This is for everyone who knows what has happened and wants to chat about what will come next

Spoilers Space

I think that a lot of the next one will be in Grimauld place.

Sirius' brother is the person who stole the Locket (idea pinched from a clever mate of mine)

Dumbledore ordered Sirius to 'do the deed' and Sirius is a triple agent

I still think Percy Weasly will turn out to be a 'good egg'

Another good idea stolen from someone else is that part of Vodermorts soul is held in Harry's scar!!!! Damn clever that I thought!!!

Spoiler for people who read from the bottom, so to speak!

What if voldemort inadvertantly made Harry/scar a horcrux?

And dumbledore has guessed as much, (hence a lot of emphasis on him being valuable) but voldemort doesn't realise? Maybe part of the final battle being voldemort realising to kill harry is to kill himself?

MrsDoolittle · 19/07/2005 13:50

Don't think so lunavix, it's supposed to be a long and complex spell, isn't it?

SoupDragon · 19/07/2005 13:50

I believe she wrote out the plot lines for all of them right at the start and also that the ending had already been written & locked up.

Agree about the phoenix at Dumbledore's funeral. I think he'll be back.

milosmum · 19/07/2005 13:50

i just think in this book the charchers we so much more.... well teeanage- they were sarcastic, funny and sometimes really moving. i mean, yes, they stood out before but i liked them so much more in this one!

the hermione/ron thing with lavender had me laughing all the way through!

Dahlia · 19/07/2005 14:54

.......................................................................................

Oh, I like that thought, that Dumbledore has turned into a phoenix.
So - best line of the book - for me it was after Dumbledore and Harry had got away from the black lake, and out of the cave:

'I am not worried, Harry,' said Dumbledore, his voice a little stronger despite the freezing water. 'I am with you.'

Oh god, that just did it for me. But second best has to be :

'Then why,' asked Snape, 'does it have the name "Roonil Wazlib" written inside the front cover?'
I giggled for ages at that.

nerdgirl · 19/07/2005 19:53

I thought the phoenix was the ever faithful Fawkes paying his last respects and leaving Hogwarts forever which he surely wouldn't have done if Dumbledore was coming back.

I think Rowling had to get rid of Dumbledore. He was too much of a safety net for Harry. Now Harry has to face Voldemort alone and not just as the bearded-one's sidekick.

edam · 19/07/2005 20:08

Good point about the snake, soupy. Like assumednames posts too. The portrait in the headmaster's office is a reassuring thought...

alexsmum · 19/07/2005 22:01

don't agree that dumbledore will come back.i'm pretty sure that when sirius died dumbledore actually said to harry that even wizards can't come back from death. if he wasn't truly dead then his portrait wouldn't have appeared in the office. Will mcgonagall automatically become head do you think?

anyone else picked up on voldemort's name?
vol= thief
mort=death

implying i think, that he cheats death, which obviously ties in with the whole immortality schtick!
i think j.k rowling is really clever.she definitely deserves all the money!

SoupDragon · 19/07/2005 22:11

.

Wasn't the phoenix Harry glimpsed blue? I think Fawkes was gold.

happymerryberries · 19/07/2005 22:33

....................

The Times ed discussion thread on this has put forward the idea that it was the 'love' aspect of voldermorts soul that went into harry. Old Voldy has to 'kill' the love to make himself stronger.

This would tie in with Dumbledores comments that harry is stronger because he can love etc

OP posts:
marthamoo · 19/07/2005 22:35

I finished it at 1/4 to 1 this morning.

I cannot wait two years for the next one.

Enjoyed it far more than the last book which was the only one I have only read once, and the only one ds1 gave up on reading.

Going to read this thread now - it's been bugging me for days!

marthamoo · 19/07/2005 23:14

Oh lots of good stuff on this thread.

Sorry !"£$%&()_+!"£$%^&()!"£$%&()|:@~)(+++

I don't buy Harry being a horcrux either - I think Voldemort has definitely been trying to kill him (not half heartedly misleading people), plus if Harry was a horcrux then how would that tie in with one has to die for the other to survive? Harry would have to be destroyed if he was a horcrux, which would be the only way to destroy Voldemort - so they would both be dead. Can't believe JKR would have quite as bleak and ending as that. Actually (rethinking this as I type) - the horcruxes (horcruxii?!) have to be destroyed and then Voldemort himself has to be killed - Harry can't do that if he's dead himself can he? Voldemort can still survive (albeit in a weakened state) even if all his horcruxes are gone.

Also can't quite believe Dumbledore could be so wrong about Snape: there's more to that than meets the eye. I thought the "well Snape was sorry that he blabbed and got James and Lily killed" was intentionally weak and implausible. Definitely some tie in there with the binding promise spell Snape did with Draco. Maybe he'd already made one with Dumbledore which was that he wouldn't let Draco be the one to kill Dumbledore - Dumbledore was so convinced at the end that Draco was not evil and wouldn't kill him - but maybe he knew all that was going to happen and had made Snape promise to kill him rather than let Draco do it. When Harry hears Dumbledore pleading and assumes he is pleading for his life (doesn't Dumbledore say "Severus..."?) maybe he is actually pleading with Snape to finish it - to keep a promise not to let Draco be turned permanently to evil by killing Dumbledore (like Luke Skywalker having to resist the lure of the Dark Side). Hell, maybe Draco's the Chosen One!

Dumbledore had to die. All Harry's fathers/father figures have died - James, Sirius , Dumbledore. Fot the Buffy fans - it's like when Giles realises he has to leave Buffy: because by being there he's stopping her being as strong as she can be, he's (in the words of the song) "standing in her way."

Plus, don't know if JKR is at all influenced by the films but for me, Richard Harris was Dumbledore and it's not been the same with Michael Gambon!

I think if anyone is going to come back it will be Sirius - he doesn't 'feel' dead to me, more like trapped in another dimension.

I liked the tough new Harry emerging at the end - he really is coming of age for the last book. I found him a bit teenage and whiney in Book 5, he's grown up immensely in this one. Liked him and Ginny - it felt "right" whereas I always felt he and Cho Chan were a bit cringeworthy. Loved the striding across the common-room snog: very Willow and Tara, very..well practically any romantic film in living memory! Agree with the actress who plays Ginny in the films being a bit drippy and pasty: don't think the film-makers saw that romance coming or they would have had a more feisty and sexy red head instead.

Am hoping Hogwarts will feature in the last book - even though Harry has said he is not going back. I love Hogwarts - I love the whole idea of it.

One more thing. How on earth are they going to make this book into a film suitable for children? The scene where Dumbledore and Harry retrieve the horcrux - the description of the Inferi coming up out of the water? Sounds like 18 certificate territory to me (I thought the Dementors were scary!) Also so much snogging - and surely someone has to have sex in the last book ? In the Muggle World they would all have been at it like rabbits since the second year.

Gosh, that's a long post.

cazzybabs · 19/07/2005 23:28

GAP

What about Harry being the horcux and Nevile being the one that can survive when the Voldermort can't/ JKR keeps bringuip the fact the prophercy could have also been about Neville!

MrsDoolittle · 20/07/2005 09:20

&(&%$£%()&_(&)(&(%

I think you are all worrying all unecessarily about the 'new sexy' Ginny. I think it is perfectly plausible. We all know that children that are 'nothing particularly special' can suddenly blossom. I could definately say that of a few of my school friends. They grow up.
Infact I love this aspect of it all.

Besides, I was an overweight, chubby cheeked red head when I was at school. But now.... I'm a siren

alexsmum · 20/07/2005 11:40

i think the girl that played ginny was really pretty. there was an interview with her in junior magazine(her parents are well known jewellery designers-can't remember the name) and she looked lovely in the pictures. Add another few years on and she'll be stunning.
Anyway, i don't think daniel radcliffe is right as harry. He's too aled jones.Plus he's too well built. Harry in the books is more normal and scrawny. radcliffe is too posh for a start!
I also think emma watson is too pretty to be hermione. she's meant to have bushy hair and buck teeth! how they are they going to bring about the transformation for the ball in goblet of fire when she's so pretty anyway?
rupert whatsiname is great as ron though!

Aragon · 20/07/2005 11:46

Neville can't be the chosen one as the prophecy said about the Dark Lord "marking the chosen one as an equal" ie Harry's scar. I think there's more to Neville though and I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be much more dangerous than Voldamort anticipates.

Aragon · 20/07/2005 12:01

My theory

Albus "there are much more worse things than death" Dumbledore is immortal (much worse than death)hence the Phoenix as a pet which symbolises the re-birth from the ashes. It is important he appears dead for Harry to have the final battle with Voldy alone.

The Horcuxes are in some of the symbols of the founders, the Slytherin pendant, Godric Gryffindor's sword, etc they will be found in the school and at 12 Grimmauld place providing Mundungus Fletcher hasn't sold all the contents off (or been paid to deliver them to Bellatrix Lestrange etc)

Harry will win his battle against Voldy and will also have help from Ron, Hermione, Neville and Luna.

Ron will end up with Hermione
Harry with Ginny and Neville with Luna (possibly)
Draco will come good
Snape is serving his own agenda but will be more on the "good" side than evil. I like the theory that he couldn't allow Draco to become a killer and pre-arranged with Dumbledore that he would carry out the fatal curse.
Pompous Percy will finally realise the error of his ways but may die when he does.

Or don't I have enough to do with my time!

SoupDragon · 20/07/2005 12:16

.

I agree that Daniel Radcliffe isn't right. When reading the book, all the pther characters were in my head as the actors in the film but not Harry.

I don't think it will be difficult to transform Emma Watson from pretty to drop dead gorgeous for the ball. She appears pretty-but-plain in the films.

Like the immortal Dumbledore idea.

Dahlia · 20/07/2005 12:32

.
I can't really warm to Daniel Radcliffe, yet when you read the books the character is completely likeable.
I can't wait to see the triwizard tournament! Especially the dragons, and the blastended skrewts. Should be a fab film.
I like the immortal Dumbledore idea too, and the idea that he must be seen to be gone so that Harry can fight Voldy on his own. I so want Neville to be in on the action too, I want him to be a major factor in overpowering Voldy.

The phoenix wasn't blue Soupy it just flew off into the blue.

flamesparrow · 20/07/2005 16:24

You with your Buffy references!!!

Hermione being pretty... seen a clip of the next film - they do pull it off

None of the cast are how I pictured them in the books, with the exception of Snape who is perfect. Still bitter about Sirius - he was all wrong.

Dahlia - The best quote for me was when they were on the roof, and Dumbledore was welcoming the DeathEaters...

""Think your little jokes'll help you on your death bed, then?" she jeered.
"Jokes? No, no these are manners"

alexsmum · 20/07/2005 16:31

glad i'm not the only one who thought that sirius was wrong- gary oldman just didn't fit. for me christopher eccleston would have fitted my internal picture of sirius perfectly.

another thought on regulus black. in order of the phoenix when sirius is showing harry his family tree , it shows regulus as having a date of death some 15 years previously. harry is 15 at the time.it all fits in that regulus died at around the time of harrys birth don't you think?

assumedname · 20/07/2005 16:32

Regulus is undercover?

flamesparrow · 20/07/2005 16:33

Anyone else feeling like they needed to read all the books again with all this in mind????

Not too sure about Christopher Eccleston... For me it is a sort of british cross of Aragorn from LOTR (forgotten his name), and a slimmed down Wolverine from Xmen.

flamesparrow · 20/07/2005 16:34

Obviously I don't know anyone real who is that cross
