Need to lose 1 stone? Gather around....

froidIci · 17/01/2024 13:27

Not sure if this will get any clicks, but I wondered if there are folks who need to lose about a stone or a bit this way or that who might want some accountability?

BTW When I say "need to lose a stone" this means basically a stone to get to your own, individual target (which could be a random number, a random BMI point, just anything).

For me - 1 stone off takes me to weight before conceiving Baby 1, and 1.2 stone off takes me to my lightest adult weight and a very comfy size 10-12 as opposed to a size 12-14. I have added motivation that a 40th birthday tails off 2024 for me, so I've got a deadline.

My downfall? Carbs. Salty carbs. My body absolutely magically loses if I cut out rice, pasta and potatoes. And yet, alas - it specifically is those that I crave.

Anyone want a loose accountability thread?

I could do with this. I've cut out sugar, snacks and alcohol for January. 10st 5lbs on 1st Jan. Have lost 2lbs which is better than nothing, but not much of a reward for my sacrifices. Portions are smaller than normal, and avoiding UPF so a lot of salad and veg.

Next weigh in Friday, and I'd like to see at least 1lb gone - ideally more. Realistic goal weight is 9st 5lbs. My post children weight for years was under 9 stones, but I fear those days are gone. I've stayed around size 12 - but, like you, more 12/14 than my previous 10/12.

MikMak · 17/01/2024 18:46

Yep, I need to lose 9 lbs - 1 stone. I'm 5ft 3" tall and 9 stone 9 lbs. Feel much better around 9 stone and just under. Struggling to do my coat up and my fat leg broke my boot zip the other day, so I've drawn a line under my overeating. Logging calories and trying to walk/weights/pilates a few times a week. Chocolate, cream, biscuits and pasta are my downfall.

CalamityA · 17/01/2024 18:54

I'd like to lose a stone. I've lost once since last Xmas but it took me a year and I feel like I've plateaued.

I put over 2 stone on since having kids, then cancer and chemo. So I'd love to get down to under 11 stone.

I walk 5 miles several days a week and I've drastically cut down on alcohol. My weakness is carbs and biscuits and it doesn't seem to be coming off at the rate I'd like.

Could also be age related? I am mid 40's.

Today I weighed 11st 10.

Vulcanodon · 17/01/2024 19:02

Yes please. Could definitely do with losing a stone. Starting ADF today but it’s tough going to begin with

blueberrymojito · 17/01/2024 19:02

Similar here! I'm a large 12, 5ft 7 and could do with losing a stone, makes such a difference to the way clothes feel on me and my confidence too.

My downfall is chocolate, it's a real battle! I can luckily pass on alcohol, crisps and biscuits but chocolate is my thing and the reason why the weight creeps on. I've tried cutting it out but when I eventually cave I then binge so I'm trying to allow myself just a small amount each evening and that's my only "treat". No snacks and trying to limit UPFs as much as possible. Lots of home cooked food.

When is everyone hoping to lose their stone by?

Rainallnight · 17/01/2024 19:07

I’m tentatively in! 1 stone five pounds would be heaven but 1 stone would be very decent. I’m quite short and it’s so obvious I’m carrying extra weight.

My trouble is that I can’t stop putting delicious things in my mouth.

froidIci · 17/01/2024 19:14

Shall we each pick ONE thing to really really really change and stick to changing?

I’ve started this week with not doing the one golden trio of rice-potatoes-pasta. Not all carbs because I’ll fail if I start that now - just literally that trio.

It’s extra hard because I’m a really good cook and make awesome curries from my homeland ….. ah but they do Not taste the same with erm cauliflower “rice”, or with a “pile of veg”. That is my main downfall. I wish I was a shit cook and my curries tasted rubbish :/

One plods on. Keep it up everyone!

Does anyone else have a particular time of day they struggle? For me - I don’t even get hungry till say 1 pm.

its in the evenings, after work, and after kids bedtime - that unfortunately between 830-930 that a “need” to eat hits me :/

Can I join please? I posted last week as struggling to lose any weight despite sticking to 1200 calories a day and exercising 5 times a week. This week I have had 2 500 calorie days in the hope of losing some weight. I have about 1.5 stones to lose but currently a stone would be amazing. Def age playing a part (48) as I used to be able to drop weight easily by cutting down.

My other thing I am trying to do is drink more water which is not going as hoped!!

It's evening for me too! I can give or take during the day but associate sitting down in the evening with a (large) bar of chocolate!

froidIci · 17/01/2024 19:34

Welcome all!

it’s definitely an emotional thing. Work and life and admin end and then it’s the sense of “I deserve some comfort/peace/relax” and the sugar/fat/salt in whatever hits the spot is almost coded into brains as this = comfort/peace/relax.

In fact it’s 1940 DH putting kids to bed and I can feel the “need to eat” setting in. Am going to challenge myself this evening and make a cup of herbal tea instead and really try not to.

May post back before bed to see how it went this evening !

I could not agree more! I struggle so much to give up anything in January. It's too cold and my mind and body tell me I need to not worry about it just yet.

But I'm 5'7" and have crept up to 11st 9lbs which is approx 9-12lbs above where I feel and look my best. So I'm going to need to first of all stop putting weight on (2lb gained last week) before I can think about losing. And it might need to be a bit less cold, dark and still finishing the Xmas chocolate to succeed...

Salty carbs are also my thing, I usually give up chocolate/sweets etc for Lent and after a day or two the sweet tooth goes, but crisps and sandwiches and buttery toast and chips are all so tempting.

I might have to cut out bread first 😢

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/01/2024 19:54

@JuJuHeyHey snap, same height and weight here. I look really slim at 10.3/10.5 ish. I can’t get below 11 🤦‍♀️
I went back to slimming world before Christmas and got nicely in my groove, I averaged a pound a week and lost 12lbs. Then put 2 on before Christmas and 6.5 on over Christmas and NY. My starting weight was 11.9, then with those ups and downs and a little loss last week I’m now at 11.4. I’m finding it really hard to get back into it. I crave carbs at 3/4 pm and it’s nothing to do with hunger, it’s pure exhaustion/brain fog/frazzled head. I’m doing ok but a pound a week is miserably slow when I can gain 6.5lbs in a week….

so yes, to answer your question- I have a stone to lose and I’ll join your thread!

For me it is evenings and especially weekend evenings, I feel I deserve it for being good, going to the gym or working hard all week. Don't have a sweet touch but crisps are my down fall ( and cheese!)

fatisnotafeeling · 17/01/2024 20:40

I would love to join, I also have about a stone to lose.
5'7 and approx 11.10 - 12 stone. I look my best at around 10.10.

I have started working out with weights again after Xmas and loving it. However it is the evenings for me and I have such a sweet tooth. I really need to combat the evening if I could do that I know I would lose.

I did have a hysterectomy 2 yrs ago and I am now in menopause, I don't think that is helping my weight loss or sweet tooth.

I need to tape my mouth shut in the evenings, I have a fasting blood test in the morning which means I can't snack on chocolate this evening, it's killing me.

froidIci · 17/01/2024 20:51

It’s so interesting to see that so many of us recognise the evenings as a weak link. Must be something to do with mental load/life stage/hormones I don’t know what….

nearly 9 pm and I’ve stuck to herbal tea so far today. DH will come down soon and break open some chocolate and although I don’t have a sweet tooth I’ve got to stay strong! Posting here has helped not snack this evenjng so far …

Evenings used to be a weakness, but I gave up eating after dinner years ago. It was easy to recognise that I didn't need that bag of crisps or cheese and crackers. I do like a glass of wine or a gin and tonic in the evening if I don't have work in the morning. I only have one, so it's not because I get a hangover but just so that it's not every night.

I gave up crisps and chocolate years ago, so I 'm not looking to give up anything else. I just need to stop eating so much so often!

JuJuHeyHey · 17/01/2024 22:23

Oooooh yes, the wine/gin - snack cycle is strong within me. I had two large a Baileys this evening while watching The Traitors which at least stopped me eating chocolate. Is that progress??

I suppose that's our trouble - so much temptation. I have a bottle of Baileys in the cupboard - not something I drink often, but love it now and again. I used to always have chocolate in the house, but not now. I am quite fussy about chocolate now, and could happily eat a few squares of quality chocolate now. Or a Crunchie. I have eclectic chocolate tastes.

I have been on a really strict diet this month - only two small meals and no snacks. No sugar, no fruit, no snacks and no alcohol. After January, I will try the 5:2 diet - it worked for me before, but progress was slow.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/01/2024 22:56

I will join, need to lose a stone by May! I want to do the 16:8 fast, so I can only eat in an 8-hr window. Plus cutting down my sugar intake, and drinking more water. Aiming for 10k steps a day, and doing a couple of gym classes a week.

ohdearohdearohdearoh · 17/01/2024 23:03

@katedan try googling James smith TDEE and use the online calculator to work out exactly how many calories a day you should be having for weight loss.
I'm in too! A stone would be great, even 7/8lbs just to feel more comfortable in my clothes.
My weakness is crisps. Trying to fast between 6pm and 9am too, more water and more steps.

froidIci · 18/01/2024 06:43

Morning!
yesterday was the first evening in ever that I did NOT snack!
strangely starting this thread and posting on it last evening and taking it one step at a time really did the trick. So I’m going to try it again.

today’s goals are

  • Don’t eat rice/pasta/potatoes/sweets
  • Make Herbal tea just when sitting down in the evening

Good luck all!

I broke my toe and couldn't go to the gym (latest in a series of ridiculous reasons why I can't wake up early and go before the kids wake up). That plus feeling sad and letting go over Christmas has left me 2 stone over my goal weight, 1.5 over what I was last spring.

I think if I pause on the alcohol that will help kick start me.

RoseLarkin · 18/01/2024 07:00

I'd love to join too! I need to lose 1.5 stone to get to the weight I was before having kids (but I've not been that weight for 6 years 😂) so 1 stone would be amazing, and I'd like to do it before the Easter holidays.

I've started walking in my lunch break, and planning healthy meals but haven't been calorie counting, I do think the no pasta/potatoes/rice might be a good one for me to try too as carbs are my weakness!
