13:38

Maybe I'm mistaken then, I thought they were back posting on the AIBU thread yesterday evening.

Scrumplestiltskin · 10/04/2017 13:57

SSR was such a brilliant example of the average trans activist.

BeyondUser24601 · 10/04/2017 14:05

They were certainly a good example of someone who argues against the "mn feminist" perspective, without looking at or having a clue of what that perspective actually is!!

CharlieSierra · 10/04/2017 18:43

Oh I'm confused between SSR and another goady fucker poster, sorry!
