Need to lose 1 stone? Gather around....

froidIci · 17/01/2024 13:27

Not sure if this will get any clicks, but I wondered if there are folks who need to lose about a stone or a bit this way or that who might want some accountability?

BTW When I say "need to lose a stone" this means basically a stone to get to your own, individual target (which could be a random number, a random BMI point, just anything).

For me - 1 stone off takes me to weight before conceiving Baby 1, and 1.2 stone off takes me to my lightest adult weight and a very comfy size 10-12 as opposed to a size 12-14. I have added motivation that a 40th birthday tails off 2024 for me, so I've got a deadline.

My downfall? Carbs. Salty carbs. My body absolutely magically loses if I cut out rice, pasta and potatoes. And yet, alas - it specifically is those that I crave.

Anyone want a loose accountability thread?

I mean I need to get rid of two stone but here for accountability and one at a time! Had a rude shock at Christmas when it turned out I was 13stone - thought I was 12 ish which should have been bad enough. Anyway I am now 12.8 and aiming for 10.8. I am 5.7 and looking to do this by positive lifestyle changes so more exercise (halfway through couch to 5k) and more healthy choices. I love crisps and carbs so going easy on both of those for starters. Plan to add in weight training when I can face it… 2lbs a week target and a Sunday weigh in. I am trying to concentrate on health as I feel fine in day to day life but the running does make me feel my weight in the way a day’s hill climb doesn’t. Menopause is a bugger for gain - that has been my only change really but maybe it’s good because it will
make me healthier if I make these changes stick.

JustFrustrated · 21/01/2024 11:40

How has everyone's weekend gone?

I 100% fell off the wagon yesterday. Took DDs to London to spend their Christmas money and basically ate 2500 calories, so even with all the walking I was way way over what I can have.

Telling myself I'm on my period and one day doesn't undo everything. So today I'm fasting until my evening meal (slow cooked beef), cleaning and taking the kids for an unnecessary walk whilst I charge my car 😂

froidIci · 21/01/2024 11:52

Periods are game changers. I’m also like a woman possessed at ovulation. Which is basically great opportunities to feel chips are calling me by my name every two weeks FFS 🤷‍♀️

Getting back into intermittent fasting, but not being too militant about it: only food between 12:00 and 18:00, but I've been having a cup of tea in the morning.
Also very low carbs.
I love this, it puts the preoccupation with food to sleep in my body. It's like 'out of sight, out of mind'; if my body doesn't get carbs, it soon forgets about wanting them. It's restful.
My trickiest 'small change' is trying to fit in a 30 minute brisk constitutional walk after the DC have gone to bed. That's normally when I do my planning and marking, so a walk means I have to work later, which is another problem in terms of weightloss: I already work well past midnight on weeknights, so it looks like my new bedtime is going to be around 1am 😭

Hello fellow teacher (I presume) can I suggest that you look to push back in the work. It’s a job that is never done but less sleep never equals better health and more weight loss. As part of this I have just stepped down from management and feel liberated. Currently doing a bit of marking but nothing whole school for Monday morning. Hurrah! I have done this so there is more for me and us (I mean not money and we have only one income so that is a consideration) rather than school taking and taking. Am marking for two hours then what is not done can wait. Look after yourself because it’s the only way you can thrive.

TheMotherSide · 21/01/2024 14:01

Hey PassthePickle: definitely fellow teacher.
You're right, of course. I think your stepping down from leadership is the way for me to go too. In my small primary school we've no choice but to all have various middle leader roles, but I think I'm going to need to ask to drop a day as like you I'm finding my job definitely is not affording me any kind of work-life harmony (as my local authority now calls it).

froidIci · 21/01/2024 16:07

Hmm. Fessing up to an unplanned thing.

I’ve had birthday cake today as well. 28 spare slices of a huge COSTCO cake which survived the party is in the house and I ate a generous slice today. (Other meals all fine).

So I think I’ll keep the kids’ share of their specific named slices and take the rest to work tomorrow for the kitchen for my lovely colleagues to have some and to make good use of the cake (hate food waste) instead of 28 slices languishing in our fridge and offering temptation.

Wont be doing a weigh in till Wednesday anyway so I don’t get demoralised by yesterday and today’s cake eating in case it’s had an effect (it has had an effect as gluten makes me awfully bloated/constipated and yet I’ve clear had a whole load of gluten!)

Bookmarked. I want to lose a stone. I did it a couple of years ago but it crept back. I have a lowish BMR though at 1300 calories had it checked. V hard to stay under daily and hungry if I do. I am currently 10 stone 8

Passthepickle · 21/01/2024 16:27

TheMotherSide - work life harmony huh? If only a rebrand made all the difference. Hope you find your way to make it work.

HappyLittleTreeFriend · 21/01/2024 17:47

Don’t beat yourself up about it! And a sensible plan to take the rest to work - I find it a lot easier when there’s no temptation in the cupboards, so I was so happy when my DP said sorry he’d finished off the rest of the Mini Eggs last night 😂 I was under my calorie count yesterday and I think I will be today - I had a BLT sandwich for lunch so not the healthiest and eating bread, and I had a single Oreo for a snack earlier! Also pasta planned for dinner 🙈🙈 but will try to have a small portion. Dry Jan is definitely my calorie saviour at the moment!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/01/2024 20:39

my weekend has been good, except I have had too many syns. I’ll have to cut right back now before weigh in on Thursday. I have counted everything though, and written it all down, which is a good step for me, rather than mindlessly eating and pretending I’m on track. It’s week three of dry January and I’m finding it pretty easy, I really wanted a break from drinking to be honest. I wish I felt a bit less tired but I know it’s doing me good.

I’m all planned for the week, my meals can be 100% on plan and pretty much syn free, it’s just the ‘extras’ that I need to watch. I’m a persistent work from home snacker. This week I really need to eat more veg with every meal, and drink more water. I’d like to run but I’m not going out in the driving rain and fake force winds.

froidIci · 21/01/2024 21:32

Great to hear that you’re set for the week with the plans. The mental work is most of it isn’t it, because without a plan we are just going for whatever is comforting/easy.

Weekend has been great and the only food related slip up has been the birthday cakes. Hoping to get rid of the leftovers tomorrow!

Can I join in?
No alcohol, no lunch and no treats since Jan 3rd and I've lost 1lb!! I feel totally demotivated

Similar. Nothing lost first week, then a couple of pounds, then nothing.

I do want to lose the weight, but stopping snacking is also an important target for me, and I've made progress with that even if I've not been rewarded. Once I get down to 10 stones (5lb lost), I shall ease up, but I am determined to keep going until I get that far.

pandapanda67 · 22/01/2024 00:57

I'd like to join please!

froidIci · 22/01/2024 07:31

Morning ! January can be really tough to lose weight in. Especially with the cold snap we’ve had till Saturday. More important is to set in place the good habits.

for me for example - it really is important to nor evening snack. For all sorts of reasons but mainly because 1) it regularly takes me over my required intake of food and 2) the food I snack on is largely unhealthy I tend to find. So kicking that habit out of the way - really and truly is a WIN even if the scales don’t cooperate at the start.

hence I think for me 2024 needs to be slightly less about specific scale numbers and more about some good habits…

Can I join please, I could do with losing 1.5stone but 1 would be great! In time for my next IVF transfer mid Feb would be even better 🤣 I'm a huge emotional eater and miscarriages plus going on antidepressants make me the heaviest I've ever been at over 13st at 5ft2 🫠

HappyLittleTreeFriend · 22/01/2024 07:56

Checking in! I went a bit over my calorie goal yesterday and also didn’t manage to stay away from bread 😂 AND ate an Oreo which I’m counting as chocolate! But today is a new day and I’m determined. Got to pop out to Tesco at some point today so will make sure I get some more grapes (the kids love them so we always have some but I find them and cherry tomatoes to be a good snack to grab instead of chocolate/a biscuit or if I feel peckish in between meals so we need extra grapes 😂) and need to buy a battery for our bathroom scales so I can actually track my weight and (eventual) weight-loss 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I do the same with grapes!😂every time I start a new weight loss effort I buy extra grapes to keep me off the chocolate.

Weighed in this morning, still no change on the scales. Tried to get back to intermittent fasting yesterday- attempted OMAD but the hunger was so intense I started to feel unwell- think it's probably a bad idea with breastfeeding and sleep deprivation. Managed 16: 8 in the end but went a bit over my calorie limit in the eating window. Hoping if I can stay consistent with weighing and tracking calories the weight will start to drop again without drastic efforts. Good luck to you all today.

blueberrymojito · 22/01/2024 12:48

Checking in here - weekend wasn't great...meals were healthy and no snacks throughout the day, but had a whole bag of mini eggs on both Friday and Sat eve Blush

I need to tackle my evening chocolate habit, that's going to be the key to my weight loss and feeling healthier in myself! Going to aim for nothing else after tea this week, might even brush my teeth after tea!!

froidIci · 22/01/2024 13:48

Its tough today too - as there's a dinner out at a venue that is erm a pizza restaurant. It involves my kids centrally so I cannot stay away!Howver there are ways to eat that dont involve an actual pizza.

The mini eggs/cakes/temptations I so hear you. This is why birthdays/january/xmas particulalry tough.

I think the evening snacking is so important to kill off as a habit even if the scales dont show it - becuase it rarely actually serves an actual nutritional deficit does it?! Its only function is largely comfort (and later guilt) and weight gain.

Or half a pizza with a big Mumsnet salad?

froidIci · 22/01/2024 13:50

oooooh thats a good middle ground. the menu actually has a half pizza/nder 500 cal pizza option., you are so right - it doesnt have to be a humungous pizza or nothing does it?!

Absolutely not. In fact, I’m far more likely to come home and binge eat, feeling sorry for myself after depriving myself by having just a salad - and on such a bloody freezing day! Definitely get a nice warm pizza half too. When we buy pizzas at the supermarket, if I’m cutting down I will often just cook half annd have it with a nice dressed leafy salad and put the other in the freezer if my husband doesn’t fancy any. Tbh, this should prob be a new habit of mine even when at my ideal weight to get the extra five a day in.

froidIci · 22/01/2024 14:57

I have had a eureka moment with this pizza half pizza business! Actually yes, when I have gone all or nothing and had NOTHING at a major event/outing - I have then stopped at the chippys to buy chips - because starving - when it actually would have been far better to have had a smaller portion of the yummies on offer in the first place.

Hello, can I join? I haven't read the full thread yet, but I will before I post again. I'm mainly getting in while im reading so I can't wander off...😳

I want/need to lose 10kg (well, 10.5) to get to 70kg. This morning I was 80.5. I walk the dog for 45 minutes each morning and I exercise (gym or swim) at least 5 times a week. I'm also trying to restart the couch to 5k. But no matter what I do, I cannot keep up with calories in, so they need to drop significantly. I'm back to 8/16 intermittent fasting at 1200-1400 calories on at least 5 days of the week. My weakness is all the food groups, so I have asked dh to not share his lunchtime crisps or other treats. I had to call to the shop on my way home from my lunchtime swim and managed to not buy myself anything which was a challenge!

wheresmyshoe · 22/01/2024 16:13

Checked into hotel, ate the complimentary biscuits.... I need to take myself in hand this week or it will all go sideways!
