Need to lose 1 stone? Gather around....

froidIci · 17/01/2024 13:27

Not sure if this will get any clicks, but I wondered if there are folks who need to lose about a stone or a bit this way or that who might want some accountability?

BTW When I say "need to lose a stone" this means basically a stone to get to your own, individual target (which could be a random number, a random BMI point, just anything).

For me - 1 stone off takes me to weight before conceiving Baby 1, and 1.2 stone off takes me to my lightest adult weight and a very comfy size 10-12 as opposed to a size 12-14. I have added motivation that a 40th birthday tails off 2024 for me, so I've got a deadline.

My downfall? Carbs. Salty carbs. My body absolutely magically loses if I cut out rice, pasta and potatoes. And yet, alas - it specifically is those that I crave.

Anyone want a loose accountability thread?

I have had a eureka moment with this pizza half pizza business! Actually yes, when I have gone all or nothing and had NOTHING at a major event/outing - I have then stopped at the chippys to buy chips - because starving - when it actually would have been far better to have had a smaller portion of the yummies on offer in the first place.

By a weird coincidence this is what I did this lunchtime - half a pizza. Warm, feels a treat, in fact back when I used to be successful at dieting, that was my lunch everyday, works much better for me than adding up unsatisfying low-fat options, for the same number of calories.
So far this thread is working great at holding me accountable, no evening snacking since I've joined it, I'm happy to report!

FiveShelties · 23/01/2024 07:47

Weigh in day for me today and I have lost 1.6 pounds this week, so have lost 5.2 pounds now. I am trying to drastically cut down my wine consumption and stop stupid snacking which usually occurs after wine! We are away this week-end so not the best for dieting but will try to be more aware of what I am eating and drinking.

It is really hot here at the moment so lots of BBQs and invites so trying not to lapse back into Christmas mode again. It is so good to see so many people on this thread, especially to realise that you are not the only one struggling.

Woohoo! Well done! And if progress is not solely the scale figures but actual real lived habits then double woohoo to any of us creating new practises :)

Weighed myself today and have lost 1 lb or so. Which - given that the week has had more birthday cake than the original one slice (!) and pizza and what not - is great. Also great is that it’s a week nearly of no Snack in the evenings so a mini habit forming there.

This week’s habits -

  1. continuing from last week: No rice potatoes pasta
  2. Continuing from last week: No snack in the evening
  3. NEW for this week - conscious water. Making extra efforts to hydrate even if the super cold tap water feels unappealing in January temperatures.

onwards everyone! Little steps !

Well done@froidIci real life definitely gets in the way. I always start each week with the best of intentions!

HappyLittleTreeFriend · 23/01/2024 11:53

Well done @FiveShelties! And I like the new hydrate habit @froidIci! I had a mini cupcake this morning and an extra coffee but back on the herbal tea now, and going to have a leftover fishcake and salad for lunch, so not the worst! Going to have working bathroom scales this evening, DP has got a battery for them from work, so I’ll have some actual numbers again to track any progress, which is good motivation 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 going to do a weekly weight check I think 😊🙌🏻

froidIci · 23/01/2024 11:59

I love fish cakes and try to make them myself with less carbs but always fail!

Yes weekly weigh in possibly gives more long term perspective than demoralising and inaccurate misleading daily fluctuations !

Really like the idea of gradually introducing new habits instead of trying to do a massive overhaul overnight.

I've been to the gym today and pushed myself quite hard (leg day). I'm really enjoying it at the moment and love when I'm the only person there like today!

Keeping up with drinking more water and currently keeping calories under 1400. It's hard but I'm really short so needs must unfortunately.

I've read a bit about weighing daily and tracking the weekly average to allow for normal fluctuations in e.g. water retention around the menstrual cycle, rather than weighing once a week like I had done previously. Going to give it a go and see how it pans out.

User1775 · 23/01/2024 15:49

My weight yo-yos up to 6lb every day. I am so confused. On Friday5/1 I was 10stone 3, Monday8/1 10 stone, Friday12/1 9stone12, Monday15/1 10 stone2, Monday 22/1 9 stone13. God knows what I actually weigh but I am significantly fatter than I was this time last year. I am on fruit and yog for breakfast, homemade soup (no bread) for lunch and a normal dinner now. Fingers crossed.

froidIci · 23/01/2024 15:52

Is there a nice high protein yoghurt anyone recommends? I really like Mango, as a fruit and as a flavour, and really dislike berry type tastes. Any ideas?

Hi all. Struggling today as I want to have an evening of treats on this freezing, wet, windy day. I just considered why I shouldn’t fall off the wagon though and thought it’d help writing the reasons for losing weight down, if anyone is interested/want to share their reasons.

To stop always being on a diet before DC understand. I want us all to sit down as a family and eat exactly the same thing - not mummy begrudgingly saying no to the baguette and butter.

To stop yo yo dieting once and for all! I’ve been on a diet intermittently since I was 16 FFS!

Health. I may not be obese but I want to eat much better.

To fit in my lovely clothes and feel confident in them - and buy more instead of saying “when I lose weight and reach size X…”

To feel my best on my holiday and not be afraid of photos of me playing in the pool or sea with my DC. (I’ve hardly any photos of my mum as she always hid behind the camera as she hated how she looked.)

This is actually a big one: I want to be able to go out for a meal without checking the menu, choosing a dish with Cals in mind, or even seeing the meal as an inconvenience as it won’t help my weight loss. I want to be like my friend was ordering a massive croissant with her coffee on Sunday without saying “Ooh I shouldn’t really.” I want to be able to do this then just eat healthy meals for the rest of the day - no making up for eating ‘bad’ food through restriction or conscious exercise to put right the ‘wrong’. So this last reason is all about balance I guess. And taking guilt away from eating.

Finally, I am not doing another winter eating frigging salad unless I really fancy one! I love them, don’t get me wrong, but preferably not when it’s freezing.

I’d love to be inspired by some of your reasons if you’re happy to share of course.

Philippa7 · 23/01/2024 16:01

Oh it’ll also be great to exercise for the sake of it and the joy/release or whatever - not as a means to an end of losing weight or burning calories.

froidIci · 23/01/2024 16:04

I’ll share. I can’t handle gluten so yesterday at Dd’s birthday dinner as she turned 4 I said no to the garlic bread.

DS who’s only 8 immediately siad “mumma why are you so strict with your diet? Is it just gluten that makes you poorly?”

I was shell shocked that my little 8 year old had picked it and whilst putting the gluten excuse out for all carbs is okay for now he and DD will soon learn about restrictions so my reason is that I want to be done with this now and then maintain.

Can you prolong the eating of the treat by 1 hour?

OP posts:
Philippa7 · 23/01/2024 16:17

Ooh good tip! I’ll do that.

Thanks for sharing. Definitely food for thought (no pun intended) as kids are so impressionable and this is my biggest fear with always being on a diet, losing a few pounds, gaining them, and repeating these steps over and over again.

Arla do the protein pots in mango flavour which are quite high in protein. I like these personally. I tend to stick to Greek yog though and add the actual fruit for extra fruit and in an attempt to avoid overly processed stuff and additives.

redavocado · 23/01/2024 16:25

Can I join you guys? DD2 is now 3 months and despite eating rubbish, I have been losing the pregnancy weight. It's slowing now and I have another stone to lose to reach my pre pregnancy weight - and another stone after that to reach my ideal weight but baby steps for now...

This week I'm trying to focus on drinking enough water and improving my snacks. I'm going to make some energy balls and chickpea blondies when DH finishes work and can take the kids off me.

BranchGold · 23/01/2024 18:38

I’d like to join too! I’ve spent the last hour or so reading this thread to motivate me away from snacking, so thank you everyone who’s contributed so far.

I’ve started properly this week, I want to lose a stone and a half to get back to my lowest adult weight (when I was desperate to be a stone lighter at the time!) and I do feel like I’m in the right headspace to tackle this, which has been my biggest hurdle.

I’m doing a combination of IF and lower carb, so very similar to you op in removing the bread, pasta, potatoes out of my daily eating habits. I find the rigidity of IF useful, once you break the first couple of days where your body is screaming for its usual calorie dumps, the low carb is also helping the blood sugar spikes.

Im not intending to be as regimental on the weekends (wine!) but hoping to stick to it Monday/Thursday.

froidIci · 23/01/2024 18:43

Ooh what are chickpea blondies and energy bar recipes please?!

Ooh what are chickpea blondies and energy bar recipes please?!

Here are the energy balls: www.gimmesomeoven.com/no-bake-energy-bites/

I made these while I was waiting for dinner to cook. Not convinced they're actually healthy but hopefully they're a step up from inhaling chocolate!

I haven't got to the blondies yet but I saw a Joe Wicks recipe for them on his instagram.

froidIci · 23/01/2024 20:53

Thanks for the link!

another successful evening of no snacking. Had a giant mug of fresh mint tea which was lovely.

hope you all have had ok days even if numbers of scales or measures haven’t goNe your way. Healthier habits are still vastly better for us than unhealthier habits.

Weigh in day today (well I weigh more often but in my friends group haha) and I'm now back at pre period weight, but annoyed because I feel like I should have lost. But judging by everyone else's weigh in results....we've all stalled

I want to start the gym this Sunday, but I'm living in a permanent cycle of being ill, and I'm not sure my lungs can take it.

I'm still having an evening snack, but I'm being either precise with the amount, or it's a protein mousse from Aldi. I have learned my sweet spot for protein is about 88g a day minimum to stop being hungry.

SW: 68.8KG
CW: 66KG
GOAL: 60KG

shearwater2 · 23/01/2024 21:39

I like the Skyr mango @froidIci. Very good for protein.

GreenMarigold · 23/01/2024 21:43

Late to the party but I’d like to join! I’ve upped my steps by 30% this month but that’s doing nothing to help me lose weight.

My problem times are afternoons when I work from home and evenings. My weaknesses are bread, potatoes and chocolate and ice cream.

My first thing to stop is eating rubbish after dinner! I’m going to focus on that this week.

Starting weight 9st 12, target weight 9st.

shearwater2 · 23/01/2024 21:46

I've had a low calorie day today, but still managed 98g protein and went to the gym. Don't normally do that on lower days but actually feel ok and will be having more calories tomorrow. No breakfast, just tea & black coffee, had a Subway chicken & bacon salad for lunch with a cup a soup (just to have something warm & comforting really) and dinner was puy lentils with chilli hot smoked salmon and prawns, celery & cherry tomatoes. Then had one piece of toast with cheese spread after the gym. 1,100 calories, only 67g carbs too.

shearwater2 · 23/01/2024 21:53

I would like to join, sorry, I hadn't said that and just waded in.

I've lost 1st 3lbs and have 1st 3lbs to go to get to 11 stone and BMI 24. And likely a size 10 comfortably.

I eat an average of just under 1600 daily calories, just over 11000 a week, but try to vary them. So Saturday and Sunday - 2000 calories a day. Monday, Weds, Friday, - 1700 a day. Tuesday & Thursday - 1000 a day.
