Anyone up for loosing a stone - keeping each other company?

I really need to loose a stone. I’m 45, confirmed menopausal and at my heaviest at 11st 12lbs.

This has been gradual weight gain over the last 3 years.

I need to loose it, I feel sluggish and I’m only 5’4 so I’m starting to look like a barrel.

I have a few factors that mean I give up easy, 2 hour daily commute, stressful role in the NHS and the other stuff of juggling 2 kids etc.

So doing this with others, having some accountability would be helpful for me.

I'll join you OP. I started [yet again] on Monday. For context, I'm older than you and have an underactive thyroid and a sedentary job. I'm doing low carb and 1000 calories along with a short Joe Wicks workout daily. In the past I was very successful with Keto but I've gained it all back in the last 2 years. I've tried several times since New Year to get back on it and have failed. I'm trying the low carb/ calorie approach in the hope that it will work but be less restrictive. I'm actually aiming for 2 stone by 18th June when I'm due to go on holiday, so that's my goal.
Start weight a shameful 14st 2.5llbs at 5 foot 7.

checkedcloth · 16/02/2022 08:51

Hello @recklessgran good to have a partner in crime.

I know that low carb works for me too. My intention is to minimise carbs, reduce sugar and wine and do a 20 min workout daily. I know that’s a small amount but I can’t face getting up any earlier that 5.45!

@checkedcloth I'm bone lazy [physically] so for now I consider my Joe Wicks 10 minutes for seniors a result! Well, it's a start isn't it? I think even a tiny extra thing is a step in the right direction. Baby steps and all that. I'm doing it the old fashioned way and am noting everything in a food journal in the hope that writing everything down will make me feel more accountable but actually I'd love to post here too so that we can give each other support. Hopefully others will join us so that we can party!!

checkedcloth · 16/02/2022 13:48

I really like the idea of a food journal, like you I need the accountability!

Hi, I'd love to join in if I may? I'm almost the same as you recklessgran. I'm 5ft 6.5" and was 14st 2.4lbs. I started the Monday before last and have dropped 6lbs so far so am now 13st 10.4lbs.
Last year I lost almost 4st, and put back on 3!!! I have type 2 diabetes so I really need to stop all the junk. I miss potatoes. Sad lol
I 'exercise' for 20 mins a day. A gentle YouTube 10 minute stretching video in the morning, and a 10 minute yoga for bedtime in the evening.

How are you both planning on losing the weight? I'm roughly calorie counting.
I weigh on a Monday, and will do my measurements once a month (Bust, waist, hips.) so hopefully I see a good change.
Nice to meet you both, and I look forward to losing with you! Smile

Cally62 · 16/02/2022 19:27

I'd love to lose a stone. Seriously haven't been any kind of active for the last 2 years. Have spent the whole 2 years basically cooking and eating. Have been sharing my home baked goods with the neighbours so I'm not the only one around hear that's eaten more of their fair share of cakes and gained more than a little weight. I'm 60 later this year, 5ft5 and 70 kilos. I avoid any over excertion....my family just laugh at me when I suggest any activity that means leaving the house. I need help.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 16/02/2022 19:43

A stone is about 6 kg - that's what I need to lose to. I want to be back at least to 68 kg when I turn 60 this summer.
I will count calories with an app, relegate festive / luxury food back to the weekends and (if the weather improves slightly) will walk halfways to work in the mornings.
The app suggests (for a woman my age, weight, hight and activity levels) 1300 cal per day.

73kittycat73 · 16/02/2022 19:48

If it helps anyone, to ease you into exercising, I do in the morning, and in the evening. I've been doing it for over a week now and it's quite manageable. I am so unfit and used to sat scrunched up at my desk that my shoulders actually ached from doing the first video for a few days. My butt hurts now if I sit on it too long! lol Grin

Sweetbabyrays · 16/02/2022 19:57

Me mr me! Also in a stressful NHS job that I’m hating, so comfort eating the biscuits to make me feel better. I had a word with myself this morning as I feel gross and know the holiday season is round the corner! I’m to scared to get on the scales but know I need to lose a stone to fit in my favourite clothes this summer and feel good! I will get on next week and face the music!
I jog 5K x 3 a week if I can but need to stretch and tone a bit too! Plan to cut down on carbs and sugar. The evenings are my main downfall. I know eating better helps my mood too so accountability will be good :)

SpamIAm · 16/02/2022 20:16

I'll join! I'm in a very similar situation to you OP, just without menopause to also contend with. It was a bit of a shock when I weighed myself a few weeks ago and I weigh as much as I did after having my son. That'll be why all my clothes feel a bit snug then!

I intended to just stop the evening snacking (eating chocolate with our evening cup of tea has become a bit of a habit) and do some more exercise. Neither has happened yet! Going to book myself in to swimming lessons again and need to order a usb dvd drive so I can do my exercise DVD's (Jillian will sort me right out, I'm sure). Also need to start making lunch so I don't end up having curry half and half from the staff canteen, but baby steps...

recklessgran · 16/02/2022 20:28

Evening all. Ooooh how lovely we've got lots of joiners. Welcome everybody! I 've had a reasonable day and have stuck to my 1000 calories and under 50gms of carbs. I'm also doing intermittent fasting so only eating between 12 and 8. I know my method is quite extreme but I'm an all or nothing type and this works for me at least in the short term to kick things off. I am currently sporting a huge bread baby which simply has to go. Unfortunately bread is the equivalent of carb crack to me. I ADORE it, but, no more I want to look good in my holiday wardrobe half of which currently doesn't fit me.
I've just reviewed my food journal and need to up my veg and add in a little fruit - low carb berries I think. I also need to drink more water so those are the tweeks I need to make over the next couple of days.
@73kittycat73 that's an impressive loss to start you off - really well done. I weigh daily although I know you're not meant to but I find it helps me keep on track. I also took my measurements on Monday and noted them in my journal. Just like you I will repeat them in a month. I'm very ashamed of my 38inch waist. Appalled in truth.

Bideyinn · 16/02/2022 21:02

I’m in. Getting married on the 18th of June and need to lose a stone minimum.

checkedcloth · 17/02/2022 07:40

Welcome everyone! So good to have a group of us all to look out for each other here.

@Sweetbabyrays yes, comfort eating is the norm for me too. I justify eating rubbish it drinking by the fact I’ve had terrible day at work. Problem is, most days are terrible!

@Cally62 similarly my family don’t seem to understand that I need to eat differently to loose the weight, I’m not sure how I am going to overcome this bit.

@SpamIAm a curry half and half sounds incredible and exactly the worst of thing I find myself eating.

I’m off for HT so limited as to what I will do this week but weighted in at 11.13 1/2 this am

scooterbear · 17/02/2022 07:54

Me. I'm in the same boat as you op. Plus I broke my arm badly at Christmas and I've only just really been able to start walking the dogs again now (which is my only form of exercise really). I've been eating and drinking like Henry the 8th at a feast since my arm break and it needs to stop. I'm about 11 stone and everything is too tight. Not happy at this size at all.
I've had success with intermittent fasting before and been really good at sticking to it but my will power has gone astray it seems this time.

Sweetbabyrays · 17/02/2022 08:14

Think I might start the fast thing, it really helped last time. Eating between 11&7, it helps with the snacking at night. It’s so hard to come off since in started the menopause despite HRT! So depressing! Just off for a jog after a pint of water… let’s see how today pans out! Good luck all :)

scooterbear · 17/02/2022 08:23

I've got a blood test this morning with a view to starting low dose HRT. I'm very sure I'm peri. Obvs I'm hoping the HRT will also act as some sort of magical weight loss pill as well...possibly a bit optimistic

badkitty · 17/02/2022 08:34

Ooh this is the thread for me! Also 45, also menopausal (need to get round to actually going to the doctors but can't actually remember last time I had a period and they have been intermittent for several years). Put on over a stone in the last couple of years. Also got divorced last year, generally has been quite a stressful period (on top of general covid stress!) so definitely ready to feel myself again. The weight has gone on differently this time as well, I have a massive belly which I have never had before and I hate. Losing a stone would be amazing. Have been trying but seems so difficult now, also with WFH I just want to snakc literally all the time. Too scared to stand on scales at moment but was 10 stone last time. I hope joining this thread can help keep me accountable!

73kittycat73 · 17/02/2022 11:49

Thank you recklessgran. Smile
I feel off the wagon last night. I went to bed but got up as I was having a blood sugar crash (I'm diabetic.) . I had three Original Oat So Simples. Hopefully I haven't done too much damage. I forgot, the diabetic nurse came out last week and gave me a magazine that suggested having full sugar coke in for hypos (Blood sugar crashes.) but I forgot I had it in.
How's everyone else doing today?

clpsmum · 17/02/2022 11:59

I'm in I have lost 1 1/2 Aton since Christmas but amazingly have six more stone to go so I am well up for some motivation!!

Ps I got a Fitbit for Xmas but have no Fitbit friends! If anyone would like to add me I am up for that!!

MintyGreenDream · 17/02/2022 12:00

Yes please! I need to lose a stone in 7 weeks for a wedding

cheeseybeans19 · 17/02/2022 12:57

I’ll join, have booked a holiday abroad for July, first one in years☀️ Could do with losing 2 stone but would be happy with 1. I did well on slimming world but put a fair bit back on during the lockdowns, so will probably follow that again more or less

recklessgran · 17/02/2022 13:03

Afternoon everyone. I'm on the naughty step because I ate 2 slices of toast and marmite this morning and that used up my entire 50gms daily carbs allowance. I'm blaming DH who has been a the last couple of days. Definitely an emotional eater over here. I'm eyeing up the patio at the moment..... Don't know what's got into him - he's usually lovely!
Anyway it's great to meet you all and hopefully together we can do this. KOKO. [Keep on keeping on.] I now need to make sure of a vitually no carb dinner. Looks like chicken and egg salad I think. Filling but should be able to do it on 10gms carbs so hopefully haven't blown the whole day out.

scooterbear · 17/02/2022 13:46

Well I didn't start eating until 13.15 which is good. However I ate some mini eggs and a ham sandwich which is not so good. Off for an hours dog walk now.

badkitty · 17/02/2022 17:32

Can't beat toast and marmite @recklessgran! I find it hard to stop at 2 slices... Definitely carbs are my problem but I feel terrible if I try to cut down too much.
